She was born at Kephiang , 19th May 1993. She is a daughter of Mr.

Khalidi and Mrs.Zaimar. She was graduated from elementary school No.02

Kepahiang in 2005. Then, she was continued study to Junior High School No.01

Kepahiang in 2008. Later, she was graduated from Senior High School No.01

Kepahiang in 2011. After that, she continued her study in Muhammadiyah

University of Bengkulu (UMB) and took English Study Program.

Education of Faculty of Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu.

Reading is one of language skills that should be mastered by students to


develop their knowledge. With good ability in reading, students can increase their
score in TOEFL test.Reading is one of some sections of TOEFL test. This part
aimed to know comprehension test taker toward text in English. Every students
gets different score in TOEFL reading section because the students have different
ability in reading. It means that reading ability correlates with TOEFL score in
reading section.
The purpose of this research to investigate and describe the correlation
between students’ reading ability and TOEFL score in reading section of the
seventh semester students English language Education Study Program of
Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu in Academic Year 2016/2017.
The population of this research is the seventh semester students of English
Language Education Study Program of Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu
in Academic Year 2016/2017. The total population is 119 students. But in this
research, the researcher only take 60 students as sample by using randmly
sampling technique. The instruments that are test and document that taken from
Language center Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu. The data are analyzed
by using product moment formula by Sugiono to know the correlation between
students’ reading ability and TOEFL score in reading section.
The result of this research show that there is positive correlation between
students’ reading ability and TOEFL score in reading section of English Language
Education Study Program of Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu
was0,65523 and was include high category. In other words, r-calculation is
bigger than r-table (rxy>rt). Therefore, it can be said that the hypothesis of the
research is accepted, and the null hypothesis is refused.
Based on the result of the research above, the researcher suggest that the
students should improve their ability in reading more actively for supporting their
score in TOEFL test especially in reading section.

Membaca adalah salah satu kemampuan bahasa yang harus dikuasai oleh
siswa untuk mengembangkan ilmu pengetahuan mereka. Dengan kemempuan
membaca yang baik, siswa bisa meningkatkan nilainya dalam TOEFL tes.
Membaca merupakan salah satu dari beberapa bagian dalam tes TOEFL. Bagian
ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pemahaman peserta terhadap teks bahasa Inggris.
Setiap siswa mendapatkan perbedaan nilai pada bagian membaca di TOEFL tes
karena siswa mempunyai perbedaan kemampuan dalam membaca. Hal itu berarti
kemampan membaca berhubungan dengan nilai TOEFL pada reading section.
Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk menginvestasi dan menggambarkan
hubungan antara kemampuan membaca siswa dan nilai TOEFL pada reading
section mahasiswa semester tujuh program studi bahasa inggris di Universitas
Muhammadiyah Bengkulu pada tahun
Populasi dari penelitian ini yaitu mahasiswa semester tujuh program studi
bahasa Inggris tahun akademik 2016/2017. Dengan jumlah 119 siswa. Tetapi,
dalam penelitian ini, peneliti hanya mengambil 60 siswa sebagai sampel dengan
menggunakan teknik random. Alat yang digunakan dalam penelitian iniyaitu tes
dan dokumen yang diambil dari UPT.Pusat Bahasa Universitas Muhammadiyah
Bengkulu. Data di analisis dengan menggunakan rumus Product Moment dari
Sugiono guna mengetahui hubungan antara kemampuan membaca siswa dan nilai
TOEFL pada reading section.
Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada hubungan positif antara
kemampuan membaca siswa dan nilai TOEFL pada reading section Program studi
bahasa Inggris Universitas Muhammadiyah Bengkulu dengan hasil 0,65523 dan
termasuk dalam kategori tinggi. Dengan kata lain, t-hitung lebih besar dari t-tabel
(rxy>rt). Sehingga bisa dikatakan bahwa hipothesis dalam penelitian ini diterima,
dan hipothesis null ditolak.
Berdasarkan dari hasil penelitian diatas, peneliti menyarankan bahwa
siswa harus meningkatkan kemampuan membaca mereka lebih aktif untuk
mendukung nilai TOEFL terutama dalam reading section.
