SHORT STORIES:

1) The Man and the Goose

Main Points: a man bought a goose -- it laid a golden egg daily -- wanted al the eggs at a time --
cut the goose -- lost the goose.

A man bought a goose. Everyday it laid golden egg. The man was glad to get a golden egg daily.
He sold it everyday in the market. In a short time he became rich. He wanted to be richer
quickly. He grew greedy. He wished to have all the eggs at a time. So he cut open the belly of
the goose. But he found no egg inside. He lost the goose and the golden egg for greed.

Moral: Greed is bad.

2) The Crow and the Pitcher

Main Points: A thirsty crow -- saw a pitcher -- little water -- some stones -- picked one by one --
dropped into the pitcher -- water rose -- drank water.

Once a crow was thirsty. Suddenly he saw a pitcher. He flew to it. But there was a little water at
the bottom of the pitcher. The crow could not get it. He saw some stones nearby. The clever
crow picked up the stones with his break and dropped them one by one inside the pitcher. The
water of the pitcher rose up. The crow drank the water at ease and flew happily.

Moral: Where there is a will there is a way.

3) The fox and the crow

Main points: A crow -- took a piece of meat -- sat on a tree -- a fox saw -- wanted to get -- praised
-- the crow open the mouth -- meat fell -- fox took it.
Once a crow took away a piece of meat. She sat on the branch of a tree. A fox saw her. He made
a plan to get the meat. He came under the tree and said, you are a beautiful bird but you have
no voice to please the people. The crow was foolish. She did not understand the trick. She
opened her mouth to sing. The piece of meat fell down. The fox ran away with it.

Moral: A wise head makes a close mouth.

4) The farmer and his son

Main points; - Old man had three sons -- quarreled -- father called his sons -- gave a bundle of
stick to break -- sons tried -- failed -- father untied the bundle -- asked them to break -- they
broke easily -- father advised to leave easily.

An old man had three sons. They always quarreled with one-another. One day the father called
his sons and gave them a bundle of sticks to break. The sons failed to do so. The father then
untied the bundle and asked to break one by one. The sons broke the sticks easily. The father
then said if you live together united, nobody can harm you. From then the brothers quarreled no
more.

Moral: Unity is strength.

5) The fox and the grapes

Main points: A hungry fox -- searching food -- walked along forest -- saw grapes hanging -- mouth
waters -- jumps -- could not reach -- tried again -- gave up hope -- left the place -- grapes are
sour.

One day a fox was hungry. He was searching for food. He walked along the forest. Suddenly he
saw some ripe grapes hanging over a tree. His mouth began to water. The fox jumped up to get
the grapes. But could not reach them. The grapes were high enough. He tried again and again.
At last he gave up all the hopes of getting the grapes. He left the place by saying the grapes are
sour.

Moral: Grapes are sour.

6) The hare and the tortoise

Main points: Hare met a tortoise -- hare laughed at the slow run -- tortoise invite the hare to race
-- race began -- hare run fast -- got out of sight -- had a sleep -- tortoise ran on -- hare woke and
run fast -- tortoise reached the goal.

Once a hare met a tortoise. The hare laughed at his slow run. The tortoise invited the hare to run
a race. The hare agreed. The race began. The hare ran very fast. He soon gets out of sight. He
planned to take rest and fell asleep. But tortoise ran on. He passed the sleeping hare. The hare
awoke and ran as fast as he could. But it was too late. The tortoise touched the winning line.

Moral: Slow but steady wins the race.

7) The cat and the mice


Main points: Lot of mice in a house -- owner bought a cat -- mice held a meeting -- one said to tie
a bell in cat’s neck -- they will hear the bell and hide -- all linked the idea -- old mouse said, who
will bell the cat?
There lived a lot of mice in a house. The owner of the house made a plan to kill them. He bought
a cat in the house. The mice could not move freely. They held a meeting; one of the mice said let
us tie a bell round the cat’s neck. We will hear him come. And we will hide ourselves in holes. All
the mice liked the plan. But an old mouse stood up and said who will bell the cat? At this all
remain silent.

Moral: It is easy to say but hard to do.

8) The boys and the frog

Main points; - Boys playing near pond -- frogs in water -- started throwing stones to the frog -- hit
the frog -- killed -- mother frog ask why killing -- boys replied playing. -- Play is death to the frog.

Some boys were playing near a pond. They saw some frogs in water. They began to throw stones
at the frogs. Some frogs died. Then the mother frog put its head out of the water and said boys
why are you killing us? The boys replied we are playing only. At this the mother frog said what is
play to you is death to us.

Moral: What is play to one is death to others.

9) The cowboy and the wolf

Main points; - Cowboy took cows near forest -- trying a fun -- cried wolf -- men came to help -- no
wolf -- left angrily -- another day wolf came -- boy cried -- nobody came -- wolf killed the boy.

A cowboy took his cows in the field near a forest. He wanted to make a fun. He cried, wolf; wolf;
help. Some farmers were working in the field. They came running to help the boy. But there was
no wolf. They saw the boy laughing. The men became angry and left the place. But one day the
wolf really came. Wolf; help; wolf; cried the boy. He shouted louder. Nobody came to help him.
The men took it as a fun and the wolf killed the boy.

Moral: Nobody believes a lier.

10) The hidden treasure

Main points: Old farmer had two sons -- lazy -- father unhappy -- made a plan -- -called his sons --
told them of hidden treasure in the field -- sons dug the field -- no treasure -- planted corn -- got
good grain -- learnt the meaning of hidden treasure.

An old farmer had two idle sons. They were very lazy. So the father was unhappy. He hit upon a
plan. He called his sons and said, my sons, I have kept a hidden treasure in the field. Dig the field
and you will find it. The sons went to the field. They dug up the entire field. They work hard. But
they found no treasure. Lastly they planted the field with corn. In time golden grain came out of
the field. They earned enough money. They became happy. They learnt the meaning of hidden
treasure.

Moral: Hard work brings good fortune.
