Cells Intro

Science - Pre teach

Two types of cells
● Cells are the basic unit of life and these microscopic structures work
together and perform all the necessary functions to keep an animal alive.
● There is an enormous range of animal cells. Each is adapted to a perform
specific functions, such as…
○ carrying oxygen,
○ contracting muscles,
○ secreting mucus,
○ protecting organs.
General Structure
Animal cells have a number of organelles and structures that perform specific
functions for the cell.

An animal cell is defined as a cell which has a nucleus and organelles bounded
by a very flexible membrane. This flexible membrane is what has allowed
animals (including humans) to advance and diversify so much throughout the
years.

Main Components of A Cell

● Nucleus
● Nucleolus
● Mitochondria
● Ribosomes
● Rough endoplasmic reticulum
● Smooth endoplasmic reticulum

Nucleus

● Central part of the cell

● Stores the cell's hereditary material or DNA
● Coordinates the cell's activities, which include growth, intermediary
metabolism, protein synthesis, and reproduction (cell division)

is its function?

Nucleolus

● Small dense spherical structure in the nucleus of a cell during interphase

● Rewrites ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and combines it with proteins

is its function?

Mitochondria

● Performs cellular respiration

○ Takes in nutrients from the cell, breaks it down, and turns it into energy
○ this energy is then in turn used by the cell to carry out various functions
● Powerhouse of the cell!

Ribosomes

● Makes protein to repair damage

● Ribosomes can be found floating within the cytoplasm or attached to the
endoplasmic reticulum
○ Proteins are an essential part of all cells

Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum

● An organelle found in both animal cells and plant cells

● Makes cellular products like hormones and lipids

is its function?

Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum

● Found throughout the cell but the density is higher near the nucleus and
the Golgi apparatus
● Ribosomes on the rough endoplasmic reticulum are called 'membrane
bound'
○ Responsible for the assembly of many proteins. This process is called translation.
