Lesson Plan Template 2016-2017

Introduction: “Julie is learning doing a project on the rainforest for her science class. She found out that
on an average, the rainforest gets 1/8” of rain each day. She needs to find out how much
rain the rainforest will get in a week, but how?”
*Have the students work with their assigned partner to try and figure out a way to solve
Julie’s problem. Give them a few minutes to work and then have a few sets of partners
share how they got the answer. Write every different way on the board.
*The two answers you are looking for is 1/8+1/8+1/8+1/8+1/8+1/8+1/8=7/8 OR 7 times
1/8=1/8

Daily Reviews: “Remember how we learned to multiply by repeated addition? Say 7 times 3 is 7+7+7.
We are going to be doing the same thing in order to learn how to multiply standards. I am
going to put on a quick video to refresh your memory on how to do repeated addition.”

Connecting the video of previous knowledge helps make connections from previous
knowledge (NEPF 1 Learning Purpose and Connections).
Daily Objective: “Today we will be learning how to multiply fractions by a whole number using visual
models, such as repeated addition.”

Standard: 4. NF.B.4a SWBAT Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication


to multiply a fraction by a whole number. Understand a fraction a/b as a multiple of 1/b.
For example, use a visual fraction model to represent 5/4 as the product 5 x (1/4),
recording the conclusion by the equation 5/4 = 5 x (1/4).

Concept and Skill Development and Write the problem 3/6 times 2 on the board. Ask them how they think they should solve
Application: this based on repeated addition and multiplication. Ask one or two students and then
explain to them the correct answer.
Show the problem by using 2 pie charts that are cut into 6 pieces with 3 pieces shaded.
Show them visually what would happen if they added 3 slices to another 3 slices. How
many would they get.
Then show written on the board. Make sure they are taking notes in their notebook.
“3/6 plus 3/6 would be 6/6. The denominator would stay the same like we learned when
adding and subtracting fractions a few weeks ago.” Make sure to write it all out on the
board.

Repeat this process with visual pie drawings writing it on the board while saying it out
loud. Make sure that they understand that the denominator, the bottom number, stays
the same. Have 2 or 3 more problems until they seem to grasp the concept. Ask if they
have any questions then move onto more practice problems (listed below).
Guided/Independent/Group Using clicker devices to all vote on a set of questions. Have students get into their table
Practice: groups, but every student should have their own clicker. Put up each question 1 by 1,
there should be 5. Let them work for a minute or so on each question together and then
have them all vote what the answer is. Having them work together involves collaboration
with each other (NEPF 3 Engagement).

Homework Assignments: Have them do this worksheet for homework (listed below) 6 problems of their choice.
Then they will do a webquest which reviews adding, subtracting, and multiplying
fractions. They will have a week to complete the assignment. The worksheet and
webquest will show me how well they are doing in the subject when they turn in both
assignments (NEPF 5 Assessment Integrated Instruction).

Closure: *Write 1/8 times 3 on the board along with 1/8+1/8+1/8

“So today we learned how to multiply fractions using repeated addition. Remember is 1/8
times 3 is 3/8, then 1/8 plus 1/8 plus 1/8 also equals 3/8. You can show it either way.
Whichever way is easiest for you. Hopefully the more you practice, the more you are able
to not use the repeated addition method.”

Long-Term Memory Review: Using a math game every few days for a few minutes to review problems and make sure
it is still sticking in their heads. They can always do these flash cards at home on
mathgames.com to help them study at home.
