INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
Read all the instructions given prior carry out this task. Students can refer to the rubrics attached to
prepare this task according to specification provided. These assignments are assessed upon:
CO1 Apply knowledge of soil engineering concepts response to various geotechnical situations.
(C3)(5%)
CO2 Design solution for soil engineering problem with the design system component of processes
to meet specified need with appropriate consideration for safety environmental
consideration. (C5) 5%
Detail site exploration and sampling is required prior construction works is executed.
The soil samples are very crucial in designing and evaluating the suitability of a site. As
geotechnical engineer, you and your team members have been appointed to plan and
decide activities that shall be done during subsurface exploration of an embarkment
road of 1 km long stretch and probable width is 8 m. Figure 1 below shows the plan
view of the road embarkment.
In a detail report, present locations of each site exploration method done for the 1 km
embarkment road and at least a sample of borehole log is presented together with the
data interpretation. (CO1PO1)

As conjunction with the task in Assignment 1, you and your team are required to come
out with a detail design of lateral earth pressure for a cross section of both sides of the
road embankment, in which the platform level is different as shown in Figure 2.
Each are 4 m width and 2 m clear distance for embedded wall. Also in design, you need
to include condition as follow:
a) An assumed external surcharge that is contributed from traffic load is exerted on top
of both bounds and to be considered in the design, this area is prone to flash flood.
b) Include Factor of Safety (FOS) due to bearing capacity of the site as potential
foundation for road embarkment. All parameters for design as according to borehole
log at depth 0 m to 3 m. Cohesion value is negligible as the backfilled is compacted
fill and having unit weight of 19 kN/m3. The friction angle is taken according to
Meyerhoff,1956.
