Thank you Mr/Madam speaker: a very good morning I bid
to Mr/Mdm speaker, honourable adjudicators, the government team, my fellow team mates and members of the house. We, the opposition team are here today to take a stand against the topic for today’s debate entitled ` Peer pressure is more beneficial than harmful”. I as the leader of the opposition team will hightlight on the effects of peer pressure on an indivudual’s performance . While our second member will draw your attention on how peer pressure influences one’s behaviours, values and health . While , our third opposition member will convince you with her/his suporting facts as she rebuts, rebuts and rebuts. First and foremost, I as the opposition leader would like to reaffirm our stand that peer pressure is more harmful than beneficial based on our redefinition of peer. Peer is defined as somebody who is the equal of somebody else; example in age or social class. Pressure means something that affects thoughts and behaviour in a powerful way, usually in the form of several outside influences working together persuasively . In other words, peer pressure is a constant state of worry and urgency which are powerful and stressful demands on somebody's time, attention, and energy, or a demand of this sort. Before I continue, allow me to relinquish false arguments put forward by the government team. He/she mentioned that __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ ______________________________________________. We the opposition team strongly disagree with this lame arguement put forward by the government team __________________________________________________ __________________________ __________________________________________________ ________________________________.
Members of the House,
In strive to succeed in our life, one is face with all kinds of challenges and one needs every moral support we can get around us and such support would be obtainable from people who are of the same status as us.Thus, to be in “the group” one would work hard and exert pressure on himself so that he is able to conform to the group. Members of the House, when a person gives in to peer pressure he/she has the expectation that he or she is accepted by the group and become one of them provided he/she meets the standard. Thus the drive to work or play or live by the standard set by the peer will cause harmful stress to him or her. For example, a teenage girl would do anything to conform to her peers. Be it in term of dressing ( where trend in fashion changes rapidly) or lifestyles. She needs to spend more money to keep up with the trend but when money become the obstacle for her to be trendy, she then resort to shoplifting, stealing, robbing or even worse, going into prostituition. These, ladies and gentlemen are common cases of juvenile deliquencies. . Members of the House, let us put the situation into practice. A student who belongs to an elite group in school will put all his efforts to ensure he gets good grade for all the examination but when the exam pressure he/she experience is too immense , he might opt with cheating during the examinations which is indeed a serious offence. Thus, peer pressure forces a person to do things which are foolish and damaging to himself.
In another situation, atheletes are also experiencing peer
pressure as they have to perform their best in the world of sport be it in the track , field events or in games. In order to do so, they train extensively and apply tremendous forces on themselves which sometimes is beyond their physical capability. Thus, resulting in exhaustion which leads to some other health problems or even physical injuries. As a result, they will not be able to participate in the competitions. All their efforts are wasted. Members of the House, These situations worsen, when the atheletes opt to take drugs when they want to maintain their stamina. We come across these cases in international competitions and games such as the Olympics. Members of the House, It is undeniable that peer pressure is NO PLEASURE at all. It affects one’s performance, thoughts and behaviours in such a powerful way that lead us to do unsensible things and make bad decisions in life. Indeed, members of the house, you should realize by now that peer pressure is indeed more harmful to us. With this, I rest my case.
