What can I say about such an amazing novel that was written by George Orwell in the 1940s.

It was a nightmarish version of the future, and how the leaders of a country control people’s lives in the
most extreme ways. Hitler’s policy was nothing compared to what’s been done in this novel.

It is the most frightening book I’ve ever read. If you’re asked what is 2+2 you would say 5 if you’re told
to.

For instance, one of its slogans was “freedom is slavery.” It meant that the only one to be free is by
following orders in every possible way, without even thinking.

Another slogan is: “Big brother is watching you.” Which means that you’re being watched at all times,
when you talk, when you sleep, or even when you go to the bathroom.

-Do you like to travel?

Definitely, I believe that travelling is very important for many reasons. Firstly, it gives me the
opportunity to see different and unique parts of the world, secondly, it helps me get to know other
cultures so that I could tolerate other behaviors than mine.

-What do you need to do when preparing for travel?

Well, I need to make sure everything is organized and there would be no surprises. I’d check my
passport, my tickets, the hotel reservations, and decide what places I’d visit. It’s also important to pack
the right clothes to be ready for any weather.

-Is it a good idea to plan the details of your trip before departure?

Yes, totally, I am an organized person, I’d like to pay attention to all details, when I travel, I’d love to
know what I will be doing exactly in my trip. I’d check the places I’d visit, I’d know the duration of my
stay. However, sometimes the spontaneous activities are very fun.

-How popular is international travel in your country?

I think travelling abroad is quite trendy in Egypt, most people are trying to travel overseas to experience
new challenges and adventures. Specially that the weather in Egypt is hot almost all the year, so people
tend to visit places to enjoy better weather.

-What are the most popular places to visit for people in your country?

Well, I think when it comes to places that attract people we have to mention the pyramids, which is in
Giza, it is the amongst the most famous monuments in the whole world, also there is the sphinx which is
close to the pyramids. In addition to that, people might also visit the national Egyptian museum that
contains many monuments.
Part 2 “cue card”

Talk about someone important in your community

part of the community

-What makes this person special?

Well, since I’m interested in science, the person who had a great impact on me and my colleagues is
definitely Ahmed Zewail, the first Egyptian to win Nobel prize in science.

He was a great scientist, he was born and raised in Damanhour, Egypt. However, he received a bachelor
of science and a master of science degrees from Alexandria University before moving to the United
States to pursue his PhD at the university of Pennsylvania.

After completing his PhD, Zewail did postdoctoral research at (CALTECH) the California Institute of
Technology where he won the well-known Nobel prize.

Nobel prize isn’t given to any scientist, they have to have made a great impact to win Nobel prize.

Even though Zewail was recognized in the American community for his efforts, I mean he was even
appointed as an advisor for the US president back then, Obama, he never forgot his home country,
Egypt.

He was recognized as a respected figure in Egypt. To be honest, he deserved the respect, he’s a Nobel
laureate. Not so many people can claim such pride!

So, he established Zewail city of science and technology, to help Egypt’s scientific future, he believed so
much in science and the change it could bring, he put so much effort into it, and I believe it is amongst
the greatest universities in Egypt nowadays. It has produced so much research and I have a firm belief it
will continue to do so.

As everything has to come to an end, he passed away aged 70, after leading a very successful
inspirational life.

After her died, I still believe he still inspires people nowadays, his contributions are so inspiring, nobody
could deny or refute that. I believe he’s given us hope since his birth through all his efforts and
contributions.

Part 3

-Let’s talk about community leadership, how important are leaders to a community of people?

Oh, I think people are always looking forward to the leaders, they inspire them and give them hope. I
believe they’ve a very vital role to play towards them. It is essential for the people development.

-what characteristics are advantages and which are disadvantages for social leaders?
Oh, tough question. Can I think for a moment? Let me think about that/ I’ve really never thought about
it.

I guess that a key personality trait for social leaders would be being charismatic, they must be sociable
as well to be able to deal with the public/audience. It is essential for them to be knowledgeable in order
to be able to tackle the problems well. They should have confidence.

Regarding the disadvantages, it would be if someone shows socially irresponsible behavior, like drinking
or gambling. The community would have a hard time trusting someone who doesn’t set a good example.

-if you could be a leader in your neighborhood, what social issue would you address?

If I was in responsibility, I’d totally try to improve the education in Egypt, because sadly we’re ranked
last in the tertiary education amongst the world, and I believe in education.

I believe it is sports, if people practice sports daily, not just watch it on TV, they will be healthier and
happier. For instance, it’s great to play football as a hobby, it will surely make the youth fitter.

-Talk about a time when you helped a friend.

It was last summer, my friend Ahmad was struggling to prepare for the exam.

He is my friend, if he asks for help at any time, I will totally help him, as simple as that.

He was so stressed, he felt that he was going to fail the subject.

He didn’t study well at all during the semester because he had some issues with his life. His life wasn’t
going well at all. He was in dire need for my help, so I was there for him.

I once experienced almost the same situation and he helped me and he was there for me.

So, we stayed at his home to study together, it was a 3-day intensive study. I believe if he had studied
with the same effort from the beginning of the semester he would’ve got an easy A.

However, after the results were announced we both succeeded, I got an A and he got a B. It was a great
experience for both of us. This experience has strengthened our friendship and we’ve become much
closer than ever since then.

-A government worker / politician

Elbaradei
Unlike all politicians, Elbaradei was loved amongst the youth, to the extent that they gave him cool
names like “bob”, as he was a great source of inspiration.

Mohamed Elbaradei was born and raised in Cairo, Egypt, He’s fluent in English, Arabic, German, and
French!

He won a Nobel prize for peace, for his efforts in suppressing the proliferation of nuclear energy. He
was trying to make sure it would be used for peaceful purposes only.

He earned his bachelor degree in law, and a master degree in international law in Geneva.

He held many distinguished positions outside Egypt, but he chose to come back to Egypt to ignite the
start of 25th January revolution.

Unlike other fake Egyptian politicians, he chose to take part in the demonstrations, he even got shot by
water pumps by the armed forces back then. Until he was placed under house arrest.

He brought hope to Egypt after years of oppression and tyranny, and he could lead the Egyptian
revolution until Mubarak was forced to resign.

Childhood experience

I’d like to take about the time when I and my sister were together in school and she stood up for me in a
fight.

Well, firstly, I and my sister are roughly of the same age, so we went to the same school together, she
was a year older than me, so we were in different classes.

When I was a child, I was a naughty boy, and I used to make many problems and get in trouble so much.

So, that day I picked up a fight against a very fat kid, he was beating me so much and I was really
suffering.

Until my sister came and helped me, she was older than the fat kid and much stronger, so she beat him
up and rescued me.

She was always my savior, I was so happy that day to have someone help me and support me.

It is a very heartwarming experience for me, every time I remember it I feel so nostalgic to be honest.

I really wish I could get back to those days,

One other experience was the time my sister won in a music competition.

So, my sister started learning the piano, and she went to the club to take training lessons for a long time.
One day, a piano competition had been announced at school back then, so she applied.

I was the one who saw the banner and I encouraged her to apply because I know how much magnificent
she is in playing the piano.

So, she applied, and after that she kept training everyday, she even got lower grades that year I
remember,

In the end, she won that competition.

Words

Every now and then

To catch up on each other.

Which was very surprising/stunning = Which stunned me.

We should make a plan and act accordingly.

When I was a kid I was short-tempered.

I really adore books, I am a voracious reader.// I always find books compulsive! (cant stop reading
them)// Her latest books/movies are compulsive reading/viewing.

I always felt that achieving this goal was elusive, that’s why I was delighted when it came true.

The memories of my childhood are mostly elusive(vague), but I remember specific memories though.

The predominant part of job/childhood is/was funny.

My career is so profitable = lucrative.

When I was walking alone, I stumbled upon my friend.

Sometimes my friends are so stingy! ‫ بخالء‬most of them tend to be thrifty! ‫مقتصد‬

I don’t think it’s the best option to make the government the scapegoat in each issue.

I have experienced many adversities/ordeals/hardships

This issue is controversial, but I believe that

Probability = prospect. Possible = prospective.

He had persistence = perseverance.

He grimaced when he heard the bad news, he was so grim.

Both the local communities and the government should work simultaneously on this issue. The problem
will be solved only by collaborative effort from both parties.

Not connected = dispersed; the families are now dispersed because of the internet.

I guess my phone is indispensable, it helps me throughout the day.

Most of my achievements were contingent upon your help!

Leaders should have adequate/sufficient information on most subjects.

Well, that’s an intriguing question!

Such behaviors are notorious in Egypt!

Such attitude would culminate in more tense relationships!

Famous = renowned = well-known.

Foreign investment has been a stimulus to the industry.

I should be cautious or I might hurt her feelings inadvertently.

I was reluctant to go because I was so exhausted.

Sometimes you have to make some concessions.

Beachfront villa- a garden – household appliances – great ventilation - spacious – preferences – far
beyond my reach.

It is disturbing.

I live in a home/flat/apartment – living room = ‫ صالة‬- bedrooms, kitchen.
