LOS ANGELES, October 1, 2018 – The American Sailing Association (ASA), in partnership with its national network of affiliate sailing schools,
announced recently a special initiative exclusively for active and retired military to thank them for their sacrifices in carrying out their respective
missions to protect the United States and its interests, and maintain the safety and freedom of U.S. citizens. For 365 days beginning on Veterans Day
2018, America’s premier sail education authority will take advantage of its unique position to express its gratitude to these brave individuals by offering
ASA’s basic sailing course (ASA 101) at a special rate.

“We believe that sailing places people in the ‘here and now’ like few other activities can,” said Lenny Shabes, ASA’s Chairman of the Board. “Immersed
in beautiful, natural scenery, sailing offers a healthy and peaceful environment in which to recharge and reduce stress – something we can all use,
especially our military who have given so much while defending our daily freedom.”

The official kick-off date is November 11, 2018, with a soft launch scheduled for October 15 2018. Participating ASA schools will offer a minimum
of $50.00 or 10% off of their regular “Basic Keelboat Sailing” (ASA 101) tuition to U.S. veterans and active duty military through November 11,
2019. Many schools will be offering a greater savings and several have sailboats to accommodate disabled students who need a more stable or custom
platform. School specific program details can be found at asa.com/veterans.

“This exclusive offer for U.S. military personnel is a token of our appreciation for the contributions they make on our behalf every single day,” Shabes
added. “We hope that it will serve as an invitation to explore the fun and exciting world of sailing with family and friends.”

During ASA’s “Basic Keelboat Sailing” course, students begin their sailing journeys by learning the essential skills to take the helm or crew a sailboat.
Taught by ASA-certified instructors, the multi-day class covers basic sailing terminology, sailboat parts and functions, basic sail trim, points of sail,
seamanship, basic navigation rules and more. Upon completion of the course, students will receive their ASA 101 certification from the ASA and can
safely continue to enjoy the sailing lifestyle with family and friends.

Active and retired military interested in this program can go to asa.com/veterans to find a participating school in their area. Alternatively, they can
consider an ASA school in a vacation destination and contact the school for participation information and other details.

If you are a boater and enjoy the holiday season, there is truly nothing better than the Marina del Rey HOliday Boat Parade. Approximately 25,000
people view the Marina del Rey Boat Parade each year and for good reason - it's a blast. If you're a boater, you can join in the fun with something simple
and easy - a few lights strewn on the mast or flying bridge. Or you can pull the stops out and try and win this thing! Either way, it's always a great way
to bond with friends and family.

Attendees can enjoy a festive day in the Marina throughout the day. The Department of Beaches and Harbors will organize the 4th Annual Snow Wonder
event at Burton Chace Park from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. leading up to the Boat Parade. It's a free event. Children can enjoy real snow, sledding, arts &
crafts, face painting, live DJ, food trucks, and much more.

A traditional fireworks display kicks off the evening. Fireworks site is on the jetty near the entrance of the main channel. All boats will begin circling
the main channel of the Marina at 6:00 PM.

The Grand Marshall this year is Janice Hahn who was elected to the Los Angeles
County Board of Supervisors in November 2016. She represents the 4th district
which stretches from Marina del Rey through the beach cities, the Palos Verdes
Peninsula, the Harbor Area, Long Beach, through the Gateway Cities and east to
Diamond Bar.

And Pordes wasn’t the only MdR boater to
climb in a boat and get his hands dirty. Howard
Leight, a billionaire entrepreneur who owns
the143-foot yacht, Leight Star, contacted his
friend Bill Kerbox saying he wanted to use
the plus-sized motor yacht as a supply ship for
the many Malibu residents who were in need.
According to a story in the L.A. Times, Kerbox
estimated the boat was stocked with about 3,000
bottles of water, 100 gallons of fuel, shovels,
snacks, dog food—and a good amount of beer.

Leight was personally affected by the blaze.

He owns homes in the area and a winery that
was mostly destroyed in the fire. After he dealt
with his own affairs he knew he wanted to help
and took to the Leight Star. A squad of surfers,
kayakers and boaters in dinghies helped unload
supplies at Paradise Cove bucket brigade style.
Although local authorities reportedly took pause
at the site of this giant yacht with a small army
of people ready to storm the beach, everyone
eventually found a rhythm and the supplies
made it to their destination.

Sextants are magical, intimidating,
historic, poetic and something some
boaters should definitely carry

A
h, the sextant…that odd magical contraption that sleeps in an aged wooden box and stored in a seldom used locker. Every once
in a while you break it out and it’s glorious to behold—there’s a poetry in its very existence. You look at the curves and the
shiny mirrors, then you spin the dials—they feel substantial and real. You gaze at the increment markers and numbers and hold
it in your hand just as Captain Cook’s navigator did with something oh so similar. As you feel the weight of this incredible
innovative invention you mutter, “I wish I knew how to use this God damn thing…”And you put it back into the really cool
wooden box.

It’s okay, you’re not alone in any of these emotions. It really is an amazing tool and so many of us would like to have a better understanding of it. It’s
in all the magazines and books—“don’t rely solely on battery operated modern electronics. They will fail or you will run out of batteries.” It’s so true
and you know it, but this thing looks like a puzzle that you don’t have the time or inclination to figure out. Maybe so, but let’s talk about it anyway.

What is undeniable about the sextant is its timelessness. The first sextant was produced by John Bird in 1759 and it is not tremendously different than
one you would buy today and is every bit as useful. And if you are a long-range cruiser, it really is an important piece of equipment to keep at the ready.
As complicated as it looks, the concepts it employs are relatively basic. As most know, the theory revolves around the consistent behavior of the sun
and stars in relation to the very fixed nature of the horizon. Celestial navigation, as it is known, has been at the core of ocean navigation for thousands
of years. It’s believed that as early as 1200 B.C. sailors and mariners were figuring out their direction by looking to the sky and doing a bit of math.

Without going into the actual math formulas that are involved, it’s fair to say that those with tendencies and talents towards arithmetic will probably have
a bit better of a time picking it up, but it isn’t overwhelming. It requires the use of a nautical almanac, the numbers gathered from the sextant siting and
a clock to provide some numbers, but it’s a simple formula: For example it may be something like: Latitude equals a particular distance minus another
number (that’s found in the almanac). That’s really broad-stroking it but the point is, at its basics, it’s a process of gathering a small amount of pertinent
numbers, then doing some adding and subtracting producing information that will keep you on track and rolling in the right direction. Although there
is a good amount to know when it comes to celestial navigation, they say if you can just master taking noon sites, you can navigate across an ocean.

While there may be some that believe celestial navigation is some antiquated esoteric process for sailing geeks that have too much time on their hands,
the truth is this skill is something that has true practical applications. Finding all of your electronic navigation equipment just got toasted or flooded-
out for one reason or another is a sinking feeling if you are out of sight of land or hundreds of miles off shore. The security of knowing that should
something like that happen, you can just open up that locker, grab that old wooden box, pull out the crazy contraption and find your way to land the way
they’ve done for centuries is well worth the trouble of learning how.

C ATALIN A CUR R E NTS

Quiet Time on
the Island

By Bill McNeely
“The Island Guy!”

“Catalina Island is such a busy place – that’s a big deterrent for me. I’ve never been there.”

This is a line in an e-mail I just got from someone curious about boating and cruising, wondering what was good about it and why someone might want
to do it.

It illustrates the view more than a few have of Catalina, but it’s more of an image that is probably based on Avalon in July or August, where folks take a
ferry ride over, grab lunch with three to six drinks at a mobbed restaurant or bar, and catch the ferry back. It’s too bad people have this overriding image
because they are missing out on the best thing about our Pacific island paradise – the rest of the year.

We are in the un-busy season at Catalina. And, of course, some places at Catalina are always un-busy, but even more so now. Honest, folks – this is
when the island shines. It would be a shame to miss it.

At this time of year, you will have no trouble getting a mooring anywhere, anytime, and the anchorage spots are wide open. There’s been a change in
mooring fees at Avalon: The old wintertime “Buy 2 nights, get the next 5 free” policy is gone, replaced with “Buy 4 nights, get the next 3 free” for the
whole year except June 15 – September 15. The rest of the island still has the old “Buy 2, get 5” discount. But everywhere, you can get a prime mooring.
At Two Harbors, the harbor patrol goes off duty about 11 p.m. this time of year, so if you are coming in at night, just pick up a mooring and relax until
morning. You can sort out specifics and pay then.
Remember that weather at Catalina is more moderate than at the mainland, and it’s good all through the winter. Winter (Dec – Feb) daily highs average
66, and nightly lows average 46. There are rainy days (see below on water), but not many each year. It may not be 80’s and tropical, but it is nice.
18 The Mariner - Issue 190 2018
Compared to other places I’ve lived (Cleveland, Chicago, Providence, Philadelphia …), winter weather at Catalina is wonderful.

Ashore, you will find things very relaxed. I especially like an Isthmus trip the weekend before the Super Bowl. Weather is usually good, and we’ve
rarely had more than five other boats in the cove! On land we get the friendliest possible service from people who are really happy to see us. I always
enjoy getting to know the “natives” better, and they like getting to know us. When I get back at a busier time, they always remember “that guy who
comes in the winter.” And not much is nicer than sitting by the big fireplace at the Banning House for a glass of wine (bring your own) before heading
back to the boat.

Avalon has the calm and steady small-town charm everyone hopes for when they first see it approaching from the water. Everything you need is there,
without any of the mob-hustle surrounding the mainland’s holidays. This year, a new and much bigger Von’s grocery will open in Avalon, and the
Conservancy will debut their Trailhead Center at the east end of Crescent Ave. Along with old favorites (a few have closed), there will be new things
to discover and explore, without the crowds of summer.

Assuming we get a bit of rain, the interior of the island will “green up.” Winter, without the blazing sun, is the perfect time for that hike you have
wanted to do, but didn’t because the heat kept you on the boat or on the beach. There is nothing quite like the unspoiled heart of Catalina at this time of
year. The only crowds you will find might be a small herd of buffalo. By the way, if you do see them, they are NOT tame! Avoid any contact. They are
also usually shy, and will avoid you, but must be left undisturbed. You can get more buffalo advice from the Conservancy, at that new Trailhead Center
in Avalon, or at the Visitors’ Center at Two Harbors.

Lastly, it’s important to remember that water on the island is in short supply. Now it’s available, but not really abundant. The big Middle Ranch
Reservoir, which serves Avalon and the eastern half of the island, was reporting about half-full at the end of October (538 acre-ft on hand of 1149 acre-ft
capacity). With an average winter for rainfall, this will rise between now and May. The alarmingly low levels we saw in late 2016 are behind us and not
likely to recur this year or next. The west end’s supplies come from a different reservoir, where current levels are also adequate but not full. Progress
continues on a longer-term fresh water answer, with a big need for more tanks for the desalination output at Avalon.

So, do not let the busy, crowded reputation of Catalina Island be a deterrent to your visits, especially at this time of year. If you really want to sit on
the same barstool for a day, you still can (and get better service). But the island in the uncrowded winter is the perfect fix for the mainland hustle. I’ll
see you there!

Bill McNeely’s Cruising Catalina Island 2nd Ed. is on Amazon is the PERFECT holiday gift! If you have a pre-2019 version and want this year’s
