Safety in using Grinding Wheels

3. Requirements
Face shield and Safety Goggles for eye protection must be worn for all operations including fitting,
dressing, grinding etc.

3.1 . Storage and handling of wheels

Wheel s must be handled and stored with care in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Knocking, dropping or sudden impact should be avoided.

Wheels have a limited shelf life and should be stored in cool dry conditions in a position suited to the
shape/size of the wheel.

3.2. Mounting and dressing of wheels

The wheel must comply with the maximum wheel size and spindle speed (rpm) marked on the
machine.

Before fitting, a wheel must be inspected to ensure it is sound.

On fixed grinding machines, the wheel must be run in after fitting and a balance check carried out
before any grinding is attempted.

Ensure rated speed (r.p.m) of the abrasive wheel suits with the r.p.m of the grinding machine.

3.3. Use of grinders

Grinding wheels must be fitted with adequate guards, correctly adjusted. Ensure that the grinder is
switched of before it is switched on. Apply the grinder to the work piece only after the grinder has
reached the operating speed.

Care should be taken to avoid sudden impact or knocking of the wheel, as one of the great hazards
with abrasive wheels is the disintegration of the wheel in service. Never put down the grinder while
the disc is turning.

Care must be taken at all times to ensure that no part of the body comes into contact with the wheel.

Check to make sure that no flammable material is hit by the sparks.

Normal pressure only, must be applied to the wheel. No undue force or pressure must be used. Hold
the grinder with both hands, with stable stance.

The side of a wheel must not be used for grinding unless the wheel is designed for the purpose and
excessive pressure must not be applied.

3.4. Safety in using Grinding Wheels

1. Eye protection and a face shield must be provided & located adjacent to fixed grinding machines.
2. The correct grinder and grinding wheel for the job must be used.

2
3. Soft material for which the wheel is not intended will clog a wheel and cause imbalance, hinders
heat dissipation and may cause the wheel to disintegrate.
4. Do not clamp the portable grinder on a vice, a portable grinder is not bench grinder nor a substitute
for one.
5. In the case of portable tools used for grinding work, all additional requirements of this section must
apply.
