You have recently attended a seminar about how tourism can be made more environmentally friendly. You made the
following notes while at the seminar:
Ways to make tourism more environmentally Some opinions expressed in the discussion:
friendly ‘That’s a great way to learn about the place you’re
Supporting conservation projects visiting.’
Limiting the number of visitors to some sites ‘I’d hate to arrive somewhere and find I couldn’t
Using vehicles run on renewable energy get in!’
‘Who is going to pay for the new vehicles?’
Write an essay discussing two of the ways tourism could be made more environmentally friendly. You should explain
which you think will be more effective, giving reasons to support your opinion.
You may, if you wish, make use of the opinions expressed in the discussion, but you should use your own words as
far as possible.
Write your essay in 220–260 words in an appropriate style.

MODEL
2 Read the essay. Match the four paragraphs with a
description (a–f) from Exercise 1.
1
Human society is having an increasing effect on our environment, particularly through our desire to travel to other
places. It is important to consider the consequences of this, and how to reduce the negative effects tourism can have.
2
A good way of encouraging tourists to find out about the culture of the places they’re visiting would be to help them
participate in local conservation projects.
If they understand the impact their actions have on the environment, visitors may be more likely to look after it, for
example, by recycling more or not leaving rubbish behind. Tourists may also reduce their carbon footprint by choosing to
holiday closer to home or travelling by bus or train rather than by plane.
3
One area where tourism has a particularly big impact is the amount of people who visit sensitive sites like Machu Picchu
in Peru. The authorities introduced a licence system to limit the number of people walking the Inca Trail each day and
give the area time to recover. Although it can be disappointing for tourists who have not planned ahead, it is an important
method of controlling our impact on these important places and preserving them for future generations. It may also
encourage tourists to find out more about their destination before they travel.
4
Taking all of these points into consideration, I feel the best way to make tourism more sustainable, and reduce our
impact, would be to limit the number of visitors who can go to each place. This will show them that we cannot travel
without considering the consequences.
