2 Introduction
This document has been created to correct misunderstandings made by some of our
Muslim colleagues. This document is divided into two main parts. The first part provides
a summary of the ways in which the Sikh way of life has a more logical and ethical
approach than mainstream Islamic practices.

The second part which provides rebuttals to incorrect or false statements made by
Muslim scholars on the following Islamic website. In all instances the blue text
highlights extracts taken from Islamic websites.

http://www.sikh-converts-islam.tk/

The major themes which Muslims have questioned and attempted to criticize include:
• The lives of the Sikh Gurus (mainly Guru Nanak Dev Ji)
• Gender equality as enshrined within Sikhism
• Rules or Laws within the Sikh way of life
• The contents of the Sikh holy scripture

Sikhism respects all religions and supports the concept of "Sarbat da Bhalla" which
means "Good for All". Sikhs do not have any ill will towards any community, as all
human beings are sons and daughters of one God.

“See the brotherhood of all mankind as the highest order of Yogis; conquer your own
mind, and conquer the world.” (Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Page 6)

4 Sikh-converts-Islam website: Mission statement

“This site has been created in response to Sikh extremists who have been propagating
there ideology, using various methods to deceive people. We challenge Sikhs to examine
there faith and look at the ideological differences between Islam & Sikhism before
making their minds up with the lies that these fascist Sikhs have made up.”

4.1 SikhingTruth response:

Okay cool lets have a look at the challenges :o)

5 Sikh-converts-Islam website wrote: Sikhism teaches to

“On the other hand Sikhs teachings tell Sikhs to take over the world and rape women all
over it. As stated here in the Sikh holy book:”

Page 26, line 16 (Guru Granth Sahib) the sikh holy book.
"You may enjoy the pleasures of hundreds of thousands of women, and rule the nine
continents of the world."

5.1 SikhingTruth response:

First let us have a look at the full stanza of the Holy Scripture to understand the context
of the single sentence:

“People wear all sorts of costumes and wander all around, but in their hearts and minds,
they practice deception. They do not attain the Mansion of the Lord's Presence, and after
death, they sink into manure. ||1|| O mind, remain detached in the midst of your
household. Practicing truth, self-discipline and good deeds, the Gurmukh is enlightened.
||1||Pause|| Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the mind is conquered, and one
attains the State of Liberation in one's own home. So meditate on the Name of the Lord;
join and merge with the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation. ||2|| You may enjoy the
pleasures of hundreds of thousands of women, and rule the nine continents of the
world. But without the True Guru, you will not find peace; you will be reincarnated over
and over again. ||3|| those who wear the Necklace of the Lord around their necks, and
focus their consciousness on the Guru's Feet wealth and supernatural spiritual powers
follow them, but they do not care for such things at all. ||4|| whatever pleases God's Will
comes to pass. Nothing else can be done. Servant Nanak lives by chanting the Naam. O
Lord, please give it to me, in Your Natural Way. ||5||2||35||”

The Guru Granth Sahib is not asking a Sikh to rape or take over the world like the way
Muslims try to convert Dar al-Harb (territory of war and chaos) to Dar al-Islam either
through warfare or da’wah. The Guru Granth Sahib is simply saying that even if you
were lucky enough to rule the nine continents of the world and enjoy sensual pleasures
with hundreds of thousands of women you would still not have the privilege of God
consciousness (Naam) without the grace of the Guru. Simple.

Homosexuality is punishable in many ways, but in Sikhism its allowed”

Guru Granth Sahib:

“The body-village is filled to overflowing with anger and sexual desire; these were
broken into bits when I met with the Holy Saint.” Page 13, line 8

reincarnation over and over again.” Page 50, line 7

“Homosexuality in Sikhism with young boys???”

Guru Granth Sahib:

“This boy has ruined our weaving business. Why didn't he simply die?” Page 856, Line 6

“Where is your seat? Where do you live, boy? Where did you come from, and where are
you going?” Page 938, Line 9

6.1 SikhingTruth response:

The SikhingTruth team finds it truly amazing at how only Muslims have the supreme
capability to either not understand or twist Sikh teachings. Regarding homosexuality
there is a continuing debate about whether homosexuality is allowed or not. However the
SikhingTruth team does believe that homosexuality is simply a natural state of being for
an individual and is completely acceptable within the Sikh way of life. i.e. you can be a
practicing Sikh and be homosexual at the same time.

The Sikh scripture is completely silent about homosexuality and the reason is because
sexual orientation plays no part in a person’s spiritual development.

With regards to the quotes from the Guru Granth Sahib made by our Muslim colleagues
we will comment on the obvious meaning of these below:

“The body-village is filled to overflowing with anger and sexual desire; these were
broken into bits when I met with the Holy Saint.” Page 13, line 8

• Page 13 line 8 is simply highlighting the saving grace of a saint and how the power of
the holy congregation can be used a s a tool to overcome lust in addition to anger,
greed, attachment and pride (known as the 5 thieves). There is no reference to
homosexuality here although the line is applicable to both heterosexual and
homosexual people.

“Engrossed in the intoxication of sexual desire and anger, people wander through
reincarnation over and over again.” Page 50, line 7

www.SikhingTruth.com

• Page 50 line 7 is just stating the power of lust and the fact that it keeps us bound to
the earthly plane. Again there is no reference to homosexuality here although the line
is applicable to both heterosexual and homosexual people.

• Our Muslim colleague is now attempting to link the 3rd and 4th quotes which they
have taken from the Sikh holy scripture with homosexuality and young boys aka
pedophilia. This is probably in reaction to the frequent comments made about Prophet
Mohammad having consummated his marriage with a 9 year old girl (Aiesha) when
he was 50+ which we shall examine in the next section. The full shabad (stanza) has
been given below:

“Every day, he rises early, and brings a fresh clay pot; he passes his life embellishing
and glazing it. He does not think at all of worldly weaving; he is absorbed in the subtle
essence of the Lord, Har, Har. ||1|| Who in our family has ever chanted the Name of the
Lord? Ever since this worthless son of mine began chanting with his mala, we have had
no peace at all! ||1||Pause|| Listen, O my sisters-in-law, a wondrous thing has happened!
This boy has ruined our weaving business. Why didn't he simply die? ||2|| O mother, the
One Lord, the Lord and Master, is the source of all peace. The Guru has blessed me with
His Name. He preserved the honor of Prahlaad, and destroyed Harnaakhash with his
nails. ||3|| I have renounced the gods and ancestors of my house, for the Word of the
Guru's Shabad. Says Kabeer, God is the Destroyer of all sins; He is the Saving Grace of
His Saints. ||4||4||”

The above stanza is written by Saint Kabeer Ji who was raised a Muslim but later rejected
Islam and became a God conscious spiritual being with no religion (Sikh). His family
was simple cotton weavers and they were not pleased with his becoming a saint who
ruined the family business by giving up the family trade. But Kabeer Ji finishes the
sentence stanza by saying that “God is the saving grace of his saints”.

• The final quotation from the Holy Scripture cited by our Muslim colleagues is from
the famous Sidh Gohst or conversations with the Siddas who were considered the
accomplished spiritual masters of their time. When Guru Nanak Dev Ji was a young
man he met these old accomplished masters and they addressed him as boy. There is
no child sex scandal taking place as implied by our Muslim colleagues. Please see a
fuller extract below:

“The Siddhas formed an assembly; sitting in their Yogic postures, they shouted, "Salute
this gathering of Saints". I offer my salutation to the One who is true, infinite and
incomparably beautiful. I cut off my head, and offer it to Him; I dedicate my body and
mind to Him". O Nanak, meeting with the Saints, Truth is obtained, and one is
spontaneously blessed with distinction. ||1|| What is the use of wandering around? Purity
comes only through Truth. Without the True Word of the Shabad, no one finds liberation.
||1||Pause|| Who are you? What is your name? What is your way? What is your goal? We
pray that you will answer us truthfully; we are a sacrifice to the humble Saints. Where is

your seat? Where do you live, boy? Where did you come from, and where are you going?
Tell us, Nanak - the detached Siddhas wait to hear your reply. What is your path?" ||2||”

7 Sikh-converts-Islam website wrote: Sikh Terrorism?

“Sikh terrorism is sponsored by expatriate and Indian Sikh groups who want to carve out
an independent Sikh state called Khalistan (Land of the Pure) from Indian territory. Sikh
violence outside India, which surged following the Indian Army's 1984 assault on the
Golden Temple, Sikhism's holiest shrine, has decreased significantly since mid-1992,
although Sikh militant cells are active internationally and extremists gather funds from
overseas Sikh communities. Active groups include Babbar Khalsa, Azad Khalistan
Babbar Khalsa Force, Khalistan Liberation Front, Khalistan Commando Force, and
Khalistan National Army.[1996 ed. omits Khalistan National Army.] Many of these
groups operate under umbrella organizations, the most significant of which is the Second
Panthic committee.”

7.1 SikhingTruth response:

Khalistan has nothing to do with Islam or Sikhism. In fact Pakistan (land of Muslims) has
helped Indian Sikhs supporting Khalistan to train them in fire arms and providing shelter
to them outside of India. The case for an independent homeland for the Sikh community
is likened to Israel which was formed to provide a permanent home for the Jewish people.

The Sikh community contributed more for the independence of India than both Muslims
and Hindus combined and yet Sikhs only formed 2.5% of the Indian population. Original
promises to the Sikh community included:

Original Promises:
• The Congress, in its annual session at Lahore, in 1929, passed a resolution, which
said that "No such constitution would be promulgated in the country that would not
satisfy the minorities including Sikhs”

• In July, 1946, Jawaharlal Nehru declared at a press conference on the eve of the All
India Congress Committee meeting at Calcutta that "the brave Sikhs of Punjab are
entitled to special consideration. I see nothing wrong in an area and a set-up in the
north wherein the Sikhs can also experience the glow of freedom."

Contributions of Sikhs to a FREE India:

• As early as 1872, some Namdhari Sikhs started opposing the British government
regarding some of their policies resulting in 65 of them being blown apart by canons.

• During 1912-16 the freedom struggle got considerable momentum by the arrival of
Ghadaries by the Kama Gata Maru and other ships. Most of them were Sikhs who
died cheerfully on the gallows for the love of their country

www.SikhingTruth.com

• During the Martial Law Regime in 1919 the Sikhs raised a bold and open revolt
against the British. Majority of the persons massacered at Jallianwala were also the
Sikhs.

• The I.N.A. also was founded by a Sikh General called Mohan Singh and more than
60% of the 20,000 people who joined the I.N.A. were Sikhs. The rebel units raised in
Germany, Japan and Italy were also formed by the Sikhs and their heroic role in
history forms the proud part of their story.

• The Marine Revolt at Bombay and the Signal Regimental mutiny at Jubblepur were
also engineered by the Sikhs.

• During 1942-43 when indiscriminate arrests were made during the course of Quit
India Movement, the Sikhs contributed 70% out of the total Punjabis though their
population in Punjab was only 13%

• Finally out of the 4771 people who gave their died for Indian Independence a total of
3697 of these were Sikhs even though they only constituted 1.5% of the total Indian
population.

So after so much sacrifice and pain to free mother India would it not be reasonable for
Sikhs to expect to enjoy the glow of freedom in free India and for our Indian forefathers
to keep their promises made to Sikhs before Indian independence?

Well it seems not! The failed promises include:

• When Nehru was reminded about the promises he and Gandhi made to the Sikhs
before Independence and all the broken promises since, he stated simple:

"the circumstances have now changed."

"Kya main taqat dushman ke hath main de dun (How can I entrust power into the hands
of the enemies)." (Jawaharlal Nehru, 1961)

"The Sikhs are lawless people and a menace to the law abiding Hindus... The
Government should take strict measures against them." (Jawaharlal Nehru)

• In 1950, despite protests by Sikhs, the Indian constitution was adopted, which failed
to even recognize the Sikhs as a separate religion or "quam," instead Sikhs were
categorised as Hindus, and remained defined as such under Article 25 of the
Constitution. The British recognised Sikh marriages under the Anand Karaj Act 1909.
However this was replaced by the Hindu Marriage Act 1951. Sikh marriages are no
longer recognised. To get a marriage license in "secular India", Sikhs have to sign a
form entitled "The Hindu Marriage Act of 1951". Sikh representatives in the
Constituent Assembly refused to sign the new Constitution.

www.SikhingTruth.com

• In a circular sent to all Deputy Commissioners in Punjab by the Home Minister

Vallabhi Patel, there were instructions that Sikhs should be treated like a "criminal
tribe." They were urged to be severe so that the Sikhs should wake up to the political
realities and recognize "who are the masters and who are the slaves."

• In 1956 all 14 states in India were recognized on linguistic and cultural basis,
however Panjab was the only state in India left out of this. In addition huge anti-Sikh
propaganda compelled virtually all Punjabi speaking Hindus to deny Punjabi as their
language and claim allegiance to Hindi!

• Restrictions on the recruitment and promotion of Sikhs in the armed forces were
applied. This was a grave insult as Sikhs being 2% of India's population counted for
the majority of sacrifices in the freedom struggle against the British.

• In 1966 the Panjabi Suba Movement began, during peaceful agitations throughout the
50's and 60's over 250,000 Sikhs demonstrated peacefully and courted arrest to get
their linguistic rights (this is 5times the number of Indians arrested by the British in
the whole "Quit India Movement"). Darshan Singh Peruman was martyred whilst on
hunger strike in prison. He demanded that Sikhs should be given more rights and
more autonomy for Punjab. His martyrdom and noble sacrifice was ignored by the
Government.

• Two majority Punjabi speaking districts were left out of the 1961 census. The now
already shrunken Punjab was further halved to form a Hindi speaking state Haryana
in 1966. Furthermore, the small remnant of Punjab was still denied the status of a
Punjabi speaking state. Some of the prosperous Punjabi speaking areas including the
capital Chandigarh were left out and given to Haryana. This was a direct violation of
the Indian Constitution and pre-independence promises.

• Punjabi Suba was formed in 1966 AFTER a hard and protracted struggle put up by
the Akali Dal in which about 60,000 people had to court arrest.

• Punjab remains the only state in India to have a shared capital and no control over its
natural resources, water and electricity.

www.SikhingTruth.com

• Beautiful Punjab was cut in 3 with central government keeping a tight grip on power
and irrigation even though these are state subjects

• In 1982, the Akali Dal decided to launch the Dharam Yudh Morcha a fight for
righteousness and justice. The basic issues of the Morcha were related to the
prevention of the digging of the unconstitutional SYL (Satluj Yamuna Link) canal,
redrawing at Punjab's boundaries, restoration of Chandigarh to Punjab, retuning of
center - state relations and greater autonomy far the State as ensured in the Anadpur
Sahih Resolution. As many as twenty six rounds of negotiations were held between
the Akali Dal and the government. But the Government failed to arrive at a negotiated
settlement.

The continued economic and political manipulation of the Sikh community combined
with an unwanted distribution of Punjab’s resources led to a rise in militancy in Punjab
which involved a minority of Sikhs demanding a separate homeland.

Following this surge in militancy, the Indian army attacked the holiest Sikh shrine on a
holy day to flush out the “terrorists” and attacked another 40+ Sikh temples killing
thousands of civilians in the process.

Following this Indra Ghandi (the then Prime minister) was shot dead by her own Sikh
body guards and this led to Sikhs being killed openly in Delhi by state sponsored gangs
who murdered, raped and plundered Sikh property.

Sikhs around the world were naturally angered as any Muslim would be if Mecca was
attacked or a Christian if the Vatican was attacked.

The final piece of the drama was the Air India Plane bombing in 1985 apparently done by
people supporting Khalistan. However, no Sikhs have ever supported the killing of
innocent civilians for any purpose and indeed it is still unclear who was responsible for
the Air India bombing. It was the Consul General of India in Canada who was first
quoted as saying that Sikhs who support Khalistan , the independent Sikh homeland, are
terrorists. But the movement for Sikh independence is led by the Council of Khalistan ,
which is committed to achieving an independent Khalistan by peaceful, democratic,
nonviolent means. The book Soft Target, which is the definitive account of the Air India
case, quotes a Canadian Security Investigative Service investigator as saying, "If you
really want to clear the incidents quickly, take vans down to the Indian High Commission
and the consulates in Toronto and Vancouver, load up everybody and take them down for
questioning. We know it and they know it that they are involved.'' And the acquittal of
the Sikhs accused just provides further substantiation of India's guilt.

Well so much for trying to show that Sikhs are a terrorist group trying to take over the
world with their way of life!

Sikhs unlike Muslims and Islam do not believe that the west is an evil place full of
sinners who must be taught a lesson like 9-11 or 7-7. Sikhism teaches the principles of

www.SikhingTruth.com

freedom of religion, democracy, hard work, compassion, humility, mastery of self and
selfless service to humanity. In Sikhism it is only acceptable to use physical force when
all other means of exhausting an injustice have failed. This philosophy led to 80% of the
people who died for the independence of India coming from Sikh families and also a
similar percentage of people who joined the British Indian army in World War 1 and
Word War 2 and gave their lives for world freedom.

8.1 SikhingTruth response:

Most of these people have accepted Islam because they have not heard of Sikhism or its
amazing philosophy. Also these videos do not in themselves prove that Islam is in some
way superior to Christianity or Sikhism. All these videos demonstrate is that people were
looking for a change in their lives. Indeed Christians could find just as many Muslims
who have left Islam.

However in Islam the penalty for turning away from the religion is death and so many
people are forced to remain Muslims for fear of their lives:

9 Sikh-converts-Islam website wrote: Equality in Sikhism

Khalsa is the baptizing of Sikhs, who take an Oath to promote and preserve the five Ks of
Sikhism. These Sikhs are to be considered to hold a higher status over that of ordinary
persons, and thereby this exposes a hierarchical system that Bijla Singh denied existed.
Quotations regarding this brotherhood include :-

www.SikhingTruth.com

“he who recognises the One God and no pilgrimages, alms-giving, non-destruction of
life, penances, or austerities; and in whose heart the light of the Perfect One shines, - he
is to be recognised as a pure member of the Khalsa”

Thereby, if we are to believe this Guru, and by proxy the beliefs of Sikhism itself, then
God, through the Gurus, considered those persons inferior whom :-

• Engage in Pilgrimages
• Fasts
• Worships Idols

Are thereby considered inferior in Gods eyes (according to the Gurus) . This is of course
a far cry from Bijla Singhs cry of tolerance, harmony and equality regardless of religion.

9.1 SikhingTruth response:

Our Muslims brothers here are confusing the idea of equality with the idea of becoming a
member of the Khalsa. A Khalsa indeed is a beautiful human being who practices a
spiritual lifestyle as per above. But being a member of the Khalsa does not make a Sikh
higher than anyone else. This idea that a spiritual or religious person will regard
themselves as higher and or superior than everyone else is peculiar to Islamic thought and
is an extension of ego.

As always the Guru Granth Sahib must be used to validate any point relating to Sikhism
and so we provide the following quotes highlighting the fact that a Gurmukh (one whose
face is towards the Guru) and who lives like a Khalsa becomes the dust of the feet of the
saints (humble) and will never consider himself or herself superior to anyone else.

“One who calls himself good - goodness shall not draw near him. One whose mind is the
dust of all - says Nanak, his reputation is spotlessly pure. ||3||” page 278

“When You (God) come to mind, You are always merciful to me; what can the poor
people do to me? Tell me, who should I call good or bad, since all beings are Yours?
||1||Pause|| You are my Shelter, You are my Support; giving me Your hand, You protect
me.” Page 383

“Amongst all is the Light-You are that Light. By this Illumination, that Light is radiant
within all. Through the Guru's Teachings, the Light shines forth.” Page 13

“One who sees that Light within each and every heart understands the Essence of the
Guru's Teachings. ||4||” page 20

“Following the Guru's Teachings, the humble servants are carried across; they become
the slaves of the Lord's slaves.” Page 166

“Among all persons, the supreme person is the one who gives up his egotistical pride in
the Company of the Holy. One who sees himself as lowly, shall be accounted as the
highest of all.” Page 266

10 Sikh-converts-Islam website wrote: Homosexuality

and Sikhism
Bijla Singh would have us believe that Sikhism is open to all, and God will accept all,
including homosexuals. However, this is proven a fallacy by the actions of the World Sikh
Group, the Akal Takht, who state regarding homosexuality : "The advice given by the
highest Sikh temporal authority to every Sikh is saying that it is unnatural and ungodly,
and the Sikh religion cannot support it."

Conclusion regarding Sikh “Equality” within point 1

Bijla Singh would have us believe Sikhism is Inclusive and non-judgmental, though it is
clear this is a fabrication. Like any other religion, it promises a reward or spiritual
attainment and fulfillment for those that adhere to it, and promises castigation and
punishment for those that do not. In this respect, Sikhism is exactly the same as any other
way of life, be this Christianity, Hinduism, Islam or any other.

10.1 SikhingTruth response:

There is no doubt that there is a divergent opinion among Sikhs regarding homosexuality,
but we are here to present an opinion based on Sikh scripture and Sikh philosophy. This
is not the same as an old man making an opinion from the Akal Thakat. Sikhism does not
recognize a priestly class and so any Sikh is free to argue a point for or against
homosexuality using the Guru Granth Sahib as the eternal teacher. So far no Sikh has
been able to challenge the following arguments for allowing homosexual Sikhs to
practice the Sikh lifestyle.

10.1.1 Homosexuality is not mentioned in Sikh scriptures

There is nothing in Sikhism (Guru Granth Sahib) which prohibits homosexuality or
considers homosexuality to be wrong or sinful. If sexual orientation was important for
spiritual evolution of the soul then it would have been mentioned in either the Guru
Granth Sahib, Dasam Granth, Hukamnamas from the Gurus or the Rehat Maryada.
However none of these authentic sources of Sikh wisdom and lifestyle mention
homosexuality.

10.1.2 The example of the 9th Sikh Guru

The first important lesson from the life of the Sikh Gurus is that all view points and
lifestyles of all human beings should be respected even if we ourselves do not believe or
practice them. This was shown in practice when the 9th Sikh master gave his life to
uphold the right of Hindus to practice their religion freely. At the time they were being
forcefully converted to Islam.

10.1.3 Marriage defined between soul and not physical form

Some Sikhs suggest that marriage in Sikhism is defined only between a male and a
female. However this is a wholly incorrect interpretation because the 4 meditations
performed during the Sikh marriage ceremony simply highlight the process of the
individual soul merging with the supreme soul. So the recital of the 4 meditations during
the marriage is the Guru merging the 2 souls and making them one. The soul has the
same attributes as God and includes no form, no shape and no colour. The Guru Granth
Sahib says:

“He has no form, no color and no features; through the True Word of the Shabad, He
reveals Himself. ||Pause|| He has no mother, father, sons or relatives; He is free of sexual
desire; He has no wife. He has no ancestry; He is immaculate. He is infinite and endless;
O Lord, Your Light is pervading all. ||2||” page 597

So the question that we must ask now is:

“would there be any difference in a man and man having their souls joined when
compared with a man and a woman having their souls joined?”

The answer must by definition be a No because God is genderless and soul and supreme
soul are made of the same stuff and have exactly the same characteristics.

Finally someone may have been a female in their previous life and currently be a man in
their current life. But irrelevant of their physical form their atma (soul) is constant and
unchanging and in this life it doesn’t matter if their merger is made physically with a
male or female because the soul is
genderless.

10.1.4 Ik Ong Kar - Oneness

Sikhism teaches that everything is Ek Ong Kar and that there is no other. All the creation
is beautiful and holy just as God has made it. So there is no suggestion that God creates
something bad. It is useful to note here that most homosexuals do believe that God has
made them the way they are.

“He Himself created all women and men; the Lord Himself plays every play. You created
the entire creation; O Nanak, it is the best of the best. ||2||” (Guru Granth Sahib page
304)

“There is no other than the Lord. Don't dispute this, and don't doubt this. The Lord says,
‘This creation and I are one and the same’. ||2||” (Guru Granth Sahib page 693)

Further information regarding this topic can be obtained from the article titled Sikhism,
Yoga and Sexuality.

11 Sikh-converts-Islam website wrote: Many Paths to

God?
However, what we must establish is which way is right, and which way is wrong? There
cannot be “many ways to God”, when each teaching contradicts. For example:-

“Guru Gobind Singh enjoined on the Khalsa Panth not to take kosher meat i.e. Halal
meat slaughtered and prepared for eating according to the Islamic practice. In fact it is
one of the kraits for every amritdhari Sikh. One who infringes it becomes an apostate”

This is of course in complete contrast to the Islamic position, based on the Holy Qu’ran,
which states:-

He has only forbidden you dead meat, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and any (food)
over which the name of other than Allah has been invoked. But if one is forced by
necessity, without willful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits, then Allah is Oft-
Forgiving, Most Merciful"

Both are diametrically and intrinsically opposed to one other, so how can both be
correct? Therefore, to say that Sikhism has no issues with any other religious beliefs or
that there are “many ways to God” is completely incorrect and a misrepresentation of
what Sikhs believe.

11.1 SikhingTruth response:

Sikhism is not a religion like Islam but it is instead a spiritual lifestyle which provides
some basic spiritual keys necessary for anyone following any religion to attain salvation.
It is possible to gain enlightenment as a Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist but only if the key
ingredient of compassion is incorporated into your spiritual practice together with
humility and effort.

“The mythical bull is Dharma, the son of compassion” page 3

So it is not incorrect to say that Sikhs believe that there are many ways to God. However,
there are key spiritual tools which any member of any religion will need in order to bring
them to Godhead.

As far as the beliefs of other religions are concerned, Sikhs are happy for other people to
follow their beliefs (assuming they are peaceful beliefs) but the Gurus have provided an
up-to-date spiritual lifestyle which includes vegetarianism, no smoking, Raaj Yoga, early
morning meditation, earning an honest living, giving one tenth of time and money to
charity, practicing equality and recognizing the divine light in all etc.

12 Sikh-converts-Islam website wrote: Divorce in Sikhism

Sikhism still does not give the right of divorce to its adherents except in extreme
circumstances, and even then since it is not legislated within Sikhism this is decided by
Western or Hindu Courts.
This is mentioned in many sources, and some quotes from Sikhs are as follows :-

“In the case of broken marriage, divorce is not possible according to the Sikh religious
tradition. The couple can, however, obtain a divorce under the Civil law of the land.”

Of more concern is how Sikhs refuse to even consider divorce, leaving the spouse trapped
in a loveless marriage. Take this example from the Sikh Spectrum Magazine :-

When two souls become one, there is no duality between the way a husband and a wife
think. Whatever they do, they do it together. A divorce, in such a case, is inconceivable.

12.1 SikhingTruth response:

Sikhism has never considered marriage to be a contract which you can just break and
create as you like because this opens the doors wide open for abuse. Marriage is Sikhism
is a spiritual union of the souls but that union can only happen if the married couple work
on their relationship and become one light in two bodies.

“They alone are called husband and wife, who have one light in two bodies.” Page 788

Sikhs who are not happy in their relationship and who are not able to make the
relationship work will often divorce. This is not considered a great deed but it is better
than staying in a harmful relationship.

Islam unfortunately does not offer good solutions to marriage:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-
dyn/content/article/2007/05/07/AR2007050701936.html
copied below:

One was a shy, slender young woman who spoke no English when she was brought
from Pakistan to enter an arranged marriage with a stranger in Virginia. The other
was a self-confident professional, born in Turkey but raised in the United States, who
thought she knew what she was doing when she married an educated Muslim man in
Maryland.

Yet both women fell under the sway of the same powerful pressures that sometimes
reach around the globe to keep Muslim wives in the Washington region imprisoned in
abusive marriages, unable to fight the gossip and shame that come with defying their
culture and religion, isolated from help that is just a three-digit phone number away.

www.SikhingTruth.com

"My husband beat. He show knife. I am scared for him, for all family," said Shamim,
21, the Pakistani bride, who was rescued by police. She is being sheltered and tutored
in English at a private home. "They say no money, no call mother at home. I cook for
all, I not eat. I not know 911 what is. I think I go crazy."

Shireen, the woman in Maryland, speaks with articulate chagrin about how the
crushing weight of social expectation kept her in a relationship that soon turned
violent. Both women's last names are being withheld at their request.

"I was perfectly happy living alone, but the family kept pushing me to marry. I
wanted to show them I was a good Muslim girl," said Shireen, now 37 and divorced.
When her husband became abusive, she said, relatives told her to be a better wife.
When she took him to court, she said, "everyone abandoned me. I was the one who
had done something wrong."

Domestic abuse is hardly unique to Muslim immigrant communities; it is a sad fact of

life in families of all backgrounds and origins. Yet, according to social workers,
Islamic clerics and women's advocates, women from Muslim-majority cultures face
extra pressure to submit to violent husbands and intense social ostracism if they
muster the courage to file charges or flee.

A major obstacle to recognizing and fighting abuse, experts said, can be Islam itself.
The religion prizes female modesty and fidelity while allowing men to divorce at will
and have several wives at once. Many Muslims also believe that men have the right to
beat their wives. An often-quoted verse in the Koran says a husband may chastise a
disobedient wife, but the phrasing in Arabic is open to several interpretations.

"Many batterers manipulate Islamic law or use its perceived authority to control their
wives. A man who has the power to divorce can really twist the knife," said Mazna
Hussain, an attorney for abused women at the Tahirih Justice Center in Falls Church.
"Muslim women want to be faithful to their religion, and the idea that you cannot
disobey the word of God is very compelling, even if you are in an abusive
relationship."

Mosques are a central focus of community life for Muslim immigrants, and the
influence of their male clerics is enormous. Only a handful of these imams have
spoken out on the problem of abuse, a source of shame and denial among their flocks.

In Sterling, Imam Mohamed Magid at the All Dulles Area Muslim Society offers
counseling to engaged couples, ensuring they understand their mutual rights and
duties. In Silver Spring, Imam Faizul Khan at the Islamic Society of the Washington
Area holds weekly counseling sessions for troubled couples.

"For many years, our community did not face these issues. Women suffered in silence
and fear. Even today, many imams think it could never happen in their mosque," Khan
said. "Islam gives equal rights to men and women, but there are myths in Muslim
society that men are superior and violence is permitted. This is wrong, and it needs
to be said."

www.SikhingTruth.com

Khan and others are also trying to bring men into the debate by forming a group
called Muslim Men Against Domestic Violence. But they said recruiting participants is
not easy. Even when taken to court on charges of abuse, several experts said, many
Muslim men will argue that they were within their rights or are being victimized by
vindictive spouses.

Another powerful barrier to change can be the grip of Muslim culture, with its gossip
among extended families and its tradition of arranged marriages, in which brides
often are sent to live with their in-laws. Immigrant brides are frequently cut off from
their families and isolated in new households, where they occupy the lowest social
rung and might be forced to act as servants.

Social workers and government officials said there are numerous programs in the area
to help Muslim women who are abused, such as hotlines with links to Arabic and Urdu
speakers and shelters that serve meat slaughtered according to Islamic ritual. But if a
young woman is brought to the United States, speaking no English and surrounded by
in-laws, she might be as far from help as if she were living in a Pakistani or Moroccan
village.

"Many women are kept inside, with no one to turn to," said Catherine Juhel, a
counselor at the Foundation for Appropriate and Immediate Temporary Help (FAITH),
an assistance program for Muslim women in Herndon. "They don't know the language
or the laws here, only what their husband tells them. Often they come from a society
where if you go to the police, they will bring you right back home. How can they be
sure it would be any different here?"

A cudgel often wielded by abusive Muslim husbands in the United States is their
power over the legal immigration status of their wives. Many brides arrive with
temporary "marriage" visas obtained through husbands who are U.S. residents or
citizens. Lawyers and social workers say an angry or demanding husband might
threaten to "call immigration" and have the wife deported, raising the horrifying
specter of her returning home in shame.

Many imported Muslim wives do not know that there are U.S. laws allowing them to
seek residency alone if they can prove they have been abused by their spouses.
Several legal-aid organizations in the region handle these petitions free of charge,
and they help women seek protective orders and child custody.

A closely related problem is nervousness about the prospect of leaving home. In many
Muslim societies, women are protected and housed by their fathers and then by their
husbands; if they date or live alone, they risk being tarred as prostitutes. To seek
shelter from strangers in an alien country might seem a worse fate than enduring
abuse in familiar surroundings.

"Sometimes women do not want to go to shelters. Even if the man is beating her and
the children, she may feel it is their Islamic duty to remain home and respect him,"
said Ambreen Ahmad, director of FAITH. "We try to show them that in Islam, their
rights are protected and their duty is only to God. When they finally understand, they
are so relieved they cry and cry. It is like breaking shackles."

www.SikhingTruth.com

In the case of Shamim, it took a series of contacts with sympathetic relatives and
women's rights activists for her to summon the nerve to call 911. When she finally
did, the police came in a patrol car, helped her pack while her husband and in-laws
watched in astonishment, and escorted her to a friend's home.

"Now I am freedom," Shamim said, grinning broadly as she took a tea break recently
from her English studies. "I stay America. Not go home. In home, everyone blame
woman, it is my culture. Everyone blame me."

Yet even U.S.-educated women can be browbeaten into enduring abuse for fear of
shaming their families or facing cruel gossip at the mosque. Organizations that help
them escape are viewed by some conservative Muslims here as dangerous saboteurs of
Muslim values and family.

In Shireen's case, even a college degree and a good job could not fend off the
demands of family and community bent on fitting her into a traditional Muslim mold.
Now that she finally has freed herself from an unhappy match, she said, she has
become a pariah to the family that once hovered around her.

"I know I was stupid to give in, but you get overwhelmed by all the pressure," she said.
"Now I have been totally shunned. I embarrassed my husband in the eyes of the
community. It doesn't matter why I left him or what he did to me. Even in America,
you can't always get away from home."

God
For Sikhs to state that God is “all pervading and is in all directions. God is omniscient,
omnipotent and loves all”, what does that mean? When they say God is pervading, Do
they mean God is in impure things, such as excreta? Do they mean that God is in an
Adulterer, or a Murderer? When they say God loves everyone, do they mean Non-Sikhs
as well?

Sikhs also believe that God takes the form of a man in their scriptures, but how can this
be? How can the Creator limit himself to a creation, and then serve the creation? For
example :-

“God himself took the form of Sain and served the king in such a way that the king was
overjoyed.”

13.1 SikhingTruth response:

Some great questions from our Muslim colleagues. We will provide summary answers to
the questions to keep the discussion succinct.

God is all pervading in all directions. This means that God exists within everything
including the good, the bad and the ugly.

www.SikhingTruth.com

“in His Own creation, He Himself is pervading” page 281

“Through all eyes, He Himself is watching. All the creation is His Body. He Himself
listens to His Own Praise. The One has created the drama of coming and going.” Page
294

“The creation is born of the Light, and the Light is in the creation.” page 325

“He who created the creation is True, and He shall always be True; He shall not depart,
even when the creation departs. He created the world of Maya with its various colors and
species. Having created the creation, He Himself watches over it, as it pleases His
Greatness. Whatever pleases Him, that is what He does. No one can issue any commands
to Him. He is the King, the King of Kings, the Emperor of Kings! Nanak lives in
surrender to His Will. ||1||1||” Page 347

The reason why people do bad things is because they are not aware of the light of God
within their heart and so they act without the inner wisdom and guidance.

The spirit of God is in everything. It is like protons, neutrons and electrons. These basic
constituents of matter are neither good nor bad. They just are. In the same way excrement
is a waste material for a human but it is food for a plant. The idea that excrement is
unclean at a non-physical level does not exist in Sikhism because Sikhism recognizes that
life flows in cycles of creation, sustenance and destruction. So following on with this idea
the latent spirit of God is in everything including in those things that Muslims would
class as “bad” such as excrement.

“You created the entire creation; O Nanak, it is the best of the best. ||2||” page 305

“Perfect is the Creation of the Perfect Lord Master.” Page 376

“He Himself created Himself; He Himself assumed His Name. Secondly, He fashioned
the creation; seated within the creation, He beholds it with delight. You Yourself are the
Giver and the Creator; by Your Pleasure, You bestow Your Mercy. You are the Knower
of all; You give life, and take it away again with a word.” Page 463

As God is in everything he is also in a Murderer, an Adulterer, a homosexual etc. But in

the first two cases the people are overwhelmed by one or more of the 5 thieves (lust,
anger, greed, attachment and pride) and so the awareness of God within does not arise
and people are swayed by their own limited minds and desires and end up creating bad
karma.

“God Himself is everything; those who are in their ego cannot even speak of this.
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, He is realized, and the pain of egotism is
eradicated from within.” Page 35

www.SikhingTruth.com

“The entire Universe is the form of the One Lord. He Himself is the trade, and He
Himself is the trader. ||1||How rare is that one who is blessed with such spiritual wisdom.
Wherever I go, there I see Him. ||1||Pause||He manifests many forms, while still
unmanifest and absolute, and yet He has One Form. He Himself is the water, and He
Himself is the waves. ||2||He Himself is the temple, and He Himself is selfless service. He
Himself is the worshipper, and He Himself is the idol. ||3||He Himself is the Yoga; He
Himself is the Way. Nanak's God is forever liberated. ||4||1||6||” page 803

Thirdly when Sikhs say that God loves everyone, Sikhs imply the entire creation
including the plants, animals, humans, the demi gods, angels, beings on other planets etc.

“Having created the creation, He watches over it. By His Glance of Grace, He bestows
happiness.” Page 8

Everything in existence is an extension of God. So it is perfectly possible for a human

being to be born with complete God consciousness. These human beings are called
Avtaars and an example would be Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Singh claims that Sikhs follow no fasting or pilgrimages. This is completely untrue. Sikhs
celebrate “Hola Mohalla”, which involves military exercises, mock battles, and a festival

In addition to this, Sikhs are expected to visit the “Golden Temple”, in Amritsar. It is
described as “a living symbol of the spiritual and historical traditions of the Sikhs. It is a
source of inspiration for all Sikhs and their chief place of pilgrimage.”

14.1 SikhingTruth response:

Hola Moholla is neither fasting nor a pilgrimage it is as you suggested large scale martial
arts training sessions.

Sikhs are not expected to visit the Golden Temple but most Sikhs will visit this most
special place because of its link with the Great Gurus. However the belief that by going
to some place such as Mecca or Hardwar will erase our sins and make us good people
does not exist. Sikhism stresses the inward transformation as the true pilgrimage.

“The merits of pilgrimages, fasts and hundreds of thousands of techniques of austere self-
discipline are found in the dust of the feet of the Holy.” Page 48

15 Sikh-converts-Islam website wrote: What does Sikhism

say for the following?
Singh clearly believes Sikhism is a way of life, and Islam is somehow secular in its
approach. Nothing could be further from the truth. To Singh, I ask him the following
questions :-

A. How much tax should I pay in a Sikh State, as a Non-Sikh?

B. What is the ruling in Sikhism regarding testimony in a court?
C. What is the ruling in Sikhism regarding the sentence for stealing?
D. What is the ruling in Sikhism regarding the age of maturity?
E. What is the ruling in Sikhism regarding my relations with my neighbour?
F. What is the ruling in Sikhism regarding how I should treat an animal?
G. What is the ruling in Sikhism regarding lawful earnings?
H. What is the ruling in Sikhism regarding killing a non-Sikh and the punishment for
that?
I. What is the ruling in Sikhism regarding riding a horse?
J. What is the ruling in Sikhism if I use a nuclear weapon?

I would imagine that Singh is unable to answer these questions, because Sikhism is
unable to answer the majority of these questions. Sikhism covers prayer and religious
obligations. It has no understanding of how to interact with the real world. It has no
detailed economic system, social system, or ruling system.

Sikhism is not alone in this. There is no belief in the entire world, except Islam, that has
the answers to problems that mankind encounter on a day to day basis. In Islam, the
Qu’ranic verses on Society outnumber verses on individual worship many times over. In
the hadith books, only 3 or 4 chapters relate to ibadaat ( individual worship ), whilst over
100 chapters in Bukhari relate to muamalaat ( societal transactions).

Islam contains a complete ruling, economic, social and ritual system, applicable to all
times and places because it is from the Creator, Allah (SWT), your God and my God.

15.1 SikhingTruth response:

Sikhs use the following tools to make decisions:
• Guru Granth Sahib
• Hukamnamas (written edicts of the Guru separate to the Guru Granth Sahib)
• Dasam Granth (works of the 10 Master)
• Connection with God
• Common sense
• Science
• Logic
• Laws drafted for the country

The above tools are enough to provide answers to any situation in life. Sikhs do not
require anything else.

The great aspect of Sikhism is that it is not limited to outdated economic, political or
social structures as detailed in the Koran or the Hadiths. If the Islamic economic,
political, social and religious systems were so great then why is it that most Muslims in
most Muslim countries live in poverty with low access to education, wealth and basic
facilities?

We like to give a full rebuttal so just for fun we will answer each of the questions from A
through to H using a very special tool not available to 99.9% of Muslims called common
sense :o)

A. How much tax should I pay in a Sikh State, as a Non-Sikh?

SikhingTruth Answer: Sikhs would not set a different tax rate for Sikhs and non-Sikhs
(unlike Muslims). The same rules would apply whatever they may be.

B. What is the ruling in Sikhism regarding testimony in a court?

SikhingTruth Answer: Depends on the country. But if it was a Sikh state one thing they
would not have is the testimony of 2 women = the testimony of 1 man as per Islamic
legal procedures. People would need to look at evidence and ask the person under trial a
serious of questions to determine if their testimony is plausible. Again as mentioned
earlier it is commonsense stuff.

C. What is the ruling in Sikhism regarding the sentence for stealing?

SikhingTruth Answer: This would depend on the seriousness of the theft. For example a
court based on Sikh principles would look at a child stealing to feed himself or his family
differently to someone who made an armed raid on a bank. This is again is contrast to
Islamic law which would result in the person having their hands cut off without
consideration to the conditions or background regarding the theft.

D. What is the ruling in Sikhism regarding the age of maturity?

SikhingTruth Answer: The age of maturity is determined by emotional, physical and by
virtue of maturity of character.

www.SikhingTruth.com

The Rehat Maryaya says:

Chapter XI - Anand Sanskar (Sikh Matrimonial Conventions and Ceremony) Article
XVIII
(a) A Sikh man and woman should enter wedlock without giving thought to the
prospective spouse’s caste and descent.
(b) A Sikh’s daughter must be married to a Sikh.
(c) A Sikh’s marriage should be solemnized by Anand marriage rites.
(d) Child marriage is taboo for Sikhs.
(e) When a girl becomes marriageable, physically, emotionally and by virtue of maturity
of character, a suitable Sikh match should be found and she be married to him by Anand
marriage rites.

Again this is different to Islam’s idea of maturity which in a girl for example is
considered the onset of her periods. This is ridiculous became the onset of periods only
identifies the start of puberty and in no way indicates emotional, physical or maturity of
character.

E. What is the ruling in Sikhism regarding my relations with my neighbour?

SikhingTruth Answer: Sikhs in India have always considered their neighbours to be
extensions of their own family. Although it would be more correct to say that Sikhism
regards the whole of humanity as one family.

F. What is the ruling in Sikhism regarding how I should treat an animal?

SikhingTruth Answer: The Guru Granth Sahib says:
“Be kind to all beings - this is more meritorious than bathing at the sixty-eight sacred
shrines of pilgrimage and the giving of charity.” Page 136

G. What is the ruling in Sikhism regarding lawful earnings?

SikhingTruth Answer: Earning an honest living and sharing a part of our earning with the
needy are the important aspects to prosperity consciousness.

“O Nanak, in the world hereafter, that alone is received, which one gives to the needy
from his own earnings and labor. ||1||” page 472

Other things such as income rate, national insurance, corporation tax can vary on the
country, location of the company etc.

H. What is the ruling in Sikhism regarding killing a non-Sikh and the punishment for
that?
SikhingTruth Answer: It has already been mentioned that Sikhism does not for example
divide the world into Dar al-harb and Dar-al-islam. Any ruling applicable to a Sikh would
also be applicable to a non-Sikh. Depending on the circumstances surrounding the killing,
a combination of jail and community service would most likely be suitable punishments.
Also the duration of the sentence would again vary on a case by case basis.

I. What is the ruling in Sikhism regarding riding a horse?

www.SikhingTruth.com

SikhingTruth Answer: All beings are to be treated with kindness so apart from this there
are no specific rulings with regards to riding a horse (obviously!).

J. What is the ruling in Sikhism if I use a nuclear weapon?

SikhingTruth Answer: Nuclear warfare is not necessarily encouraged because of its
lasting negative impact on the environment and also the potential unavoidable killing of
civilians if it is released over a city. Weapons should only be used as a last resort when
all other means of injustice have failed as per Guru Gobind Singh’s recommendations.
