CCLS + New York State Standards

CCSS.ELA.-LITERACY. R.H. 9-10.2 Determine the central ideas or information of a primary
or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of how key events or ideas develop over the
course of the text.
Indicator: This will be accomplished when the students make their infographics with the
six+ facts about the specific battle that their group chose.
CCSS.ELA.LITERACY.R.H. 9-10.9 Compare and contrast treatments of the same topic in
several primary and secondary sources.
Indicator: This will be accomplished when the students compare and contrast North and
South Korea by conducting a Google Images search of each country.

New York State Next Generation Standards

9-10SL1b: Work with peers to set norms for collegial discussions and decision-making,
establish clear goals, deadlines, and individual roles as needed. 9-10SL1c
Indicator: This will be evident when the students work together in a group format to
create their infographic.
Instructional Resources
- Internet Access
- Smartboard or screen for videos/ppt.
- P.C., or tablets (at least one for each group)
- Poster Board
- Crayons/markers

Motivation
The class will begin by having a turn and talk discussion with their peers. Does anyone know
anything the Korean War? Does anyone know anything about South Korea? Does anyone know
anything about North Korea? Does anyone know anything about the current political
developments on the Korean Peninsula? The teacher will then talk about his experience living in
South Korea near the DMZ.

DEVELOPMENTAL PROCEDURES
1. The students will see a ppt. presentation explaining the two main battles of the Korean
War, MacArthur’s Landing at Incheon and the Battle of Chosin Reservoir.

2. Students will watch the trailer for “Operation Chromite”.

3. The students will watch a brief YouTube video commemorating the Battle of Chosin
Reservoir.

4. The students will view a slide show displaying photographs conveying the significance of
each battle.

5. The students will make an Infographic/poster explaining the key facts about the Battle of
Chosin Reservoir. Each group’s infographic/poster is supposed to convey the emotions
felt from learning about Chosin Reservoir or the Landing at Incheon.

6. At the end of class each group will present their infographic/poster. Each group will
explain their six key points of that battle as well as their reasoning behind how they made
their infographic.
Instructional Strategies
Discussion
Indicator: This will be evident when the teacher gives his firsthand experience of living
in South Korea near the DMZ.

Scaffolding
Indicator: This will be evident when the students independently make their own
infographics depicting how they viewed the battle.

Adaptations
- The student that struggles to understand the directions will have them read to him/her
multiple times at a slower pace.
- The student which prefers to work alone will be allowed to complete the infographic
portion of the lesson independently rather than in a group.
- The student that is an English Language Learner will view the YouTube videos with their
native language subtitles (if available).

Differentiation of Instruction
Struggling Students
Struggling students will be given extra time to complete their posters and infographics. The
teacher will walk around the classroom and offer guidance to any students that are struggling.
Average Students
Average students will be expected to finish their infographics during the class period but will be
allowed finish them at home. Average students will be encouraged to work without teacher’s
help on their infographics but teacher will offer guidance in absolutely needed.
Advanced Students
Advanced students will complete the infographic independently by the end of the class period
with little to no input from the teacher.
Assessment
- Each group’s infographic will have to have at least six facts about the battle (Chosin
Reservoir or The landing at Incheon).
- Students will do a 10 question Kahoot Quiz about the Korean War prior to exiting the
class.

Independent Practice
Students will conduct their own research about the ending of the Korean War. Afterwards
students will write a three paragraph paper explaining their opinion of how the war ended.

Follow-Up Activities: Direct Teacher Intervention and Academic Enrichment

Direct Teacher Intervention: During the next class, each group will present their infographics and
posters. The teacher will go over all six facts from each poster and give further explanation to
students who do not understand. In addition, the teacher will make a ppt. reviewing the five
questions that students got incorrect during the Kahoot Quiz.
Academic Enrichment:
Students will do a Google Images search of both North Korea and South Korea and make a Venn
Diagram about the two Koreas based on the photographs and pictures that are displayed on
Google. Afterwards, students will write a four –five paragraph essay explaining what they
observed by doing a Google Image Search. Students can use their Venn Diagram as the outline
for their paper.
