CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Pornography or porn is the explicit depiction of sexual subject matter with the sole

intention of sexually exciting the viewer. It is to certain extent similar to erotica, which is the use

of sexually arousing imagery. Over the past few decades, an immerse industry for the production

and consumption of pornography has grown, due to emergence of the VCR, DVD, and Internet,

as well as the emergence of social attitudes more tolerant of sexual portrayals. The content of

pornography is a function of many things including culture, biology, history, and technology. Over

time, pornography has grown more and more sexually explicit as producers have taken advantage

of the freedom that accompanied the spread of democracy. Pornography and its appeal are nothing

new to mankind. What makes pornography a forbidden practice, is its promiscuous and uninhibited

nature.

Pornography is rampant within society. It is an epidemic that is damaging the lives of young

people, destroying marriages, producing false views of sex and beauty, and degrading men and

women. The pornography industry has increased rapidly, and its increased availability has

weakened moral and public standards that have traditionally stood opposed to pornography. It can

also harm other person especially women.

According to the survey conducted by United Nations in the European countries last 2016

showed that 64 percent of women, including 85 percent of 18-24-year-olds, had suffered unwanted

sexual attention in public places, including 35 percent who said they had experienced unwanted
touching. More than 60 percent of girls and young women say they do not feel safe walking home.

As conclusion they insisted that public places must be made safe for all women and girls’ and have

called for a ban on viewing adult material on mobile phones on buses - adding the harassment of

women had become normalized.

Moreover, porn can also lead to addiction that can lead to deviant behavior. According to

Love & et.al. (2015), Porn and other behavioral addictions, like gambling, on the other hand, bring

no new chemicals or substances into the body that weren’t already there. But these behaviors

initiate strikingly similar processes inside the brain like substance addictions, and that’s what

makes them potentially addictive. They hijack the brain’s reward pathways.

Certainly, we have seen examples in which deviant behavior is, at least, partially blamed

on pornography, such as serial killer Ted Bundy, from Wichita, Kansas also cited pornography as

a factor in what sparked a long term sexually vicious series of murder. He even used his victims

as a means to create his own violent pornography to further fuel his lifestyle (Wenzl, Potter,

Laviana, & Kelly, 2008). However, not everyone who views pornography, violent or otherwise,

becomes a serial murderer, rapist or other sexually motivated offender. Still, there is the question

as to how likely those who do view pornography are to turn to aggressive sexual behaviors.

Here in the Philippines, sexual violence towards women are high. According to the study

conducted by Geneta, Ortega, & Pontemayor (2009), that pornography is one of the common

factors that affects the increase of violence to women. It is very alarming that Philippines are on

top in dealing with pornography. In 2017 survey conducted by Pornhub, Filipinos spent 13 minutes

and 28 seconds on the average, representing a 43-second increase from the previous year's results,

which coincides with the 23-second increase to the global average of 9 minutes and 59 seconds.

The Philippines' average visiting time is higher by around 3 1/2 minutes than the global average.
While, Other countries with a higher-than-the-global-average visiting time are South Africa, USA,

Canada, Argentina, the United Kingdom, and France, which are ranked 2nd to 7th respectively.

(Gonzales, 2018).

The question of how pornography affects human behaviors and attitudes has been a

considerable source of controversy and public concern. Opponents of pornography believe it

encourages immorality, sexual violence, and negative attitudes toward women, while defenders

see pornography as a harmless diversion that may serve to relieve sexual tensions. Some religious

groups discourage members from viewing pornography, and support legislation restricting its

publication.

This research study is necessary to be conducted because viewing of pornographic items

has already been affecting the lives of people especially those who belong to the so-called youth

sector. The study is important since the youth should be informed about what feasible effects can

be brought by committing to pornography. Moreover, the researchers also need to find out in this

study the changes in behavior in a student just because he/she is used to viewing obscene items.

Theoretical and Conceptual Framework

This study will be mainly anchored on the sexual script theory by Simon and Gagnon. The

sexual script has three major dimensions on different levels, and this script is learned from an early

age and over time. The social script involves society, culture, religion and social position. This

script may be understood in terms of how sexuality is shaped by constitutional and collective

expectations. For adolescents, in the beginning of their sexual career, norms and values in society
play an important role in determining expectations and perceptions of sexual practice; for example,

expectations about sexual preferences and monogamy (Simon & Gagnon, 1986).

The interpersonal script explains external expectations between individuals, which means

that a mutual shared experience allows two or more actors to participate in a complex sexual act,

involving mutual dependence. The interpersonal script varies between and within different groups

of individuals. It may be influenced by subcultures, different settings and contexts in the social

arena and interactions between individuals. The third script deals with the internal, the intrapsychic

script, which means that each individual shapes a personal script according to his or her

experiences and sexual motivation. This script may be reshaped during life according to increased

sexual experiences and can be influenced by and created according to the social and the

interpersonal script (Simon & Gagnon, 1986).

On the other hand, another theory that would support this study is by Lee Ellis. Ellis (2005)

suggests a theory of rape that adds concepts of how sex hormones affect brain functioning to

portions of evolutionary, feminist, and social learning theories of rape to form the Synthesized

Theory. This theory has been designed to incorporate the strengths of the other theories, while

avoiding the weaknesses, to create a Synthesized Theory

of why rape occurs.

According to Ellis, a major strength of feminist theory is its recognition of the relationship

between rape and the power/dominance structure between the sexes. Further, feminist and social

learning theories introduced the concept that exposure to violent pornography would enhance

tendencies of some men to behave aggressively towards women,

The theories above would help to further explain the conceptual framework of the study s

shown in the Figure 1 as to the flow and direction. It explains the relationship between the table

Effects of Watching Pornography, as independent variable, and the table Students’ Behavior, as

dependent variable. The horizontal arrow represents the correlation between the effects of

watching pornography and student behaviors. All those contribute to the required information to

conduct the study.

Statement of the Problem

The study seeks to determine the effects of online pornography and its effects on the senior

high school students in relation to students’ behavior. Specifically, this study will seek answer to

the following questions:

1. What is the frequency of pornography use among male senior high students?

2. What is the extent of the use of violent pornography by the average male senior high
student?
Hypotheses

Ho; Watching online pornography do not significantly affects the behavior of male senior

high school student towards women.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant and deemed important to the following entities:

School Faculty and Administrators. The result of the study will provide them

information that can help them addressing problems connected to watching pornography. They

will give sufficient attention to high school students who watch porn. Therefore, they could

approach the students properly.

Guidance Counselors. The findings of the study will help them to better implement new

programs connected to the effects of pornography on student’s behavior. It will also help them in

developing innovative programs that is suitable for the needs of the students.

The Parents. The result of this study will give them ideas on how they will help their child

engaging on pornography. They will guide their children better than before and just like the faculty,

the parents will give more attention to their child/children.

Students. This study will help them to be a better person ang will also help them to fight

their addiction towards pornography.

Researcher and other Researchers. The findings will give them novel idea on

pornography and its impact on student’s behavior.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

The study will only focus on the effects of watching pornography on the behavior of the

senior high school students. The study will be conducted on the second semester of the school-

year 2018-2019. The research will cover only 500 male students of Senior High School

Department. Respondents will be pick using random-sampling procedure.

Definition of Terms

The following terms are used for broader understanding on their use and application in the

research study.

Pornography Addiction. It is a form of sexual addiction described by it proponents as a

condition characterized by the overuse or abuse of pornography

Pornography. It refers to sexually explicit material: films, magazines, writings,

photographs, or other material that are sexually explicit and intended to cause sexual arousal.

Porntoon. This refers to animated pornography: an animated movie with a pornographic

subject or theme.
