Break-out Plan # 9

Date: November 15th, 2018

Break-out Title/Topic: Classical Conditioning Resources Time
Bridge-in:
 Now that Dr. Jackson has explained the basics of classical conditioning, you
will now act as Pavlov’s dogs and experience it for yourselves!
.5min
Pre-Assessment:
 How does a neutral stimulus become a conditioned one?
 How does an unconditioned response become a conditioned one?
 What is an example of this?
3min
Learning Objective:
 Be able to identify what an unconditioned stimulus, unconditioned response,
neutral stimulus, and conditioned response are
 Apply this knowledge to real world examples in the worksheet
.5min
Participatory Activity:
1. Students will need to pair up for this first activity. One will be an
experimenter, and the other the subject
2. The experimenter should expose the subject to several pairings of the neutral
stimulus (bell) and unconditioned stimulus (sour candy) [approximately 5-6 -sour candy
times] (approx. two
3. The experimenter should then vary presentations of the bell so that it bags worth)
sometimes precedes the candy and sometimes does not [this should -at least 4 bells - 10
demonstrate that the subject will salivate or clench their jaw in response to (Christmas min
the bell sound even when it is not followed by the sour candy] [students decorations for
should do this approximately 2-3 times or until conditioned response used in this first
(salivation/clench) is achieved] example) activity
4. After the first activity students will break into groups of three and two -worksheets -15
depending how many are present provided by min
5. For the second activity students will work together on a classical conditioning prof for
worksheet that will then be turned into the professor upon completion -napkins for second
hands activity
Post-Assessment:
 Determined by accuracy of answers in worksheet

.5min
Summary:
 Engage students in a creative learning activity for classical conditioning, in
which they themselves experience it
