Break-out Title/Topic: Sensation and Perception – Taste and Smell Resources Time
Bridge-in:
 In this chapter, we will be covering Sensation and Perception and the role it
plays in our everyday lives.
 More specifically, we will be talking about smell and taste and how those
sense work together to give food their flavor.

Pre-Assessment:
 Who has read Chapter 4: Sensation and Perception, at least until the portion
about smell/taste?
 What influence do you think your sense of smell has on how you taste
different foods?
 Have you ever tried eating something while sick and not tasted anything? 1.5
Learning Objective:
 Learn about the different senses that contribute to sensation.
 See first hand how each sense is connected to another and how they all work
together and influence each other.
 Get example application questions that can be utilized for later studying.

Participatory Activity:
1. The mentees will split off into partners and be given a worksheet provided by
Dr. Jackson
2. They would be provided with one piece of candy each, and one mentee will be
instructed to close their eyes.
3. The other mentee will give the candy to their partner who has their eyes
closed and nose plugged; they have to guess which flavor they received - Candy
4. This activity will serve as an introduction to the in-class assignment Dr. - Worksheet

5. In their partners or in a combined group, they will complete the in-class other

 Who now knows how smell influences taste?
 Did the activity/worksheet help you a bit with your understanding of chapter

Summary:
 Our senses are constantly working together in a variety of ways to help us
perceive the world around us.
 As you’ve seen, smell and taste are directly correlated so if you need to eat
something gross, plug your nose. 0.5
