Second Sunday of Advent
We are very grateful for the many visitors from out of town who come to this
church at this time of year. You are a blessing to us and enliven our spirits.
I need to extend a word of thanks to Fr. Brian who so dutifully (and
enthusiastically!) runs our raffles three times a year. The next drawing is Sunday,
December 16 at 6:30pm. You need not be present to win. This is an important
fundraiser for the Shrine and we are grateful for your generosity.
The liturgical season of Advent is, of course, a time to prepare ourselves for the
birth of Our Savior at Christmas. It’s a good time to ask ourselves how we are
doing spiritually. How is this Advent different from last year at this time? In
what ways have we grown in our spiritual life, and in what ways have we
regressed? Is Jesus Christ more central, or too much of an afterthought? Do our
daily routines help us to remember the presence of God? Who are the people in
our lives who provide a great example in the spiritual life? Do we ask them for
help? Do we thank them? Who are the people in our lives who need our help?
Are we approachable? Do we extend our time to the people who need our help?
Do we do so in a spirit of generosity?
Let us all pray for each other. May the profound act of God’s entrance into the
world as a baby inspire us in humility and love.

Year- End Gifts

As the end of the year approaches, we invite you to consider making a tax-deductible gift to the Shrine.
There are a number of ways to make this gift.
Cash/check - may be given in person or via the U.S mail. Please note that the gift must be postmarked by
December 31 to be counted for a 2018 tax deduction.
• Credit card – Make a gift on line – www.stanthonyshrine.org with a credit card. Or, you may call
the Development Office (857-206-7243) and give your credit card over the telephone. Our
electronic giving kiosks in the lobby, and at the information booth are two other options for credit
card gifts.
• IRA Charitable Rollover – If you or someone you know is 70 ½ or older and has a traditional
Individual Retirement Account (IRA), you can use your required minimum distribution to support
the Shrine through a Charitable Rollover gift. Contact the administrator of your plan and ask that
your distribution be a charitable rollover to the Shrine.
• Matching Gifts – A corporate matching gift is a tremendous way to increase your personal gift to
the Shrine. We encourage you to take advantage of your employer’s matching gift program.
• Securities – If you would like to make a gift of securities to the Shrine, please contact Maryanne
Rooney-Hegan, Director of Development 9617) 542-6440 ext. 115, or
mrooneyhegan@stanthonyshrine.org.
Thank you for all you do to help us live out the Gospel in Boston. If you have questions about making a
gift, please contact Maryanne Rooney-Hegan at (617) 542-6440 ext. 115.
New Mass Schedule
There was a time here at Arch Street when Mass was regularly held at three different locations in the building, and
there was a Mass every fifteen minutes. Fast-forward to 2018 and we find ourselves in need of changing our weekend
Mass schedule, starting the first of the year. There are several goals that we are trying to accomplish with this change
in schedule, as explained below.
1. We would like to bring people together. It is very important that we not view the Mass schedule as we would
movie times at a theatre. With a movie crowd, it doesn’t matter much matter who else is with us or whether the place
is full or empty. Our experience of the movie doesn’t vary that much based on the number of people attending. We
would suggest that at a gathering for the Eucharist, it matters a lot how many others are present, who they are, and how
each of us participates. We inspire each other by our attendance and our participation. We need the Mass to truly be a
gathering, one of faithful people, all of whom inspire one another. By showing up, we make a profound statement
about ourselves: that we are working on our journey of conversion, that we are working on our relationship with Jesus
Christ and with one another. The gathering for the Eucharistic should feel as though other people are along with us on
our journey of sacrifice and love. It is a very important Catholic idea that we are not alone on this journey. We do this
with other people. The worship space needs to feel more full. This is the first and most important consideration in
changing the schedule.
2. We would like to have a schedule that is relatively easy to remember. Right now, the mid-morning schedule is
somewhat comical in this regard: 7:30, 9:00, 10:00, 11:15. What newcomer can remember that?
3. In general, we would like to have music at Mass. It isn’t always possible, but for most Masses, most Sundays, we
want to have music for Mass. Official Church documents on the Catholic Mass always encourage participative music
at Mass. It’s one of many ways in which we come together as a group.
4. We would like to have a schedule that all of the various constituents can reasonably do. There are more different
groups than one might initially guess: Presiders, sacristans, security people, Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers,
musicians, and, of course, worshipers.
5. We want to have as few changes (and therefore as little disruption) as possible.
6. We want to encourage young people to attend and become engaged in Church, so we add a Sunday night Mass.

These changes are effective on the weekend of January 5 and 6, 2019.

Saturday Mass Schedule

The new schedule, beginning in 2019, eliminates the 4:15pm Mass in the first floor church and
the 5:30pm Mass in the second floor church. The 4pm Mass in the second floor church will
continue to have The Arch Street Band.
