Reading Strategy for First Graders

7 Reading Strategies:

Module 1: “Eagle Eyes” (Look at the pictures) (8 min)

Module 2: “Lips the Fish” (Make the first phoneme sound) (6 min)

Module 3: “Stretchy Snake” (Stretch out the word and sound out each letter) (7 min)

Module 4: “Flippy Dolphin” (Change the vowel sounds from a short to a long vowel) (10
min)

Module 5: “Chunky Monkey” (Break words into chunks) (12 min)

Module 6: “Skippy Frog” (Use context clues) (9 min)

Module 7: “Tryin’ Lion” (Reread the sentences) (8 min)

Learning Objectives

Given an example or reading selection, first-grade students will be able to apply one to two
reading strategies while reading with 100% accuracy. This applies to all of the learning
modules. (Applying)

Learner Prerequisite

Students should be able to identify the alphabet letters and sounds.

Target Audience

Learners are first-grade students, who are beginner readers.

MODULE 1: EAGLE EYES

Activate Prior Knowledge  Environmental Print (McDonald’s, Walmart, stop
sign, Gold Fish Crackers)
 Sorting Beginning Letter Sounds
Modeling Reading Strategy “Eagle Eyes” Video
Practice  Reading two sentences with pictures
 Sorting color words
 Fill-in-the-blank with one word (2 slides)
 Fill-in-the-blank with two words
Review 1. Look at the first letter and make the sound.
2. Look at the picture to help you.
3. Reread the sentence using the picture clues.

MODULE 3: STRETCHY SNAKE

 Use a magnifying glass to read words.

Review 1. Look at the word
2. Slowly stretch each sound
3. Blend the sounds together to form the word

MODULE 4: FLIPPY DOLPHIN

Activate Prior Knowledge Review long vowels.

“When Two Vowels Go Walking”
Practice  Read words with vcv pattern
 Sort short and long vowels
 Fill-in-the-blank with short and long vowel words
 Read two vowels
 Fill-in-the-blank with words with two vowels
Review 1. When two vowels are together, the first one does the
talking and makes the long vowel sounds. (ea, ai, oa,
ue, ee, ie)
2. The silent e at the end makes the other vowel say its
name. (e_e, a_e, i_e, u_e, o_e)
3. “Flippy Dolphin”- Change the vowel sound if the
word does not make sense.
