Catalog Description:
Principles of Law, Public Safety, Corrections and Security introduces students to professions in law
enforcement, security, corrections and fire and emergency management services. Students will examine the roles
and responsibilities of police, courts, corrections and private security.
Law Enforcement Two provides the knowledge and skills necessary to prepare for a career in law
enforcement. This course includes the ethical and legal responsibilities, operations of police and emergency
telecommunication equipment, and courtroom testimony.
Criminal Investigations introduces students to the profession of criminal investigations. students will
understand basic functions of criminal investigations and procedures and will learn how to investigate or follow up
during investigations. Students will learn terminology and investigative procedures related to criminal investigation,
crime scene processing, evidence collection, fingerprinting, and courtroom presentation. Through case studies and
simulated crime scenes, students will collect and analyze evidence such as fingerprint analysis, bodily fluids, haris,
fibers, shoe and tire impressions, bite marks, drugs, tool marks, firearms and ammunition, blood splatter, digital
evidence and other types of evidence.
Attendance Requirements:
TEC Section 25.092 states that to receive credit in a class, a student must attend at least 90 percent of the days the
class is offered. A student who attends fewer than 90 percent of the days the class is offered may be referred to the
attendance review committee to determine whether the absences can be excused or how the student can regain
credit. (See Student Parent Handbook for more details)
Statement on Plagiarism and Academic Dishonesty: Offering another person's work as one's own without proper
acknowledgment is plagiarism. Any student, who fails to give credit for quotes or nearly identical material taken
from books, encyclopedias, magazines, and other reference works or from the themes, reports or other writings of a
fellow student, is guilty of plagiarism. The attempt of students to present work not honestly performed by them is
regarded as a serious offense which may subject the offender to a grading penalty and/or disciplinary action.
Daily access to computer, internet, e-mail and use Microsoft Word (doc) word processing software for all
assignments. All communications and assignments are to be done online via the online course and/or e-mail.
A. Reading Assignments: Reading assignments are to be completed on time (i.e., by the Wednesday of the week
they are scheduled for discussion). You should be prepared to participate in discussions about the assigned reading.
B. Discussion Boards: There will be a discussion topic each week of class posted in the Google classroom, each
student is to respond and post their opinion in the Google classroom.
C. Quizzes: Each week you will have a 10-question quiz. Quizzes are over the material from the reading that
week. Questions consist of multiple choice, true/false, fill in the blank and essay format.
D. Course Exams: You will have a Unit exam, Midterm Exam and Final exam. Questions may consist of multiple
choice, true/false, matching, fill in the blank, essay and short answer.
E. Projects: Students will be required to write a paper in APD Format (to be learned in the classroom). The topic
of the paper will be given in each 9-week period. The text of the paper must be a minimum of 2 pages (Maximum
of five pages). Papers must be submitted in APA and Legal Citation format (to be explained during the course).
Plagiarism shall result in disciplinary action. Late papers will receive lower grades unless the instructor determines
that there is a satisfactory reason for the late receipt.
Course Grading:
The primary purpose of grading is to measure understanding and knowledge of content
The Criminal Justice Program welcomes the opportunity for your child to participate in our
program.
To expose the students to real-life career experiences in the criminal justice system, the use of
video in the format of video clips and/or full-length documentary video, role playing and guest speakers
are utilized.
Your student may view actual crime scene photos and videos that may contain autopsies and other
human remains or violation of the law. Students will study crimes such as murder, sexual offenses,
robbery, assault, abuse, prostitution, pornography, arson, terrorism, burglary, substance abuse, and other
offenses. Some of the videos used as teaching and or training tools/aids are First 48, Crime 360, Active
Shooter, Green River Killer, Ted Bundy etc. During these experiences, the students may be exposed to
graphic information, pictures and/or language.
Every effort will be made to keep this exposure to a reasonable minimum but it is very difficult to
eliminate completely. If you do not want your child to be exposed to this type of information, pictures,
and/or language, a relative assignment will be given.

LABORATORY/HANDS ON SAFETY RULES
Additionally, Safety will be conducted by modifying the hands on lessons in an attempt to keep
from injuries occurring. For example, foot pursuit; rather than having a student chase another student, the
exercise will be modified for one student to run thru a flat obstacle (traffic cone course) course and at the
end be able to identify and “arrest” the “suspect” (Student role players)
As well as the demonstration of pressure points, this will be demonstrated, but not practiced at full
or real speed. This is a training environment and the number one goal is to have no injuries.
By signing, you understand that horseplay will result in after school detention with the instructor
and assigned a writing assignment about your actions and how you should conduct yourself in the future.
You may be required to write from the student handbook, the policy of that which you did not follow.
