PROBLEM 5.

20

Calculate the ultimate axial load capacity of a rectangular column 350mm x450mm reinforced
with six 25mm bars. Use fy = 345 MPa and f’c = 28 MPa.

PROBLEM 5.21

Design a square tied column to support an axial dead load of 900 KN and an axial live load of
1240 KN. Use fy = 414 and f’c = 27.6 MPa. Assume 2% steel ratio and use 28mm main bars and
10mm ties.
PROBLEM 5.22

Reapeat Problem 5.21 using 5% steel ratio.

PROBEM 5.23

Calculate the ultimate axial load capacity of a 480-mm round spiral column reinforced with six
22mm bars. Use fy = 345 MPa and f’c = 34 MPa.
PROBLEM 5.24

Design a round spiral column to support an axial dead load of 950 KN and an axial live load of
1210 KN. Use fy = 414 MPa and f’c = 21 MPa. Assume 2% steel ratio and use 28mm main bars
and 10mm spiral. Use 30mm steel cover.

Problem 5.26

The reinforced concrete column shown in Figure 5.36 is reinforced with ten 25-mm bars with fy =
415 MPa. The ties are 12mm in diameter with fyh = 276 MPa. Concrete strength is f’c = 21 MPa.

hoop) reinforcement for seismic design for shear (a) parallel to long direction and (b) parallel to
short direction. C) Find also the maximum spacing of confinement reinforcement.

Axial loads: Shear parallel to one side:

Dead Load = 1100 KN Dead load = 120 KN

Live load = 700 KN Live load = 110 KN

Concrete strength f’c = 21 MPa. Use 25-mm-diameter longitudinal bars (fy = 415 MPa) and 12-
mm-diamter ties (fyh = 275 MPa). Clear protective covering is 35mm. Use2% steel ratio. Use
2001 NSCP.

b) Find Pn when e = 220mm
c) Find Pn when e = 550mm
d) Find Pn when the stress in tension steel is 180 MPa.
