Solve the Following Problems
1. What is a work element? (2 Points)
2. What are some of the functions included within the scope of work
management? (2 Points)
3. There are 15 forging presses in the forge shop of a small company. The shop
produces batches of forgings requiring a setup time of 3.0 hours for each
production batch. Average standard time for each part in a batch is 45
seconds, and there are an average of 650 parts in a batch. The plant
workforce consists of two workers per press, two foremen, plus three
clerical support staff.
(a) Determine how many forged parts can be produced in 1 month, if there are
8 hours worked per day and an average of 21 days per month at one shift
per day. (4 Points)
(b) What is the labor productivity ratio of the forge shop, expressed as parts
per worker-hour? (2 Points)

6. The normal time to perform a certain manual work cycle is 3.47 min. In
addition, an irregular work element whose normal time is 3.70 min must be
performed every 10 cycles. One work unit is produced each cycle. The PFD
allowance factor is 15%. Determine
(a) the standard time per piece and (2 Points)
(b) how many work units are produced during an 8-hour shift at 100%
performance, and the worker works exactly 7.018 hr, which corresponds
to the 15% allowance factor. (2 Points)
(c) If the worker’s pace is 125% and he works 7.2 hours during the regular
shift, how many units are produced? (2 Points)

1. Answer: A work element is defined as a series of work activities that


are logically grouped together because they have a unified function in
the task.
2. Answer: The functions of work management include
(1) Organizing the workers to perform the specialized tasks that constitute the
workload in each department,
(2) Motivating the workers to perform the tasks,
(3) Evaluating the jobs in the organization so that each worker is paid an
appropriate wage or salary commensurate with the type of work
performed,
(4) Appraising the performance of workers to reward better-performing
workers appropriately, and
(5) Compensating the workers using a rational payment system for the work
they perform.
3. Solution: (a) Time to produce a batch = TB
TB = 3.0(60) + (45/60)(600) = 180 + 450 = 630 min = 10.5 hr
Hours/month = 8(21) = 168 hr/mo
Rp = 168/10.5 = 16 batches/mo per press
With 20 presses, Rp = 20(16) = 320 batches/mo
With Q = 600 pc/batch, Rp = 320(600) = 192,000 pc/mo
(b) Total labor hours during month = 8(21)(2 x 20 + 2 + 3) = 168(45) = 7560
hr/mo
LPR = 192,000/7560 = 25.4 pc/wrkr-hr
4. Answer: According to the one best method principle, of all the possible
alternative methods that can be used to perform a task, there is one
optimal method that minimizes the time and effort required to
accomplish it. It is also a safe method that produces a high quality
work unit.
5. Answer: A worker-machine system is a work system in which the
worker operates powered equipment.
6. Solution: (a) Tstd = (3.47 + 3.70/10)(1 + 0.14) = 4.378 min
(b) Qstd = 8(60)/4.378 = 109.6 pc (if rounded, 109 pc)
(c) Tn = 3.47 +.37 = 3.84 min
Tc = 3.84/1.20 = 3.2 min
Daily Rp = 7.2(60)/3.2 = 135 pc
