EPR 2603 Primary Lesson Planning Template Year 2, Sem 2 Mini-lesson

Grade Level: Grade 2

Subject: Math (addition and subtraction)
Learning Outcome: By the end of this lesson students will be able to..

 Add two digits numbers using the number line.

 Subtracting one-digit numbers using the number line and some cubes.
 Identify the concept of adding and subtracting numbers.
Resources Preparation (what do you need to do/make before
class?)
 Pre- teaching:
o White board to ask the student Before class I would prepare the board of writing
about one-digit addition. the outcomes on the board, asking the student
o Markers so the student can write bout the date, and organize the student to set in
their answers on the board. circle in front of the board.
o Smart board to show the student
a video Key vocabulary/ Target Language
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NH
Add, and, plus, take away, left, minus.

 While- teaching:
o A model that the teacher can
explain adding and subtracting to
the student, so they understand and
memorize the concept.
o A simple online game about
addition and subtraction to support
student understanding and engage
them.

 Post-teaching:
o Clips to solve the high ability
student activity.
o Cubes to help the average
student complete their activity.
o Glue to support solving the low
ability student activity.
Opening (warmer activity + teacher introduction/demonstration of small group activities)
Pre-reading and whilst-reading

 The teacher will ask the student some question about add one-digit numbers and
review their prior knowledge.
Time: 5 min

 Then the teacher will show the student a short video that they will learn from it some
Whole

of the adding and subtracting words. Also, they will learn a basic concept of adding
and subtracting.
 After that the teacher will explain the concept on the board.
 Student will have an online game that they can do it as a group with the teacher
scaffold. (http://www.abcya.com/math_match.htm)
Guided Experience (group working with the teacher) post-reading

 The teacher will group the student depending on their understanding level.
 The low group can play a simple game which is stick the frog on the twig to add and
Time: 7 min

subtract.
Small

 The teacher can scaffold be counting and reminding them how to solve the problem.
Independent Experience (small group activity 1) post-reading

 The average student will be in to two groups and they will solve the problems using
the number line and cubes. So, they should put the cube on the first number then
move the cube either forward for addition and backward for subtraction.

Independent Experience (small group activity 1) post-reading

 The high student will be in one group and they have to solve the problem then put the
clip on the right answer. So, they should do it in their minds.

Closing (review learning -LO)

Time: 2 min

Asking the student quick oral problem and they should think in one minutes to get the
Whole

answer.it will be challenge and enjoyable to the student.

Assessment (to be done during activity time, who and what will be assessed?)

 Then the student can have a self – checking from the next side of the activity.
 The teacher can assess their understanding in the closing so she can know who can
differentiate between the addition and subtraction.

Reflection WWW/EBI

The class was about adding and subtraction. How to tach the concept in a simple way was perfect
and the activity went well. In the end of the lesson the students were able to achieve all the learning
outcomes. But I think it will be better If I had a timer for the activity, so the student knows when they
should be done and what they need to do next. The transition and the reward could be better
because it did not affect in this lesson. So, I think to change the transition and use something
interest and useful. Also, it will be better if in next step I had hands on activities to support student’s
learning.

Behaviour management

I need to improve my behavior management because the class was noisy, and the student were
not listening. So, in my opinion next time I should manage their behavior by rewarding because
skinner said, “positive reinforcement strengthens behavior or increase the likelihood that the
behavior will be repeated” (Kalokyri, 2016).

Groupings/differentiation

I had three groups, so I differentiate between the student in to low, average, and high levels. It was
amazing the low students understood the concept and they tried to answer. The average and high
student had a challenge, but they could solve, and they asked for extra activities, but the time was
over.
Next Steps in learning and teaching

In next step the I should focus on having a timer to manage the activity time and have an interest
and useful transition to get student’s attention. Moreover, focusing on hands on activities to get
students interest.
