purpose: This unit standard is for people who are employed by the NZ
Police and who are, or seek to be, employed in the role of
police forensic photographers.

People credited with this unit standard are able to: provide
police forensic photography services; meet national and
district requirements for the provision of forensic
photographic services; and manage human resources,
including self, in the delivery of photographic services to
police.

entry information: Open.

accreditation option: Evaluation of documentation and visit by NZQA and industry.

moderation option: A centrally established and directed national moderation


system has been set up by the Public Sector Training
Organisation.

special notes: 1 All work practices shall meet the documented


operational and performance requirements of the New
Zealand Police. This includes reference to Police
General Instructions, Police Manual of Best Practice,
and the Detective Training Notes on Crime Scene
Examination and Investigation, and their subsequent
amendments.

2 Legislation applying to this unit standard includes the


Police Act 1958 and the Health and Safety in
Employment Act 1992.

3 Definitions
The prisoner image capture (PIMS) is the process for
photographing and storing the images of people
arrested by the NZ Police.
SOCO is the Scene of crime officer. The person who is
responsible for attending the crime scene for the
purpose of fingerprinting and forensic examination.
CIB - Criminal Investigation Branch;
ESR - Environmental Science and Research Ltd;
PCA - Police Complaints Authority;
Intel - Police Intelligence Section.

Provide police forensic photography services.

1.1 Strategies for delivering quality investigative support to the district are identified.

Range: equipment, maintenance, reporting, procedures, acquisition,


research and development, training, work ethic.

1.2 The requirements of a customer-driven service are demonstrated in the context


of the NZ Police.

Range: pathologists, SOCOs, Fingerprints, ESR, Fire Service, Coroner,


defence counsel, Crown Law Office and Crown Soliciter, Internal
Affairs, Intel, CIB, uniform branch, traffic safety.

1.3 Office practices meet police operational procedures.

Range: recording, job book, evidence register.

1.4 An understanding of local and national contracts is demonstrated.

Range: timeframe, film and equipment supply, film processing.
