Teacher: Miss Seppala Cycles Portion of Ivan Project

Lesson: 6

Desired Results (what will students learn?)

How do our value towards ourselves, others, and animals affect our quality of life?
Essential
Topic E: Animal Life Cycles
Question(s)
SLO 6: Demonstrate awareness that animals require different habitats in order to meet their basic needs of food,
water, shelter and space.
Learning
Outcome(s) Social Studies 3.1.2: What determines quality of life?

Students will be able to:

Lesson
1. Summarize what kind of habitat gorillas need to meet their basic needs.
Objective(s) 2. Identify what habitat makes a good quality of life for a gorilla.

Assessment Evidence (how will you determine student learning?)

Summative Formative  Observations during research
 N/A for this lesson
Assessment Assessment  Verbal questions and responses

Learning Experiences/Opportunities (what will students do to learn it?)

 Computer cart
 Laptop  Visual Journal
Ed Resources
 Smart Board  Pencils
Tech  to Prepare  Art supplies (fabric, colored paper, glue,
markers, other 3D objects, etc.)
Time Allotment Content/Description Notes
Introduction/Attention Grabber:
 Specific steps to promote relevance with students
 We have talked a lot in class about quality of life and what makes a positive
quality of life. Can someone give me an example of something that positively
impacts our quality of life? Think back to when we wrote down on those
graphic organizers a few weeks ago.
 We have also spent some time learning about animals’ habitats and the
different habitats that animals need in order to meet their basic needs.
 Today we are going to merge these two things together, quality of life and
10:15am
proper habitats for animals, specifically gorillas.  Ideal: a perfect situation.
5 minutes
 We are going to do some research on gorilla habitats and use our knowledge
about Ivan’s quality of life to create an ideal habitat for Ivan, the gorilla.
 Define ideal on the board.
 We will be creating an “ideal habitat” for Ivan, the gorilla using various art
supplies, I want you guys to create a 3D model of this habitat.
 Think about what Ivan likes, needs, and would enjoy in his ideal habitat.
Transition
 Technology helper will help hand out appropriate number of laptops to table
groups.
Activity #1: Hand out Laptops
10:20am
Teacher Prompts/Cues/Explanations
5 minutes
 Have technology helper hand out laptops.

Lesson: 6

Have students working in table groups, 1-2 laptops/group. 1 if working in

groups of 2-3 and 2 if working in groups of 4.
Students will be working in table groups, so not every student needs own
computer. Have one student in each group log on to the computer.
Google Chrome>Pebble Go>Login In>Animals>Mammals>Primates>Gorillas
Write steps on the board.
Student Actions
 Working in table groups, grab one laptop.
 Have one group member log in.
Google Chrome>Pebble Go>Login n>Animals>Mammals>Primates>Gorillas Resources needed: visual journals,
 Wait for further instructions. laptop cart, red journals or cards
Guiding/Prompting Questions with login info.
 Has everyone logged onto the computer?
 Open up Google Chrome and go to Pebble Go.
 Raise your hand if you need help!
Performance Indicators
 Students are following instructions.
 Students are waiting patiently for next steps.
Transition Cues
 Have distributer and helper hand out visual journals.
Activity #1: Research Ideal Gorilla Habitats
Teacher Prompts/Cues/Explanations
 Hand out visual journals.
Students will research about gorillas, paying specific attention to their
habitat. Students will write down important facts about gorillas and their
habitat in their visual journal.
Students will be sharing a laptop but must write in their own visual journal
their findings. This is because the habitats will be done individually.
Students will also take notes about Ivan. (what they know about him, what Topic E: Animal Life Cycles
does he like, what does he eat, his quality of life, etc.) SLO 6: Demonstrate awareness
Student Actions that animals require different
 Work collaboratively with others. habitats in order to meet their
basic needs of food, water, shelter
 Login to laptop and go to Pebble Go.
10:25am and space.
 Research gorilla habitats.
20 minutes
 Write down information about Ivan’s quality of life.
Social Studies 3.1.2: What
Guiding/Prompting Questions
determines quality of life?
 What makes an ideal habitat?
 What food does a gorilla eat? Resources needed: laptop cart,
 What makes a good quality of life for a gorilla? Specifically, Ivan? visual journals, pencils.
Check for Understanding/Performance Indicators
 Students are working well with others.
 Students are on task researching gorilla habitats.
 Students are writing down important info about gorillas to help with their
ideal habitat for Ivan.
Transition Cues
 Finish writing your last thought and let’s begin to put away our visual
journals and our laptops.
Activity #3: Clean up and Wrap up.
Teacher Prompts/Cues/Explanations
10:45am  Students are writing down important info about gorillas to help with their
5 minutes ideal habitat for Ivan.
Student Actions
 Logging off of laptop and put it away properly.

 Log off your laptop.
 Can my technology helper please help put away the laptop cart?
 Come have a seat on the carpet when you are done!
 Performance Indicators
 Students are putting away materials properly.
Lesson Closure/Cliffhanger:
 After lunch we are going to use our research about gorilla habitats to begin
planning Ivan’s Ideal Habitat.
 I want you to think about what materials you will want to use to create a 3D
version of his habitat.
 You may bring resources/materials from home.
 We will continue with this project for a few lessons, so do not rush! Take
your time while creating the ideal habitat for Ivan.
