b. C13.4.5 - Explain why we celebrate Nevada Day.

Objectives:
a. SWBAT use the R.A.C.E. Strategy to respond to short answer response questions.
b. SWBAT explain why we celebrate Nevada Day.

Instructional Procedures:

A. Motivation / Engagement: (15 minutes)


a. Connect to Prior Learning
i. Teacher Question: What do you know about the RACE strategy of writing short answer responses? Share
what you know at your table groups.
ii. Review the objectives with the students: By the time we are finished with this lesson, you should be able to
use the RACE strategy to respond to short answer questions.
b. Purposeful Student Discourse
i. Provocation: What does each letter stand for in the acronym RACE?
1. R: Restate The Question
2. A: Answer The Question
3. C: Cite Evidence
4. E: Explain Your Answer
ii. Teacher will compose an anchor chart with students.

B. Student Learning Experience: (30 minutes)


c. Instruct students to read article on Nevada Day.
i. Teacher: Let’s walk through using the RACE Strategy to answer a question about the article.
1. Short Answer Response Question: When do we celebrate Nevada Day?
2. Teacher will model the RACE Strategy response with help from the class.
ii. Teacher: Now, use what you’ve learned about the RACE Strategy to answer this question on your own.
1. Short Answer Response Question: Why do we celebrate Nevada Day?
2. Teacher will meet with students to review their responses and provide feedback.

C. Closure: Report Back (5 minutes)


● Teacher will cold call on students to report back with their RACE responses. Student will identify each step of
the strategy in their responses.
D. Extension:
d. Small group RACE
i. Students will be divided into groups of four.
ii. Each student will contribute one step of the RACE strategy to compose a full short answer response.
iii. Small groups will share and compare their RACE responses.

Accommodations, Modifications, and Differentiations for Diverse Learners:


● Develop anchor charts with student friendly language.
● Provide RACE strategy graphic organizers and thinking maps for students.
● Provide materials and accommodations according to students with IEP and 504 plans.
● Provide sentence starters and additional guidance during one on one conferences.

Assessment and Evaluation of Learning:


A. Formative:
a. Students will be informally assessed based on teacher observation of whole group direct instruction student responses
and by monitoring progress of students during the one on one conferences with each student.
b. Students will submit a written response that will illustrate their understanding of the stated objective.
B. Summative: ​Scheduled for October 25, 2018
a. Students will take a summative assessment for The Little Prince that will include short answer questions with
instructions to provide answers by using the RACE strategy.
b. Students will be assessed on their ability to use the RACE Strategy to respond to short answer questions.

E. Homework: Respond to three short answer response questions in Time For Kids magazine by using the RACE strategy.
