1. 1 kg of saturated steam vapor is contained in a piston-cylinder device. While heat is

added to the steam, the piston is held stationary, and the pressure and temperature
become 300 kPa and 300°C, respectively. Additional heat is added to the steam until the
temperature rises to 650°C, and the piston moves to maintain a constant pressure.
a) Determine the initial temperature of the steam. (2 marks)
b) Calculate the total work done and total heat transferred for the overall process (kJ).
(8 marks)
2. 5 m3 of sulphur trioxide is initially at 150 °C and 60 bar undergo an isochoric heating
process to a final pressure of 70 bar. Calculated the heat transfer (kJ) for the process.
(assume ideal gas) (6 marks)
3. A 0.25 m3 cylinder consist of ethanol at 480 °C and 6000 kPa.
a) Determine the phase of ethanol at the given condition (2 marks)
b) Estimate the mass (g) of ethanol in the cylinder. (Use Pitzer Lee/Kesler correlation
for compressibility factor, Z) (12 marks)
4. For a system of Benzene (1)/ethylbenzene (2) with the assumption of Raoult’s law
validity, prepare a graph showing P vs. x1 and P vs. y1 in a single plot graph (using
Microsoft excel) with complete labels and phases for a temperature of 90 ºC
* (Note that in manual calculation, you must construct a table of x1 set with 0.2 interval,
y1 and P to prepare the graph. Also, provide a sample of calculation at x1 = 0.2)
(15 marks)
5. A mixture containing equimolar amounts of benzene(1), toluene(2) and ethylbenzene(3)
is flashed to condition 110 °C and 90 kPa. Identify the phase of the mixture. Then,
determine the equilibrium mole fractions {xi} and {yi} of the liquid and vapor phase
formed and the molar fraction V of the vapor formed. (15 marks)

6. For the following reactions; CO2(g) + 3H2(g) CH3OH(g) + H2O(g)

CO2(g) + H2(g) CO(g) + H2O(g
The initial system containing 2 mol CO 2, 5 mol H2 and 1 mol CO. Find the expression
for the mole fractions yi as function of ε1 and ε2 for the two reactions (7 marks)
7. Given the vapor-phase hydration of ethylene at 593.15 K and 1 bar as following;
C2H4(g) + H2O(g) C2H5OH(g)
a) Determine the equilibrium constant at the processing temperature (593.15K). (use K
= K0K1K2) (12 marks)
b) Determine the equilibrium constant at the processing temperature (593.15K) if it is
assume that ΔH° is constant which ΔH° = ΔH0° (8 marks)
c) If the initial system contain 1 mol each of the reactants, estimate the composition of
C2H4, H2O and C2H5OH at equilibrium using K obtained in (b). (10 marks)
d) What would be the effect of doubling the pressure at constant T on the equilibrium
conversion (εe). (3 marks)
