Short Essay

MLA formatting is used primarily for humanities subjects. Subjects that would include

English and Literary studies. Compared to APA formatting which is used for science subjects such

as chemistry or psychology. MLA has certain characteristics such as: double spaced, 12 point and

Times New Roman font, header, and centered titles. These few characteristics are common to

APA, except one big difference is that APA requires a cover page and different citations on the

reference page. MLA also has specific requirements of putting in endnotes/ footnotes, quotations,

and how to cite both in text and on a reference page. MLA is the most common form of formatting

used in high school, while primarily English majors use MLA in college.

Task 10: Lesson Plan


Standards:

CCR.R.2 Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key
supporting details and ideas.

RL.9-10.5 Analyze how an author's choices concerning how to structure a text, order events within it
(e.g., parallel plots), and manipulate time (e.g., pacing, flashbacks) create such effects as mystery,
tension, or surprise.

Objectives: Identify the theme Poe used

Identify Unity of Effect

Identify how Poe accomplished Unity of Effect.

Supplies: Highlighter, writing utensil, blank paper, poetry hand out.

Steps of Lesson Plan:

I. Introduction
a. Today we will be talking about imagery and how it used in The Raven by Edgar
Allen Poe. We will begin by watching a spoof the Simpsons have created.
b. Simpsons version of The Raven https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLiXjaPqSyY
II. Discuss:
a. Did you listen to the words or just watch the characters?
b. What is The Raven about?
III. Read the hand out of The Raven as a class
IV. Discuss:
a. How did the text make you feel? (write that emotion at the top of your paper.)
b. How do you think Poe accomplished making you feel that way?
V. Introduce Unity of Effect
a. What is Unity of Effect? “determining the effect you would like to have on the
reader and carrying that effect throughout every element of the story.” Think of it
like a target.
b. Poe believed you could make someone feel something strictly based off reading
the text. Poe believed in Unity of Effect.
c. You create Unity of Effect by using imagery words
VI. Imagery
a. Go through and highlight each word that helped make you feel the emotion at the
top of your paper.
b. The highlighted words are imagery used in creating unity of effect
VII. Quiz
