Living in Perth, Western Australia
Western Australia’s capital city of Perth is considered among the most beautiful cities in Australia.
The Mediterranean climate of hot summers and mild winters means that Perth also enjoys
more hours of sunshine than any other capital city in the nation.
Where is Perth?
Perth is located on the West Australian Coast which means that it is in the same timezone as many Asian cities and also the closest
Australian Capital city to Africa and Europe. This makes it easier to stay in touch with friends and family. Perth also has excellent public
transportation, health services and plenty of options for accommodation.

The role which the chartered/professional engineer needs to
undertake in the process of risk management, the legal aspects of
the contract, the engineering design process and how this should
be controlled, are also examined.
Furthermore, consideration is given to the requirement that
chartered/professional engineers act ethically at all times, are
accountable for their actions, are required to consider the social
implications of their actions, and practice continuous professional
development to ensure that they remain abreast of best practice at
all times.
The unit material also addresses the key areas that need to be
considered in conducting research, including the evaluation of the
research proposal, requirements, literature surveys, model
development, analyses, assessment, and the required
methodologies to clearly communicate the research outcomes.

Master of Engineering (Industrial Automation)
The Program
Duration: 24 weeks
Overview
In this unit the student has to draw upon the knowledge and skill base developed in the preceding units, and take a significant step forward in
applying technical and communication skills to design, evaluate, implement, analyze, and theorize about developments that contribute to
professional practice or scholarship and to make a novel contribution to the field of interest. It does require a significant amount of dedicated
and persistent work to complete the thesis to the appropriate level.
As a significant research component of the program, this unit will demonstrate the application of knowledge and skills – with creativity and
initiative to new situations in professional practice and/or for further learning; with high level personal autonomy and accountability; and to
plan and execute a substantial research-based project, capstone experience and/or piece of scholarship.
Students are allowed to choose a project from a given set of projects provided by the program coordinator. All projects will be reviewed by
an academic panel to ensure that the project is at the level of a Masters degree. Students are also permitted to choose their own project;
however, the project will have to be approved by the academic panel to ensure academic integrity. It is important that the topic selected is
aligned with the student’s interest, future career goals, work history or serious interest in contributing to a particular field.
Research methods are not specifically taught within this unit (apart from a brief overview) as this is a capstone unit drawing these skills from
previous units. The role of the supervisor is to guide and facilitate; it is his/her wisdom that is made available to the student to complete the
thesis. The structure of the Masters program is such that there are a number of mini projects integrated into the other independent units. It
is through these mini projects, as well as through the research-based assignments within these units, that research skills are taught and built
upon incrementally.
A typical BE recognized by Engineers Australia would expect a graduate to have studied research methods (either as an independent unit or
integrated into the program) and also have completed a substantive undergraduate thesis. This prior and required learning is drawn upon
and extended throughout this program.
Although it is assumed that all students would have covered research methodologies thoroughly during their Bachelor of Engineering
program (or equivalent); a wide ranging but brief introduction is given on good practice in research techniques over three online sessions of
approximately one hour each. Considerable additional material will be provided for further reading by the student. This will enable the
Project Thesis to proceed with a strong underpinning of the essentials of best practice in research. The student will be expected to read and
review considerably more than in each of the one hour interactive tutorial sessions.
