BIRMINGHAM

20th November 2018

Dear Parents,

I am writing to let you know that the King Edward VI Academy Trust is consulting on a new set of admission
arrangements for its selective schools in Birmingham to apply from September 2020. Details of the
proposed arrangements are available on the school website.

The proposals aim to improve accessibility for disadvantaged students and to ensure that there is priority
for local children. This would be achieved by prioritising those who live in newly-created catchment areas
around each school and who achieve a threshold score that will be standardised across the Academy
Trust’s selective schools. The threshold score is expected to be 205 for children eligible for Pupil Premium
funding and 220 for others. 25% of places would be set aside for disadvantaged children.

Admissions is a complex and often emotive area. There are a limited number of places available and, in
recent years, all of the King Edward VI selective schools have always been heavily oversubscribed. I
appreciate, therefore, that while many families would benefit from the proposed arrangements, there are
others that would be less likely to get a place at their first choice of school.

The Trust believes that the new proposals would, if implemented, enhance its mission of providing high-
quality education, in a local school, for the children of Birmingham, regardless of background.

You can comment on the proposals by visiting www.birmingham.gov.uk. The Academy Trust looks forward
to hearing all views expressed to Birmingham City Council during the consultation process which ends on 7
January 2019.

Yours sincerely,

A Whittall
Headmistress
