Calculus for Business

This course is designed mainly for students majoring in business and economics. Credit will
not be given for this course if it has already been given for Math 9A. Topics include relations and
functions (linear, polynomial, logarithmic, and exponential), differential calculus of functions of one
and two variables, and integration (definite and indefinite) with applications to business and economic
problems.

Calculators are not allowed in this class. Cheating is a very big problem in this class, and is taken very
seriously. If you are caught cheating on a quiz, you may receive a zero on quizzes for the entire
quarter; if caught cheating on an exam, you receive an F in the course, and face suspension from the
university. The exams may be videotaped for additional evidence. You must show your work to
receive full credit.

The letter-grade scale will be discussed after each exam, but here is a rough idea: 88 or higher gets A,
76 or higher gets B, 64 or higher gets C. Minus grades go lower (so 73 thru 75 earns a B-). This scale
may shift one or two percent in your favor—I will tell you in class exactly what the scale was for each
exam shortly after you get them back. Any regrade requests must be made by turning your exam back
in to the TA/lecturer with the problem[s] you feel is/are misgraded, and MUST be done the day you
receive the exam. Once you and your exam leave the room you received it in, you forfeit the right to
request a regrade.
You have class with a TA Tuesdays and Thursdays. Once each week, the session will present new
material or require a worksheet to reinforce the concepts from lecture. There will be quizzes given
most Thursdays in discussion, six quizzes total (exam weeks and weeks 1 and 10 have no quiz). Each
quiz will be roughly 25 minutes in length, and will consist of problems similar to the recommended
written homework list (not WebAssign!). Nearly every day has a quiz, worksheet, or Problem of the
Day (like in math 4).
Makeup quizzes (or midterms) will be given only for those reasons that the university provides as
allowable excuses for exams (family death, hospital visit, etc..). You are welcome to supply a reason
for missing an exam—but I reserve the right to deny the request if it is outside the guidelines of the
university. If you tell me BEFORE the test, and make arrangements to take the exam EARLY, your
chances are better. It is rare that I give a makeup test after the exam date.
