MST: Ruby Malik Unit: Math: Subtracting

Class: Grade 1 E Number of 22 students

Students:

Prior Knowledge: What knowledge are you building on?

- The student has the knowledge of counting the number from 1 – 20 and adding and
subtracting the numbers from 1 – 10.
- Student knows the math symbols such as adding ( + ), subtracting ( - ), and equal ( = ).
- Student knows to add and subtract by using visual activities as example of given picture such
as a picture with four candies and crossing out the two candies then the student will be able
to recognize that the crossing out is for subtracting and then the student will be able to solve
the problem.

- In this point what knowledge I will build on in my lesson is let the student to use their fine
motor skills of real object to solve the math activity of subtracting.

Lesson Objectives: These must be SMART objectives – specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time bound
By the end of the lesson, students will be (better) able to:

- At the end of the lesson the students will be able to Identify the concept of subtraction
as an operation to take away things from a set.
- Subtract parts from a whole
- Write subtraction number sentences
- Subtract 0 or find a difference of 0
Lesson Activities: What will students do in the lesson?

- The first 10 min let the student to sit on carpet and warm up of math symbols such as adding
(+), subtracting (-), and equal (=).
- Then given examples of how to subtracting numbers from 1 – 10 on the whiteboard by using
objects such as the color full sticks.
- Then write one subtract question in whiteboard and ask student to volunteer to solve the
question and use the object colored wood sticks to solve the question such as the question is
6 – 3 = ? the student A will hold 6 pieces of colored wood sticks and in his other hand will
take from the 6 pieces of colored wood sticks 3 pieces of colored wood sticks and then ask

- student B to volunteer and hold the 3 pieces of colored wood sticks that is taken from student

A that he was holding the 6 pieces of colored wood sticks.

- After that student B will sit on carpet with his 3 pieces of colored wood sticks then student A
and his classmate will count together how much left from his hand after the student B takes
the 3 pieces of colored wood sticks.
- After counting together let the student A write the answer on whiteboard.
- Then in each group there is a colored wood sticks to share then ask the students to sit on
their group and open their math book in subtracting word problems and solve the problems
from page 143 – 144 by using their colored wood sticks in 25 min.

- Note: if any student finishes the math book activity give the student math worksheet to solve
the questions by using colored wood sticks.

Evaluation / Assessment: How will you know your students have achieved the goal?

- While the student are in their task doing the math book words problem in subtracting I’m

going to ask one student in each group a question regards to math activity of subtracting.
- After the student done with the math book I will let the student to take colored wood sticks
with them and sit on the carpet and I will write few questions on whiteboard and the student
will answering by raising the colored wood sticks as an answer of the question in 10 min.

Personal focus: Related to PDP
