Prob.1
Prob. 2
A beam with a cross section shown
carries a maximum moment of 240
kNm under positive bending. Using
A36 steel, Determine the following:

An W18x60 steel with material specification of A992 was used to carry

the loads as indicated in the figure shown. Calculate for the following:
a. Linear mass of the given cross section. a. Coefficient of bending under old ASD
b. Radius of gyration along the stronger axis b. Flexural Capacity of the beam under old ASD
c. Radius of gyration along the weaker axis c. Shear Capacity of the beam under old ASD
d. Effective radius of gyration in accordance to old ASD d. Coefficient of bending under LRFD
e. Sectional Modulus of the stronger axis e. Flexural Capacity of the beam under LRFD
f. Sectional Modulus of the weaker axis f. Shear Capacity of the beam under LRFD
g. Effective radius of gyration in accordance to LRFD
h. Plastic Sectional Modulus of the stronger axis Prob. 3
i. Plastic Sectional Modulus of the weaker axis A 3.5m W12x96 with Fy=50ksi is used as a beam column in a braced
j. Plastic Shape Factor frame. It is bent on a single curvature with equal and opposite end
k. Plastic Moment moments and is not subjected to intermediate transverse loads. Using the
l. Compressive Force under old ASD loads as described: Axial Dead load = 778kN, Axial Live Load = 1334 kN,
m. Compressive Force under LRFD Dead Moment along stronger axis = 81 kNm, Live Moment along the
stronger axis = 81 kNm
