Time Frame:
3-4 days of ELA block (2 hours daily)

Publish their creation using a traditional or digital tool.

Materials:

For students- pencils, rough draft paper, student computers/devices or

paper for publishing, art supplies (if choosing to publish their folktale on
paper), access to the internet/WIFI, revising and editing checklist, folktale
project success criteria

For teacher- projector, computer, flip chart or PowerPoint presentation

narrative creation

Background for Teachers:

Teachers need to be familiar with different folktales from other cultures,
understand the elements of a folktale, be acquainted with the narrative writing
process, basic understanding of computer programs/tools if they have access to
this technology

Student Prior Knowledge:

Students must have: an understanding of what a folktale is, how the moral is
conveyed through key details, exposure to a variety of folktales from around the
globe, and an understanding of story elements. If using a device/computer, basic
digital literacy skills are needed.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Objectives:
Students will strengthen their writing by revising and editing their folktales with
guidance and support from peers and adults.

Students will publish their own folktale using any traditional or digital tool of
their choosing.

Instructional Procedures

1. By this point, the students have drafted well-written fables and folktales.
Before getting ready to publish, students should work with a partner to
complete the revising and editing checklist to make sure they have
included all parts needed. This is their final chance to fix their work before
publishing and sharing with their global buddy. The teacher will model
revising the draft of their folktale, so students have a clear understanding
of what it means to revise someone’s work. The students will be required
to follow the PQP model, giving praise (something they did well),
something they could improve upon, and a question they may have about a
part of their writing.
2. Students will begin publishing their folktales using the medium of their
choice. This will look different for each student, depending on how they
choose to publish their work. Teachers should make sure ample art
supplies are available for students who choose to go the traditional
publishing route. For students choosing to go the digital publishing route,
the teacher should make sure there are tools and programs students are
familiar with that they can use, such as Wixie, PowerPoint, Microsoft
Word, or Publisher.
a. Students can use the folktale success criteria to make sure their
project has all of the parts.
b. By the end of this lesson, students should have a published folktale
ready to share with their global buddy.
