Miss Alexis Smith’s Lesson Plans for Tuesday, October 30th, 2018

Standard: ELAGSE7L2: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English

capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing; a. Use a comma to separate coordinate
adjectives (e.g., “It was a fascinating, enjoyable movie” but not “He wore an old green shirt”); b.
Spell correctly.

Essential Questions (EQ): What constitutes a relationship? What are the effects of
routine/order? What are the effects of chaos?

Learning Targets: Students can understand comma rules. Students can apply cumulative and
coordinate adjectives to characters in Monster. Students can differentiate between cumulative
and coordinate adjectives.

Materials: The materials needed for this lesson plan are as follows:

o Google Slides presentation explaining coordinate and cumulative adjectives

o Paper and pencils for students who need them
o Projector

Hook (≅ 5 mins.): Miss Smith will have the Google Slides presentation projected on the
SmartBoard. The first slide will be visible and on it will be the assignment for students to answer
what they look for in relationships. Miss Smith will hold a brief discussion about this question.

Activity, Application, and Assessment (≅ 45 mins.): Miss Smith will segue into the second
slide of the Google Slides presentation. A few volunteer students will write their responses on
the SmartBoard to what an adjective is. Miss Smith will even prompt students to include
examples of adjectives. On the following slide, Miss Smith will explain to students what
coordinate and cumulative adjectives are via a few bullet points. Students will record the
information on pieces of paper. Before moving on, students will be asked to contribute verbal
examples of both adjectives.

Miss Smith will ask students to consider all the information provided about coordinate and
cumulative adjectives, and she will ask them to write a 2-paragraph fiction story of them as a
character in the novel, Monster. Students will also have a choice to develop a setting in the novel
(prison, the hood, convenience store, courtroom). Students must include examples of coordinate
and cumulative adjectives when developing these stories. After students create their stories, they
will voluntarily read them to the class.

Students who listen to readers will snap when they hear examples of cumulative and coordinate
adjectives. This will ensure students are paying attention and that they understand the types of
adjectives.

*Brain Break (≅ 2 mins.): Miss Smith will allow students to take a break from writing
in order to redirect their focus on the assignment.
Closing and Assessment (≅ 5 mins.): Miss Smith will ask students to participate in a Four
Corners exercise similar to a Likert Scale. One corner of the room will represent Strongly Agree,
the next will represent Agree, another will represent Disagree, and the last corner will represent
Strongly Disagree. Students are to walk to the corners that best represent their answers to if they
enjoyed the activity and if they understand cumulative and coordinate adjectives.
Miss Alexis Smith’s Lesson Plans for Thursday, November 1st, 2018
Standards: ELAGSE7L2: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English
capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing; a. Use a comma to separate coordinate
adjectives (e.g., “It was a fascinating, enjoyable movie” but not “He wore an old green shirt”); b.
Spell correctly; ELAGSE7RL3: Analyze how particular elements of a story or drama interact
(e.g., how settings shape the characters or plot).

Essential Questions (EQ): What constitutes a relationship? What are the effects of
routine/order? What are the effects of chaos?

Learning Targets: Students can understand comma rules. Students can apply cumulative and
coordinate adjectives to characters in Monster. Students can differentiate between cumulative
and coordinate adjectives.

Materials: The materials needed for this lesson plan are as follows:

o Google Slides presentations with instructions

o Index cards (cut into fours; one word per group member)
o Large sheets of paper
o Markers
o Plastic containers
o Plastic spoons (one per student)
o Projector
o Rocks
o Sand
o Wheel Decide wheel with group numbers 1-5 on it
o YouTube

Hook (≅ 5 mins.): Miss Smith will project the Google Slides presentation on the SmartBoard,
and the first slide will be visible. On the first slide will be the question, “What does this scene
have in common with adjectives” in relation to one of the opening scenes of Jurassic Park.
While watching the scene, students will be asked to consider the previous question. The scene
will show archaeologists at a dig site, and after the clip ends, Miss Smith will ask the question to
students. After students share their answers, Miss Smith will relate the dirt as dull words without
descriptions and the fossils as interestingly described words. Through this relation, she will
express the importance of adjectives.

Activity, Application, and Assessment (≅ 40 mins.): Miss Smith will have students form 4
groups of 4 and 1 group of 5. Miss Smith will ask for a volunteer to help pass out plastic spoons,
a volunteer to pass out markers, and a volunteer to pass out large sheets of paper to each group.
Miss Smith will read the slide with instructions slowly and clearly to students, and she will leave
the slide projected for students to reference if need be. After instructions are read, students will
use their plastic spoons and dig in the boxes of sand for the pieces of Index cards. On the cut-out
Index cards will be adjectives and a subject/noun from the novel, Monster. Each group member
will have an opportunity to find a word in the box. While students complete this entire activity,
there will be the Jurassic Park theme song playing in the background to set the mood.
Once students find all the words, they will set them aside and collaborate with each other in their
groups to create example sentences of coordinate and cumulative adjectives. They will write
these sentences on large sheets of paper with markers. Students will use their prior knowledge of
the characters in Monster, and they will use the adjectives and subjects/nouns found to generate
accurate sentences. Group members will help those who may not quite understand what
cumulative and coordinate adjectives are.

After students write their example sentences, Miss Smith will use the Wheel Decide wheel to
randomly select which groups will present. Students who listen to students who present will be
asked to rate the presenting group’s sentences out of 10. If the sentences are not as strong,
listening students will verbally help presenting students generate better example sentences. This
will ensure students have an understanding of cumulative and coordinate adjectives, as well as
the characters in the novel.

*Brain Break (≅ 2 mins.): Miss Smith will allow students to take a break from writing
in order to redirect their focus on the assignment.

Closing and Assessment (≅ 5 mins.): Miss Smith will stick a large sheet of paper on the
whiteboard, and she will hand out more markers to students who might not have one. Students
will be asked to contribute to the brainstorm map with the word “adjectives” in the center.
Students will be asked to specifically write what they know about adjectives thus far. Students
should include cumulative and coordinate adjectives, as well as the fact that adjectives can
describe other adjectives on the brainstorm map.
