Add join (something) to something else so as to

increase the size, number, or amount.

Subtract take away (a number or amount) from another to

calculate the difference.
Difference The result of subtracting one number from
another. How much one number differs from
another

Fact family is a group of math facts using the same

numbers. In the case of addition/subtraction,
you use three numbers and get four facts. For
example, you can form a fact family using the
three numbers 10, 2, and 12: 10 + 2 = 12, 2 +
10 = 12, 12 − 10 = 2, and 12 − 2 = 10.

Students’ Prior Knowledge:

Addition and subtraction
Possible Problems and Misconceptions:

1- Confusion of addition and subtraction

2- Having problem of sharing the materials.

3- If some students misbehave during the lesson.

Solutions:

1- The student teacher will remind the students about the addition and subtraction signs.

2- The teacher will remind the students that they have to share with their team or group.

3- The teacher will remind them about the classroom rules and she will do some strategies that they know
it such as ring the bill to get their attention immediately or remind them about the class dojo points.

Lesson Schedule
Targeted teacher language:
Add, subtract, difference, fact family

Student language:
Add, subtract, difference, fact family
Engage (warm up, review prior knowledge): 5-6 minutes

The ST will review the signs to ensure that all the students can recognize the difference between
addition and subtraction signs.

The student teacher will introduce the lesson by saying “Today we are going to learn about fact
families” before she starts explaining, she’ll display a video called “fact family song” to introduce the
new fact family’s concepts in a funny way and get the students' attention rather than introducing
the lesson in the traditional bored way.

This is the link of the Fact family song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jycOWfjUOA

She will explain that the fact families are groups of three numbers that can be combined to make
four math sentences using the triangle and give different examples.
She will ask the students to choose three different numbers to make a fact family for example if they
say 2,3 and 5. She will write them in the triangle which is the family home\house. But, she will write
at top of the triangle the big number which is 5 because it’s the sum. Then, write the addition and
subtraction sentences to get four facts such as 2+3=5, 3+2=5, 5-2=3, 5-3=2.

Core (introduce and practice new concepts & procedures): 35 minutes

The student teacher will ask the students to go to their groups and open page 81 to start working to
write fact families. While that the ST will go around and observe if the students have misconceptions
or need some help.

The students will complete pages 81-83 individually depends on their level, but the ST will observe
them and give feedback about their work.

• Approaching Level Guide students through the exercises in On My Own. The ST will help them use
manipulatives while working through the exercises in page 81 and page 82.

• On Level Complete the exercises independently in page 81 and page 82.

• Beyond Level Complete the exercises independently. She will ask them to complete page 83 and
page84 which has (problem solving questions).
Close (wrap up, discussion, brief review activity or assessment): 5-6 minutes
The ST will provide small worksheet to assess the student’s understanding. She will ask them to
work individually and write the fact families.
