Working of Controlling BLDC Motor Speed with RPM Display

Abstract:-
The Controlling BLDC Motor Speed With RPM Display project with an 8051 family micro-
controller controlled system to sense the RPM of the motor and control the speed of it according
to the input of the user.

The system can be powered up by a 12VAC Transformer.

A pair of IR sensors detect the RPM of the Fan (representation of BLDC Motor) which should be
placed within 1-5cm of the sensors.

When the fan is connected to the system as labelled on PCB and the sensitivty of the IR sensor is
properly adjusted through the Potentiometer, the LCD correctly displays the RPM of the fan.

Once the system starts, it does so with full RPM. After that the system continously tries to bring
the current RPM to as close as it can do towards the expected RPM.

It does so by using the PWM concept. Whenever the RPM is less than the expected RPM, the
PWM value is increased accordingly.

Similarly, the PWM value is decreased to lower the current RPM.

There is a specific way in which the input can fed to the system. Its accepts RPM value in the
format *1234#

That means one should type * on the keypad to start entering the Expected RPM value.

Following this, one should type in a four digit number of the expected RPM and following it a #
to indicate end of input.

Once this input is fed to the system, it constantly tries to approach this RPM whether lower or
higher.

Hence this system does good use of the sensor and pwm technique to acheive a desired rate of
RPM in a BLDC Motor.
