Huna Psychology: An Introduction

Huna (tm) is not an "occult" system-- that is, hidden from all but a
few
"favored" adherents or "initiates." It is based on knowledge of human
psychology and of how the various parts of the human personality
function. When you learn how the psyche works, you will be able to see
how it functions properly and with the greatest effectiveness. Huna em-
phasizes normal living in every way and makes everyday life more
liveble. In times of stress, Huna offers effective relief in any
situation. As
Max Freedom Long put it, "If you are not using Huna, you are working
too hard!"

Basic Concepts

The basic tenets of Huna can be summarized in these words, "NO

HURT: NO SIN," that is, the Huna concept of "sin" is doing something
hurtful. "SERVE TO DESERVE," that is, be of help and service to
others in order to feel worthy of good things in your life. A more
concise
statement is the Huna motto: The Hurtless and Helpful Life.

Huna Will Work for Everyone

Potentially, Huna principles will work for everyone. When the

desired
results are not obtained, Huna psychology reveals the causes of the
failure. The best place to start learning the basics of Huna psychology
is
the correspondence course, written by Dr. Wingo entitled "Letters on
Huna: A Course in the Fundamentals of Huna Psychology." It is an ex-
cellent basic text that will give you a clear statement of what Huna is
and how to use it. A good, quick, and thorough introduction is "Huna:
The Ancient Religion of Positive Thinking," by William Glover.
For further study, the works of Max Freedom Long are recom-
mended. "The Secret Science at Work" (1953) reviews the account of
the discovery of the ancient coded secrets of the kahuna and gives
suggestions for the use of Huna principles. "The Secret Science Behind
Miracles" (1948) presents a more detailed account of the search and
the method of discovery. An excellent review and source of daily inspira-
tion is "Growing Into Light" (1955). Two technical manuals on special
aspects of the research are "Self-Suggestion and the New Huna
Theory of Mesmerism and Hypnosis" (1958) and "Psychometric
Analysis" (1959). The masterpiece of comparative religion, "The Huna
Code in Religions," was published in 1965.

Is "Psychic" Ability Necessary?

It is not necessary to have "psychic" ability in order to use Huna.

Such ability is natural to everyone and is developed to a greater extent
by some, while in others such qualities are latent, or unrecognized,
although used naturally. Because the principles of Huna psychology in-
volve the study of universal laws and basic concepts, most people find
that the intuition becomes stronger and "psychic" or "spiritual" aware-
ness begins to develop. This awareness is the by-product of profound
study in any area, whether astrology or physics, art or Tarot,
biochemist-
ry or any of the systems of psychology, including Huna.

You are More than a Body

Because you are conscious of your own existence, you realize that
you are alive and that a process of thinking is taking place. You are
aware of your body and its various functions, both voluntary and in vol-
untary. The part of you that is all of these things-- the real you, so
to
speak-- enables you to be conscious of the fact that you exist as a
spirit-
ual or psychic "person" in addition to the body in which you seem to
live. It is natural, therefor, to speak of YOU and YOUR BODY as two
parts, whether they are actually separate or not.

Conscious and Subconscious Minds

At times a person speaks of "having a little talk with himself" in

order
to make up his mind about a decision or to work up courage for some-
thing very difficult or frightening. "I told myself there was nothing to
worry
about," we might say. Or, in trying to make a decision, we have a little
conversation "with ourselves" and mentally list the pros and cons of the
alternatives. It is as if one part of us argues for one side, while a
second
part comes up with arguments for the other!
Whether we consider that there are really two of us inside our
minds,
or two functions of one mind, at least it seems for the moment that two
separate minds exist. At the time the function of the mind is dual and
not
single. Since most psychological systems recognize a subconscious part
of the mind, it is natural to state that there are two minds or psychic
entities. For the purpose of discussing the psyche, we may speak of two
minds or two selves: the conscious-mind self and the subconscious-
mind self.
It is the conscious mind which the kahuna called "uhane," or the
middle self, the part of man that is conscious of his own existence and
has the ability to reason. The subconscious mind was "unihipili," or the
basic self. Max used the term "low self". This is the one we "have a talk
with." The term "low" has no reference to rank or importance, but only
to the fact that it is "below" the level of consciousness (thus the term
sub-consious) and has its bodily center in the solar plexus, below the
consciousness centered in the head. Remember that the function of this
part of you is very important and the low or basic self has a very large
part to play in your life.

There is Yet a Third Part of Man

The third part is the High Self-- called by the kahuna the name "Au-
makua." This is sometimes called the "superconscious," but writers un-
familiar with Huna psychology may use that word to designate the sub-
conscious. The High Self is the "older, utterly trustworthy, parental
spirit." The High Self may, in religious terms, be called a sort of
guardian
angel who helps us when requested to do so, but does not necessarily
interfere unless asked to help. However the concept of "God" or deity
was considered to be above the level of High Self, which is an integral
part of the human personality. It is our divine connection with God. It
is
the High Self, using whatever higher resources which may be required,
that brings all desired conditions into reality.

The Triangle of Trinity

The symbol of the triangle suggests that once all three selves are
working together with perfect union and harmony, we have perfect com-
munication among the three selves. Even though we often speak of
separate functions of the individual three selves, remember that they
must always work together to function effectively. When we refer to an
individual self, we must always include the others in proper relation to
that part. It is at this stage of harmony that there is "direct" contact
from
the middle self to the High Self, because all three are a harmonious
three-self team. This is the perfect or whole person.
All three selves have their proper part to play in the life of each
of us,
and they must work together to accomplish whatever is desired,
whether solving a problem in the present, or trying to work for a better
future. When the three selves work harmoniously together, things can
happen that may appear to be "miracles." But when you know the
proper and normal functions of the three selves and how they work to-
gether, the miracles will seem to be in no way "supernatural."
The ideal to which we aspire is to become a complete person, with
all parts united. As Max Freedom Long expressed it: "Our task as middle
selves is primarily that of learning to work consciously and properly
with
both the low [basic] self and the High Self."

"Aka" or Shadowy Bodies

There is an original blueprint or pattern, printed on transparent

material, which fits each of the three selves in every detail. Compare
this
with the transparent overlays used in encyclopedias to show the various
skeletal, muscular, or nervous systems of the physical body. The
kahuna of ancient Hawaii talked of the three selves of man, with their
exact duplicates, which they referred to as aka-bodies. This aka-
substance formed a sort of invisible pattern or "aura" around each of
the three selves, keeping the blueprint intact, but capable of changing
shapes temporarily to form a connecting thread between the basic self,
the middle self, and the High Self.
Since aka has a sticky quality and stretches without breaking, when
contact is made between two persons, a long, sticky thread is drawn
out between the two, like a silver spider-web, and the connection be-
tween them remains. Further contacts add other aka-threads and these
are braided together into an aka-cord, resulting in strong rapport be-
tween the two persons. Such an aka-cord must be kept strongly braided
between the basic self and the middle self, and between the basic self
and the High Self, in order for the three to work harmoniously together.

Mana, or Vital Force

The kahuna recognized the magnetic and the opposite, repelling

nature of vital force, or "mana," but unfortunately left no detailed ex-
position on the subject. They knew the force as a thing which had to do
with all thought processes and bodily activities. The life force was the
essence of life itself. The kahuna symbol for this life-force was water.
Water flows and so does vital force. Water fills things. So does the
vital
force. Water may leak away and so may vital force. All thinking involves
an electrical-like activity of Mana. The word "mana-o" means "think-
ing," the "o" added to show that the process is one of using Mana to
produce thought. As each thought is formed it is given its aka body and
is fastened by a thread of the same substance to thoughts which came
before it ("association of ideas" in terms of modern psychology).
Mana is taken from the food and air by the basic self and is stored
in
its aka-body, but it is shared with the middle self and with the High
Self.
The Mana, when used as the life-force of the middle self is changed in
some subtle way. The kahuna of old symbolized this as a dividing of the
basic Mana into two kinds, and called it Mana-Mana, indicating that it
was doubled in power, so that it could be used by the middle self to
direct the inner or basic self. This is the force we know vaguely in
modern psychology as "the will." It is also the force which should at all
times be strong enough to make the inner self carry out every sug-
gestion. It is seldom used in its full strength, and so the basic self
gets
out of hand or flits from one activity to another, without carrying out
any
suggestion or command fully.

Accumulating a Surcharge of Mana

We know that taking a slow, deep breath will give us an extra

amount of energy. We can use certain techniques combined with
specific mental images to accumulate a surcharge-- an extra large and
powerful charge-- of vital force any time we need it. This assumes that
we are in reasonably good health and are not weakened by physical or
emotional trauma. We can use these surcharges of Mana in several
very valuable ways, particularly in healing ourselves and others, and in
making a Prayer-Action that will have real power.

An Action of the Mind

The kahuna believed that by an action of the mind a person adds to

the amount of Mana created from food and air. The extraction process
is quickened. This theory is supported by our physiologists, who have
found that when we digest food it is not all used at once, but is changed
to blood sugar, or glycogen, and oxidized with oxygen from the air we
breath to give us such amounts of force and energy as we may need for
the work we happen to do. The basic self, who tends to all such
matters, can at any time begin to take in more air and cause more blood
sugar to be burned to create more of that strange chemically-manufac-
tured force we call Mana. The basic self learns to do this easily in most
cases. By combining the Mana from food and air with additional Mana
from unlimited cosmic sources, we can always have the power we need
to accomplish whatever we truly and justly desire.
The accumulation of a surcharge of vital force is accomplished
simply by explaining to the basic self within just what it is to do and
then
asking it to do it. To help the basic self, we can start breathing more
deeply, add the thought of accumulating a large surcharge of Mana,
and the process begins.

The Mana Rises Like a Fountain

The kahuna used the symbol of water for Mana. When he wished to
accumulate a surcharge, be breathed deeply and visualized Mana rising
like water rising in a fountain, higher and higher until it overflowed.
The
body is pictured as the fountain and the water is the Mana. Another
image that can be used is filling a sphere with light and mentally seeing
your entire body surrounded by this sphere and fully illuminated.

An Exercise

Exercise or any form of physical exertion always starts the basic

self
manufacturing more Mana, otherwise we would use up what we have in
a few minutes and would begin to feel faint. Athletes know that they can
go only so far on their first wind, which is the charge of Mana they
happen to have in their body and aka-body at the start. Then in a short
time they get a fresh supply of energy (the second wind) and can then
keep going steadily and at top speed. It is important to use the sur-
charge, over and above the basic physical energy required to maintain
health and daily activity, in working toward a specific goal, such as
healing or solving a social problem.

Or a Mental Attitude

Instead of exercising, we can assume the mental attitude of one get-

ting set to run a race. We hold the picture in mind of getting ready to
run, we breathe more rapidly and tense up the muscles a little. The
basic self will begin to create the desired vital force.

A Sense of Well-being

Persons with a low normal charge-level of viral force have found

that
they can sense the additional surge of Mana after taking on an extra
supply. It adds to the sense of well-being, of physical strength and en-
durance, of will and determination, and it sharpens the mind, makes
memorization faster and easier, and the senses more acute. This can
easily be tested by checking the clearer vision or sharper memory after a
surcharge of vital force.

Mana and Miracles

The point that is most important when considering Mana or vital

force
is that when you have learned to accumulate a surcharge, it is possible
to use it, with the help of the High Self, to perform "miracles," which
range all the way from slow and simple healing to miraculous changes in
bodily tissue and even the fabric of the future.
The High Self contacts us of its own accord in our sleep, making use
of the connecting aka-cord. Our thoughts of the day, with our plans,
hopes, fears, loves, and hates, are examined, taken as duplicate
thought-forms, and at the same time vital force is taken. This vital
force
is stepped up to the high "voltage" and is used by the High Self to con-
struct a shadowy body which will materialize as part of our future. Such
though-forms were described by the kahuna as "seeds" and were
symbolized as seeds, which were vitalized by the High Self and grew
into actualities of the future.

Let the Rain of Blessings Fall

The High Self not only takes from us the vital force it needs, but
returns a compensating force to us. This is vital to our health and well-
being. This return can be pictured as a shower of Mana falling from the
up-welled fountain, as a gentle mist, a "rain of blessings." Thus the
three-fold communication symbolized by the triangle is complete. After
consciously contacting the High Self for the purpose of sending a gift
of Mana and also presenting a "prayer-picture," the kahuna ended his
prayer with these words: " The prayer takes its flight. Let the rain of
blessings fall."
Daily contact and guidance in all of our lives may be had from the
High Self as our Divine Connection-- but only if requested. All the more
reason to discover for yourself the basic concepts of Huna and how
they may be put to practical use in your own life-- the three selves and
their functions as a unified team and the importance of understanding
how Mana, the life force, can be increased and utilized to bring about a
better life now and for the future.

With the resurgence of interest in the unexplained phenomena,

whether called "Magic" or "New Age" or whatever, it is refreshing to
have the moderate and reasonable view of HUNA as a frame of
reference in examining not only the phenomena, but the entire structure
of man's make-up, and therefore the normal functioning of the psyche.
Max Freedom Long used the word "Magic" in the title of his first book
"Recovering the Ancient Magic" (1936), but he carefully defined the
word as he used it:

All the efforts to bring about changes without the use of

ordinary means known in general and to Science in its
own field fall under the classification of MAGIC.

Another definition is "the art of causing changes in consciousness

at
will."
It will be noted at once that no reference is made to forcing
"supernatural" beings to do one's will or otherwise invoking some
extra-personal "spirit" or "guide." In the older series of research
reports,
published under the title "HRA Bulletins," Dr. Long presented a
summary of so-called magical practices in light of Huna concepts,
written in his inimitable style, with just a touch of humor combined
with
some serious and very practical instructions. This article, subtitled "A
Complete 'Course' in One Lesson," was originally published December
1, 1954 in "HRA Bulletin" No. 110, pp. 3-7.

How to Become a Magician

TO LEARN TO BECOME A MAGICIAN you will need to learn to use

some of your native talents which you may not as yet have taken time to
develop. There are several of these talents. Men and women have
demonstrated them all about us. Hardly anyone lacks latent psychic
abilities which may be trained and made to work in the performance of
magical operations. Telepathy is so easy to develope that many use it
without training. Ability to sense the presence of the beloved "dead" is
very common, and many have excellent mediumistic powers which
could enable them to perform that part of healing magic which depends
largely on spirit aid.

Step One
DEVELOPING THE HYPNOTIC WILL. Begin at once to learn to use
hypnotism, Mesmerism, and the two in combination. To do this you will
begin at once to practice accumulating mana (life force) surcharges.
When you can accumulate a very large surcharge, you can then
begin practicing to learn Mesmerism, which is causing the mana
surcharge to flow through your hands or along your line of vision into a
subject, carrying with it well-made mental pictures or thought-form
clusters (which you will have made in advance by the use of your
"will").
If your mana, which is the vital force of the body, is sufficiently
accumulated and is discharged strongly into the subject, it will over-
power the basic self in him and force him to accept the mental pictures
as his own, then react to them. Healing magic is performed in this way.
The subject can be made to relax, to sleep, and so on. If the shock
of mana is sufficient, and the thought-form cluster made with enough
power, it can break up and replace complexes in the basic self of the
subject. If there are spirits fastened to the subject, and if he has
been
brought to turn over a new leaf so that he will refuse to respond to the
promptings of the spirits, they may be driven out of him and
hypnotically
commanded to stay away, after first being broken away by the Mesmeric
shock of the mana you have projected.
Be warned that if you project a surcharge and hurtful mental
pictures
to or at a subject, and these fail to be accepted by his low self, or
are
blocked from action by his High Self or by his spirit friends who may be
watching over him, the force and the mental picture will rebound, often
with greatly increased power, and lodge in your own basic self, making
it
the victim. Use the evil eye or spell-casting methods at your peril.
Also
be warned that all about you are witting and unwitting magicians who
may be consciously or unconsciously projecting mana and mental
images at you-- weak or strong, good or bad.
Begin at once to practice becoming hurtless and helpful in your
every thought and deed. Learn to radiate good and helpful and loving
thoughts and do all you can to do good. In this way you will soon build
a
permanent wall of radiation around you which will act as a great magnet,
of which you are the center. It will attract the good by its positive
pole
and repel the bad. If you suspect that many bad thought-form clusters of
sickness, bad luck, etc. or many spirits of an evil nature, are already
bothering you from former projections against you by magicians, or
because you have been bad enough to attract to yourself equally bad
spirits, begin at once to use this affirmation frequently:

"GOOD, GOOD, GOOD! I AM GOOD. I think only

good and helpful thoughts. I do good and eject all
hurtful deeds I try to find and throw our daily any
thoughts of hate, anger, greed, jealousy, and the
like. I now prove my unwavering determination to
swing completely over to the side of GOOD, by
DOING some good deed, no matter how small,
before continuing my day's activities."

THE ASPIRING MAGICIAN will do well to remember that most of his

or her daily tasks are performed to help others to some degree. If each
task is approached and blessed as a SERVICE or a good deed lovingly
done for others, the good will be true coin of the realm.

Step Two
STRENGTHEN YOUR WILL. This is a continuation of the step you
learned to take earlier. After you become proficient in the use of the
Mesmeric force or low mana, begin to strengthen your middle-self WILL,
or mana-mana. You must first take on a fair surcharge of low mana
because, without this being present in your body, the middle self
(conscious mind) cannot get enough of it to make up a batch of strong
will power. This power is developed by daily use of exercises of holding
your mind and full attention on something for as long as you are able.
Make a mental picture of the face of a loved one and hold it before your
minds eye without allowing the face to change in any way. When it
"slips" and begins to change or fade, rest a minute or two. Accumulate
a little more mana, and try again. Keep a watch by you and note how
long you can hold mental pictures. At first you may find a few seconds
your limit. When you have practiced daily for several years, you will be
able to hold the basic self to the task as long as five minutes, and will
by
then have developed will power strong enough to create, by a few
minutes of this concentrated attention on a mental picture, POWERFUL
THOUGHT-FORM CLUSTERS which can be projected by the
Mesmeric method described in Step One.
If you wish to know whether you have a strong will now, test with
the
Biometer (Note: this refers to the scale used for psychometric analysis
readings described in Max Freedom Long's book "Psychometric
Analysis," and the accompanying scale for measuring vital force.) Tests
made at intervals will show whether your practice is getting results. Be
warned that if you develop your hypnotic or middle-self will without at
the
same time developing the ability to become GOOD and BETTER day by
da, you will soon have a very unbalanced biometric pattern and it will
begin to cause you much more breakdown and trouble.
Some imitation magicians- those not having been trained thoroughly
in Huna- use their hypnotism openly. Beware of these unless you have
obtained their signature, written with their own pen and with ink, and
have tested it on the Biometer to learn whether they are "black" or
"white" magicians. The black will show a perfect will-pattern but almost
no personality circle, or, if a circle shows, it will be counter-
clockwise
and usually far from round.
In your own work as a budding magician, avoid the use of hypnotic
suggestion as something apart from the Mesmeric element. Use
Mesmerism as in Step One, with the hypnotic will simply as an adjunct to
aid in creating the very strong mental picture of the GOOD condition
which you wish to implant powerfully in the basic self of those whom you
help and heal. NEVER ADMIT THAT YOU ARE A MAGICIAN, just say
that you have a natural gift for healing and will be happy to try to use
it
if the one needing help will turn over a new leaf, etc.
Helping others to turn over a new leaf and to become ready to be
healed is the GOOD DEED at its best. Remember this always.
TELEPATHIC OR PROJECTED MAGICAL HEALING is an important
part of this work. Contact must be established with the ones to be
helped. A hand-shake will string an aka thread between you which will
make it possible for your basic self to make contact at any time. Or the
basic self can follow the aka thread that is fastened to a signature
written in ink. This contact is telepathic in its nature, and you can
send
with Mesmeric force a mental picture of healing which has been
constructed through the use of your WILL. Practice will enable you to
become more and more powerful as you go along. Also, results build up
slowly if the magical treatment is repeated over and over.

Step Three
RUBBING ALADDIN'S LAMP. No magician should be without a
good Aladdin's Lamp. Go to a junk shop at once and buy one. Take it
home and accumulate as large a surcharge of mana as you can. Then
build up your will to a high point of concentration and create a mental
picture of what you wish to have the Genie of the Lamp do for you
when you rub the Lamp and he appears to do your bidding. Millions of
people in the past twenty centuries may have rubbed a Lamp without
getting the slightest response. Their trouble has been that they did not
know that the "oil" needed to fill this type of Lamp is not oil at all,
but
is a large surcharge of mana. So build up your surcharge, make your
mental image, and then rub your Lamp. If you don't have a Lamp,
remember that it is only a symbol-- the symbol of LIGHT. Just think of a
genie who embodies all the goodness and so all the LIGHT you can
imagine. Then rub something! Rub your hands together and affirm:

"I am now calling to the Spirit of Light who

remains ever aware of me and ever ready
to come to me at my request when I fill myself
full of the mana which is the force or oil which
enables the Lamp of the Light to become lighted
and cast its rays down to enlighten me on this
darkened level of being. I affirm with full faith that
I now believe that my call has been heard and
that the Spirit of Light above me has come and
stands ready to receive the oil to be used for
helping and guiding and illuminating me and those
whom I will help. I now send flowing upward along
the connecting shadowy cord a strong flow of mana.
With it I send my carefully and powerfully constuct-
ed mental picture of the condition which I ask be
brought about."

Many aspiring students have given up at this point because they

could not see the Spirit of Light. This is greatly to be regretted, for
the
Spirit is always there and will always accept the oil and begin shedding
helpful light. A daily replenishing of the Light which stands before the
altar of your Innermost Being may be needed if the request you make
demands much magical work. All experienced magicians know that the
instant and complete performance of a task by a Spirit of the Lamp is
possible only at rare intervals. They are content to work for many days
to get the full task completed.
BE WARNED at this point that if you attempt to use the magic of the
Lamp without first purifying yourself with many lustrations and
fumigations, drawings of signs and magical circles about you, there will
be grave danger that you will evoke the spirit of a dead person-- a
spirit
just as uncleansed and tainted with evil as you may happen to be. If you
are greedy and plan selfish gain, the spirit may be equally so and may
take your surcharge of mana and turn to bite the hand that feeds it.
Keep in mind the fact that all fumigations, incense burnings, washings,
and rituals of cleansing are, just like the "oil" and the "Lamp," merely
symbolic. These things, when read about by a magician in a book of
instructions tell him that a cleansing of his thoughts and heart is
indicated. Go back to Step One and check what was revealed to you
concerning GOOD.
Down the centuries magicians have written out their knowledge in
the form of "evocations" and "incantations," also "invocations."
Invariably they have veiled the inner meanings. For this reason the
student must take care not to be caught in the foolish trap in which so
many have been caught. In the semi-secret orders in Europe and
America even today, they are drawing magic circles, performing strange
physical rites, making fumigations, compounding absurd mixtures of
frog's eyes and the leaves of plants gathered in a cemetery on the night
of the full moon, and so on. Rare books containing rituals and formulae
bring hundred of dollars, and men and women gather to study and to try
to use them, always ending with nothing accomplished.
If the student has seen such books, and there are many of them,
dating from the times of early Egypt on, be warned that the long
repetition of invocations with the exact pronunciation of Names of
Power are quite useless to the uninitiated. The magicians of all ages
have piled one absurdity upon another in their writings, all for the
purpose of causing the greedy outsider to waste his time, if he is that
foolish, trying to perform rites which cannot be performed, and to learn
to
pronounce unpronounceable "names" without number. The famous
"Seventy-two Names of God" are part of this blind. So are the endless
names given to supposed gods and demons and spirits, good or bad.
LOOK BEHIND THIS VEIL OF SECRECY FOR THE THREE
ELEMENTS WHICH ARE SYMBOLIZED IN ALL TRUE MAGIC! Watch
for the veiled mention of the three selves and their three mana forces.
Watch for the inner cleansing rather than the outer. You can call a
spirit,
be it bright and good and helpful, or bad and strong and dangerous,
provided you have made a contact with it and so have established an
aka thread along which you can send a telepathic call-- a flow of mana
with the picture of its hearing and coming to you. But just to know the
name of a spirit and to speak it is a waste of time. There may be a
thousand spirits bearing that same name, and besides, with no contact
already made, your call will be empty. Be warned, however, that if some
spirit happens to be near, be it good or bad, it may hear and accept the
call, taking all you have to offer, if it is bad, and perhaps in the end
taking your body away from you. Evil spirits may remain bound to the
earth for centuries, and may become most wise in the matter of doing
evil for and against the living magician who is even a fraction as evil.
You have read of "sympathetic magic" in which like produces like--
a
sprinkling of water causing a rain, and the pouring out of an oblation
of
wine to the gods bringing about an outpouring of good things to you in
return. This is also a blind to veil away the ignorant. Like brings like
only when a powerfully constructed mental picture is presented with
much mana to the Spirit of Light so that on this likeness the Spirit may
construct for you a reality. The old fertility rites supposed to bring
increase in crops and flocks were of use only if they served to picture
the desired things and to furnish through emotion some mana to
empower the gods.

Step Four
AMULETS, WALLS OF PROTECTION, ETC. Having you that all
drawing of magic or ritual circles, pentagrams, and such things belongs
to the outer or symbolic side of magic, it needs to be said that a few
physical things can be used by the magician as points around which to
build mental pictures or images with a mixture of aka substance,
thought-forms and mana.
TO MAKE A RABBIT'S FOOT EFFECTIVE, for instance, it is not
enough to preserve such a foot and carry it on your person. The foot
must be gazed upon and concentrated upon a few minutes each day
for a number of days, and the student must picture the foot as a center
about which he is building layers, day after day, of that plaster made
of
thought, mana and aka substance. As all mental pictures are made of
these three ingredients, and as a mental picture is as enduring as any
strong memory (which is, in actuality, constructed of these three
elements), the picture of a radiating center of GOOD surrounding the
foot of the rabbit soon becomes a very real thing. But the foot must be
encased in thoughts of GOOD FOR ALL, not just for its owner, or it will
be valueless. THIS IS A SECRET WHICH FEW KNOW. To become a
center which will attract good and ward off evil, the foot must be used
in
connection with the bringing of good to others as well as to the owner,
and it must be used when possible to ward off or remove evil in the
same way.
ANY OBJECT, LUCKY PIECE, OR AMULET may be treated in the
same way. Shrines are centers into which GOOD has been poured in
this way by a saint or magician and made strong and enduring to radiate
back to the worshiper all the good he radiates to it in worship. Such a
center may be filled daily with fresh mana, and the good spirits may be
invited to come to it daily to obtain enough mana to give them power to
perform good deeds on the mental and physical levels. Like birds
coming to refresh themselves in the bird bath in your garden, and then
going to clear out hurtful insects, so the good spirits will soon begin
to
come, taking the water of mana and looking to see what requests you
have left with the mana for them to fulfill. Your requests are mental
pictures of things you desire the spirit friends to bring about if they
can.
Pour a mana surcharge into your magic center, along with the mental
pictures of good conditions desired for yourself and friends. The
spirits
will soon be coming daily to take the mana and to assist. But try not to
disappoint them by forgetting to leave mana and good requests for them
daily, otherwise they will soon scatter and go elsewhere. Just as a
center of good can be made in this way, a center of bad may be
established if one is not careful. The student who makes a rabbit's foot
center with the desire to get more than he gives, is guilty of breaking
the
first rule of magic-- that of being greedy and hurtful to the extent that
he
wishes to take things from others so that he may enjoy benefits. Keep
cleansed yourself. Keep your center clear of all things not fully GOOD
for everyone. You cannot steal and hold good things for long. Payment
must eventually be made. On the other hand, one can buy almost any
good thing with the coin of good thoughts accompanied by good deeds.
A "wall of protection" can be built around yourself or a loved one
in
the same way with the help of the Spirit of the Light. Put only good
into
the wall and it will allow only good to pass in and out through it... And
so
ends the lesson. Here is MAGIC for you... for the taking.

Light-Switch Huna
by Dr. E. Otha Wingo

A Simple System for Using the Huna System Without Theories, History, or Explanations of
Special Terminology.

Using Huna is Like Turning on a Light-Switch or Pushing a Button

NOTE

This method will work every time 100%, if used exactly as

described.
If the results are not as you desire, this means that some part of the
procedure has not been followed EXACTLY (i.e., one of the light
switches has not been pushed!). If this happens, then mentally CANCEL
the picture that you had previously worked out by saying aloud:

"I dissolve the mental picture and sweep away any

remnants that might have accumulated, in order to
begin again and make the picture perfect. All energy
attached to that picture is removed and the picture
now is totally dissolved and removed."

The reason for this is that a picture left with the Higher
Authorities
will continue to be worked on and some parts of it will come into
reality,
thus bringing about imperfect and often undesirable results. Cancel the
picture (blueprint) and start over, using whatever parts of the previous
plan are suitable to you and making sure that all the process is done
correctly.

Light-Switch Huna

How to Use Huna

When you want to turn on the light in a room, you reach up and flick
the switch or push the button. Immediately the light comes on and the
room is illuminated.
It is not necessary for you to understand how electricity works or
how
the building is wired or where the electrical generating plant is
located.
Even if you were an electrical engineer or physicist, you would
still
turn on the light exactly the same way!
This little article is designed to show you simply and easily
EXACTLY
how to "turn on the switch" of HUNA, so that you can get the results
you want.

Preventing Overloaded Circuits

As in all power circuits, it is a good idea to make sure that the
cir-
cuits are clear and not overloaded. In electricity we make sure the
circuit is correctly fused or with a proper breaker switch. And then we
are careful not to overload the circuit by plugging a powerful motor
into
an outlet fused for a smaller wattage. And we are also careful not to
add
too many appliances to the same circuit.
The Huna equivalent of this is FORGIVENESS. Have a little talk with
yourself. Forgive everyone for whatever has been done to you. Then
forgive yourself for anything you have done in the past, adding a
promise that you will do nothing to hurt anyone.
If you are not fully satisfied with this forgiveness session,
assign
yourself some GOOD DEED to convince yourself that you are serious
about forgiveness.

Light Switch Number One

1. Decide exactly what you want to accomplish. Be very specific. Stick
to a single request, including only the things directly involved with
that result.
2. Make a clear picture in your mind of the RESULTS you want to bring
about. Make sure to include yourself in the picture, as well as anyone
else affected by your request.
Use your imagination to create this mental image. See yourself
DOING and ACTING and THINKING the way you will when the
result has been realized. Allow all the sensations of seeing, hearing
and touch, taste and smell come fully into your imagination. Add the
strong emotion of desire.
3. Do not use negatives in any description of your request. Instead of
saying, "I want to get rid of all tensions and conflicts," say, "I see
only peace, joy, love, and harmony in all my relationships." Instead
of, "I want my illness to be healed," say, "I see myself completely
healthy, vigorous, and strong in body, mind, and spirit."
4. Be sure your request is not hurtful to anyone, including yourself.
5. When you are completely satisfied that you have prepared exactly
the picture of the results you want, mentally seal the "blueprint" or
picture, so that it will not be changed . Here is the way to do that:
"I
am completely satisfied with this mental picture of my request. I now
seal it with a protective covering so that it will stay exactly as it
is
now and cannot be accidentally changed or damaged."
6. Go to Light Switch Number Two.

Light Switch Number Two

1. Find a quiet place where you can be alone and undisturbed for a few
minutes-- 5 or 10 minutes is sufficient.
If you are at home, you may want to use a special place each day.
If there is much activity at home, use any place that provides
privacy.
In a busy office, business, or factory, you may want to take your
"break" wherever you can find a quiet spot-- in a storeroom or maybe
the washroom.
In a busy public place, slip into a washroom or even a telephone
booth. (You can become "superman" or "superwoman" by using
Huna, so why not a phone booth?)
2. Sit comfortably in your quiet place. (If it is necessary to stand, get
as
comfortable as you can by leaning against a wall or stand with feet
and heels slightly out.)
3. Take a very deep, slow breath, hold it briefly, and let it out slowly.
Say these words aloud:
"I am relaxing in my entire body, mind, and spirit. With
each breath I take, I feel more relaxed and comfortable,
and mentally alert."
4. Take another deep breath, as before, and let it out. Say, "As I take
these breaths, my energy is increasing tremendously. My body is re-
laxed and I feel good all over. My mind is clear and alert and I am
focusing only on deep breathing and increasing my energy supply."
5. Take a few more deep breaths and let your breathing become
smooth and regular, but still slower and deeper than usual. Let it be-
come natural to breathe in this way. Keep your mind only on the
thought that your energy is increasing as you breathe.
6. Say clearly aloud, "I now see a clear picture of what I desire, just
as I
have prepared it previously."
7. "I now ask my inner consciousness to send this picture to the Higher
Consciousness along with a generous supply of energy, to be brought
into reality."
8. "I give thanks that the desired future has been immediately realized
on the higher level and will come into reality on the physical level."
9. "The prayer takes its flight to the High Self. Let the higher energy
from the High Self descend upon me. Let silence prevail, as I wait
for Guidance from above."

Light Switch Number Three

1. Once you have presented your mental picture, along with a generous
supply of energy, to the Higher Authorities, the next step is to LEAVE
IT ALONE!
You must release it. It is like a seed. Once you plant the seed,
you
do not dig it up every day to see if it is growing. But you must
still
water the ground, which is the replenishing of the daily supply of
energy.
2. Every day after the first presentation, turn on the fourth switch. It
is
like the first five parts of Number Two, then continue with energizing
the "blueprint" or "seed:" every day.

Light Switch Number Four

1. Find a quiet place where you can be alone and undisturbed for a few
minutes-- 5 or 10 minutes is sufficient.
Let it
be-
come natural to breathe in this way. Keep your mind only on the
thought that your energy is increasing as you breathe.
6. Say clearly aloud, "I now send to the High Self a generous gift of
energy, to be used in bringing my request into reality on the
physical
level. Day by day, in every way, I am getting better and better."

Hints and Suggestions

1. "Huna is All Powerful in this World."
2. If you are not using Huna, you are working too hard.
3. If you are using Huna, you are still working, but you are getting
RESULTS.
4. Including help for someone else is a good aid for faster and greater
results for yourself.
5. Motto: "TO LIVE THE HURTLESS AND HELPFUL LIFE."
6. Huna means "secret," but you now know the secret of getting what
you need and desire.
7. Very strong desire for the requested results increases the energy
tre-
mendously. If you are casual and uninterested in getting the
results,
they are less likely to be realized.
8. Be careful what you ask for, you may get it. Since this method is
very effective, it is important to decide very carefully what you
want
before using it.
9. Your IMAGINATION is one of your most powerful tools.
10. Daily energizing is very important. You must use a SURCHARGE of
energy, not your normal supply of energy, to get results.
11. When doing the deep breathing for energizing it may help to do a lot
of imagining. For example, imagine that you are getting ready to run
a race. Take a stance as if you were about to start running. In this
position, energize yourself by the breathing technique and mental
suggestion.
12. If you have difficulty visualizing (making a mental picture), you
can
simply describe the desired result in words, adding as many other
sensory impressions as are natural to you and to the request. This
description can be sealed for protection, when completed, just as
the visual picture can be.
13. If you tend to prefer an auditory reinforcement of your "blueprint,"
use a tape recorder to record the description and play it back as
you energize.
14. In relationship problems it is often necessary to dissolve the inner
connections you have with another person. This may be true if there
has been a conflict or separation, when it is desirable to end the
re-
lationship. It may also be necessary in a broken relationship that
you
wish to re-establish! By "cutting the cords" that bind you together,
you get rid of disruptive conflicts, allowing the establishment of
new
and clear connections.
15. It is important to establish a friendly partnership with your inner
self
Consider your inner consciousness as a skilled worker who needs
the talents you, the conscious mind, have and has other skills and
talents that you lack. Together you make a perfect partnership.
When you then join forces with your Higher Consciousness of High
Self, you have the perfect triangle or trinity-- a team that can
accom-
plish anything you decide upon and work toward.
16. If you have any difficulty in clearing your mind of the distractions
of
daily life when you are in your quiet place, sit for a few seconds
with
your fingertips lightly touching. This will automatically balance
your
energies.
17. Praise and Thanks. Just as you would express thanks and praise to
a friend who assists you in completing a project, it is important to
speak words of praise to your inner self and your High Self for the
help they have given you.
18. Even though the Light Switch method is done in a private, quiet
place, once you have established the procedure as a habit, you can
do a quick version at any time, anywhere, just by a brief pause as
you form the picture and send it with energy to the High Self. This
is
especially useful for a picture which you have previously prepared
carefully, and also for small things that do not require extensive
pre-
paration, such as getting a parking place or finding misplaced
objects
19. You have a perfect memory! In order to have perfect recall any time
you want it, get in very friendly terms with your inner self. That
is
the part of you which has the perfect memory.

Everyday Huna
Some of the "little" things of everyday life in which Huna
techniques
can be used:

1. Finding a parking place.

2. Finding misplaced or lost objects.
3. Getting green traffic lights and smooth traffic flow as you drive.
4. Recalling things such as grocery lists and telephone numbers.
5. Using hunches to prompt you to go a different route or stop off at a
certain store where you will find what you've been looking for, what
you need, or something that interests you.
