PROCEDURE FOR FINAL INSPECTION OF REVISION : 00

PIPES DATE : 01.02.2013

1. PURPOSE
The purpose of this procedure is to establish and maintain documented procedure to
ensure that the manual ultrasonic examination of Long seam & Cirseam welded pipes
has carried out to get desired quality pipes.
2. SCOPE
This procedure is applicable for manual ultrasonic examination of Long seam &
Cirseam Welded Pipes manufactured by SKIPL as per IS 3589:2001
3. RESPONSIBILITY
Personnel performing Manual Ultrasonic Testing shall be responsible for evaluation of
indications during the examination and preparation of examination reports.
4. PERSONNEL QUALIFICATION:
Personnel performing ultrasonic examination shall be qualified as UT Level II as per
ASNT-SNT-TC-1A, ISO 9712 or EN 473
5. TECHNIQUE
Pulse echo technique using angle beam probe.
6. EQUIPMENT
6.1 APPARATUS
An ultrasonic, pulsed reflection type of instrument that is capable of generating,
receiving, and amplifying frequencies of at least 0.4 to 15 MHz
6.2 SEARCH UNIT
 The inspection shall be carried out using angle beam shear wave having angles between 45°
to 70°.
 The frequency of the transducer shall be between 4 MHz
 The size of the crystal shall be either 8x9 mm.
Other angle, frequency and sizes of search units may be used for evaluating and pinpointing
indications.
7 COUPLANT
Starch + Water or Water shall be used as a Couplant.

8. INSTRUMENT CALIBRATION
The vertical linearity and horizontal linearity of the instrument shall be checked
every 6 months.

9 SURFACE CONDITION
Surface shall be free from dust, scales and spatters etc.

10 EXAMINATION COVERAGE
All Long Seam & Cirseam Welding of Pipes.

11 SCANNING SPEED

12 CALIBRATION REFERENCE STANDARD

The calibration plate shall be prepared with same material geometry and size to form DAC.
Sketch of the calibration plate is attached as Annexure I.
13 CALIBRATION SETTING
The DAC shall be prepared using reference reflector of 1.6 mm through drilled hole. The DAC
shall be prepared as mentioned below;
Adjust the gain such that the reflection from 1.6 mm TDH at ½ V paths shall be 80 % of FSH
mark amplitude and position on CRT. Without changing the gain get reflection from TDH at full
V path & 1 ½ V paths and mark amplitude and position of the same and prepare the curve
joining these three points. This DAC curve and Gain shall be used as Reference Level, (Refer
Annexure 1)
14 SCANNING SENSITIVITY LEVEL
Scanning shall be performed at a gain setting of reference level plus 6 dB. If any discontinuity
is detected by MUT the same shall be evaluated based on reference level only. (i.e. – 6 dB)
15 CALIBRATION FREQUENCY
The calibration setting shall be performed at following intervals:

At the beginning of the new production. (When there is change of size, material)
At the starting of the shift.
At the middle of the shift (Approx.6 Hrs.)
At the end of the production. (When there is change of size or material)
When there is doubt during examination.
When the system is under idle condition for more than two hours continuously.
When the personnel performing test is changed.
When there is a malfunction of the inspection equipment found
If verification of calibration does not found satisfactory; all pipes tested since last calibration,
shall be retested.

16. EVALUATION AND ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA

Acceptance Standard shall be as per ASME Sec VIII Div. 1 Appendix 12 (Annexure III)

17. RECORDS
All reports shall be sentenced in one of the following manners: as per
Annexure II
 No reportable indication- Acceptable.
 Reportable indication as noted – Repair.

18. SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

The person who is performing Manual ultrasonic Testing to ensure following safety
measures.

 Should wear personnel protecting equipments.

 Carefully see the pipe movement near MUT station
