(min.)

*Anticipatory Set

what presidents they can remember and who Abraham Lincoln was? What is
he known for? And continue with any thoughts or ideas they have about him.

*State the Objectives (grade-level terms)

Abraham Lincoln.

lives of other Americans.

*Instructional Input or Procedure

1. Ask students what they know about President’s Day, Abraham Lincoln,
and George Washington. Allow students to share what they would do
if they were President and ask what they think the President does.
2. Introduce the book I Am Abraham Lincoln. Go over inferencing,
summarizing, beginning, middle and end. Talk about type of book i.e.
fiction, set purpose and tone for reading and incorporate questions and
context clues in the story.
3. Shared reading of I Am Abraham Lincoln.
4. Ask students to converse with their buddy about the story and what
happened using beginning, middle and end.
5. Talk to students about Abraham Lincoln’s honesty and how he took
responsibility for his actions and worked hard. Play a game of Simon
Says with a reward and ask the students why they should follow the
rules of the game. Ask them how they would feel if someone cheated
to win the game.
6. Students will work as hard as Abraham Lincoln did on summarizing
worksheet at their table groups making sure to spell sight words
correctly, use correct punctuation and edit their work before having it
checked.
7. Students will work together in their table groups to complete the
President’s Day packet being sure to remember Abraham Lincoln’s
values for taking responsibility for his or her own actions.
8. Go over packet to ensure the students filled in the correct answers and
ask for class participation.

worksheet and then write on large tablet paper about the key aspects on the
worksheet and provide examples to help with the process and understanding.

and assessing their ideas that they are filling out.

*Guided Practice
Teacher to walk the room to answer any questions while working on the
worksheet.

*Independent Practice
The students working on their summarizing work sheet will be independent
work. They need to understand how to formulate their own thoughts and
ideas into sentences with the words they know and sounding out the ones
they aren’t sure of.
Assessment
The teacher will formatively assess students as they are working on their
worksheet and during the small group and whole group discussions.

*Closure

the students filled in the correct answers and ask for class participation in
reviewing this material. End by asking the students if they have any questions
about either of these men or President's Day in general.

Differentiation Strategies (enrichment, accommodations, remediation, or by learning style).

Differentiation will take place based upon the formative assessment. Differentiation is also provided within
the activities: Movement and Hands-on for Kinesthetic Learners, Videos for Visual Learners, Communication
for Auditory Learners; and Reading and Writing activities for the Reading/Writing Learners

Classroom Management Issues (optional)

- Keeping the students on task during simon says.
- Music on low in the background during group work to control noise levels.

Lesson Critique. To be completed following the lesson. Did your students meet the objective(s)?
What part of the lesson would you change? Why?

The students met the objectives and went beyond what I had hoped. They were
engaged and enjoyed the book and game and knew a lot about the Presidents already. I
would change the booklet to be done in partners instead of as table groups. They
seemed to have a challenging time focusing with four people trying to give answers and
they didn’t get as far in the book as I had hoped.
