• TriStation 1131 Developer’s Workbench is a software application for

developing, testing, and documenting safety_critical and Process
control applications for Tricon and Trident.

61131-3 standard.

The Workbench also provides the Cause and Effect

Programming Language Editor (CEMPLE) to support the
use of Cause and Effect Matrix methodology

 Diagnostic Monitor:

Diagnostic Panel monitor, displays overall hardware configuration (including

chassis or baseplates, main processors, communication modules, and I/O
modules) and provides access to diagnostic status or troubleshooting
suggestions, also it can be used without running the full TriStation software
suite.

TriStation 1131 Workbench is tested thoroughly together

with the functionality of the programming languages
included in the IEC 6-1311-3 and Triconex Libraries.

The Workbench is equipped with download facilities that

have been certified by TÜV to meet the requirements of
safety related communications allowing DOWNLOAD ALL
and DOWNLOAD CHANGES to the application program.

TÜV certification ensures the functionality of systems for

critical process applications requiring maximum safety and
uninterrupted operation. Therefore it is appropriate for use
in processes requiring Functional Safety Category SIL 1 to
SIL 3 according to the IEC 61508 standard.

Why the IEC 61131-3 was developed?

• During Last 15 Years a different Programming Techniques used for

the Control Applications and PLCs (BASIC, PASCAL, C,….).

• The only Problem that can be mentioned for all these Languages is
that they are all different.

• For the People involved with such Systems ( Technicians,

Operators, System Designers and Plant Managers) and this results in
inefficient use of Money, Time and Human Resources in Training the
Stuff in so many different Applications.

• So International Electro-Technical Commission (IEC) was set up IN

1992 to look at the complete Design of the PLCs, including the
Hardware Design, Installation, Testing, Documentation, Programming
and Communications with the Help of The International
Standardization Organization (ISO).

The major new features offered by IEC 61131-3:

1- The IEC 61131-3 standard allows a program to be broken down

into functional elements that are referred to as program
organization units or POUs. POUs include functions, function
blocks and programs also allow the different data types to be
accessed easily between the different types of POUs .

2- There is full support for describing sequences so that complex

sequences can be easily broken down using a graphical language
called Sequential Function Chart. This allows a sequence to be
described in terms of steps, their actions and transitions
between steps.

 The major new features offered by IEC 61131-3:

3- The standard provides flexible language selection, i.e. a set of

two textual languages :
IL ( INSTRUCTION LIST)
ST ( STRUCTURE TEXT)
and three graphical languages:
LD ( LADDER DIAGRAM)
FBD ( FUNCTION BLOCK DIAGRAM)
SFC ( SEQUENTIAL FLOW CHARTS)
for expressing different parts of a control application. The
system designer is free to choose the language that is most
suitable to solve a part of an application program. Different
parts of a program can be expressed in any of the languages.
