2. Write ‘R’ for each argument showing a refutation and ‘C’ for each item showing a
concession.
A. Some students photocopy chapters from books that are required for their
course. They believe that they are justified because textbooks are so expensive.
Not only is this illegal, but it also shows a lack of intellectual integrity.

B. Manufacturer often justify copying famous designer articles such as handbags


and jewellery because they can sell these items far below the cost of the
original. Many consumers cannot see any difference, and they benefit from
paying lower prices. If consumers benefit, this practice should not be illegal.

C. Musical performers often use copyrighted songs for their shows. They
complain about having to pay royalties and fees to the copyright owners. Since
musicals are performed in front of small audiences and the performers do not
make much money, it seems unfair for them for them to pay high fees just to
sing a song. _________

D. Some producers have taken other peoples’ story lines for movies and adapted
them for their own films. They argue that their version is significantly different
from the idea first presented to them. However, this practice is unethical and
dishonest; the original creator should be compensated. _________

E. Robert’s brother Jerry helped Robert write a college term paper for few years
ago. Now Jerry feels that he has the right to submit the same term paper for
his college course. Even though Jerry helped write Robert’s report, Jerry is not
the original author. He should not assume that he can get credit for writing the
paper. _________

F. A pastry chef working in a cupcake bakery learned new recipes from the café’s
head baker. When the pastry chef opened his own cupcake shop in another
neighbourhood, he insisted on using the same recipes he had used at his
previous job. He was wrong to take recipes created by another baker and use
them in his new business. _________

A. Some Web developers believe that it is okay to use images they found on the
Internet to make their own webpages more attractive.
