III. Prepare the Simulation Endpoint to Launch Simulations
The simulation endpoint is the server, virtual machine, or workstation in which the simulation(s) will be launching
from. In the following section, we will discuss how to prepare your simulation endpoint to allow simulations to
execute.

NOTE: If your instance of Goliath Logon Simulator is integrated with Goliath Performance Monitor, for POC
purposes the simulation endpoint can be the same as the Goliath Performance Monitor Server, but for production
we do recommend that the instances stay separate.

A. Disable UAC at the Kernel/System Level

For the simulations to launch, the UAC must be disabled at the system level (not through Control
Panel). To accomplish this, Goliath includes a registry file to update the system. This file must be
run by a user with Admin privileges and requires a machine reboot.

1. On the Goliath Server, open Windows File Explorer and navigate to C:\Program Files
(x86)\MonitorIT\Tools
2. Locate the Disable_UAC.reg file and copy it over to the simulation endpoint.
3. Double click to run the file
4. A warning will appear for changing the registry, click ‘Yes’ to continue

5. A confirmation window will appear, click ‘Ok’

6. Reboot the simulation endpoint

B. Windows Service Account for the Endpoint

Since the Logon Simulator is creating real Citrix sessions, you will need a local or domain service
account that is logged into the endpoint always, either logged in or disconnected. Please create
this service account and log in with it before continuing.

1. Open Windows Control Panel

2. In the top right hand corner, change the ‘View By’ settings to be ‘Small Icons’
3. Select ‘Programs and Features’
4. Sort by Name and confirm whether Citrix Receiver is installed
a. If it is not installed, you can download & install it from the following website:
i. http://www.citrix.com/go/receiver.html
b. If it is installed, please continue on

E. Move LogonSimulator.exe to the Simulation Endpoint.

This file can be found in <Goliath Logon Simulator Install Directory>/bin and needs to be running
under the service account defined in section 4B above on the simulation endpoint. This file will
also need to be placed it in the startup folder so it runs automatically when the user logged into
the machine.

1. Go to the install directory of the Logon Simulator Server and then navigate to the Bin
folder and find LogonSimulator.exe.
a. The default location for the 64-bit version is:
C:\Program Files (x86)\MonitorIT\Bin
2. Copy LogonSimulator.exe and move it to the Simulation Endpoint desktop
3. Open the Startup folder
a. This can be done by clicking the start menu and typing shell:startup and hitting
enter
4. Copy the LogonSimulator.exe file from the desktop into the Startup folder
5. Run the file. This file will run in the background, therefore no windows will open upon
running the file.

F. Configure Automatic Logins for the Service Account
As mentioned previously, the Logon Simulator requires a user account to be signed into the
simulation endpoint always for the simulations to run. Therefore, if the machine is ever
rebooted, we want the service account to automatically log back into the machine so that the
simulations continue.

To facilitate this process in the circumstance of a restart of the simulation endpoint, we suggest
using the Windows Sysinternals Autologin utility.
1. Download the Autologon utility - https://technet.microsoft.com/en-
us/sysinternals/autologon.aspx
2. Extract the zip file
3. Run the Autologon utility
4. Define the service account information mentioned in section 4B
5. Click Enable

G. Lower Internet Security for Trusted Sites

IE Security should be set to the minimum for trusted sites with your Citrix portal added to the
whitelist. The purpose for this step is to ensure the ICA file is opened automatically by Citrix
Receiver and the application or desktop is launched.

1. Open Internet Explorer and open the Internet Options window

2. Under security, go to trusted sites
3. Set the security to the lowest setting
4. Click on the trusted sites button, then add your Citrix portal to this site

H. Deploy a Goliath Agent to the Simulation Endpoint

In order to execute the Logon Simulator simulations, an agent must be installed. This agent also
sends metrics regarding the simulation logon process to the Logon Simulator server.

1. Download the agent to the Windows machine that you would like to monitor using
the link provided – Click Here to Download.
a) If you have a closed network or would like to use your local Goliath server to
obtain the agent install, please see the instructions in Appendix A.
2. Launch the Goliath Intelligent Agent setup installer (InstallAgent.exe) and click ‘Next’
3. Enter the IP Address or FQDN of the Goliath Server. If you are unsure of this
information, please see the instructions in Appendix B on how to obtain it.
4. Enter the Goliath Agent Port used for communication and click ‘Next’. If you are
unsure of the port number, please see the instructions in Appendix C on how to obtain
it.
5. Confirm the agent install directory, this should remain “C:\Program Files\MonitorIT”
unless there is no C drive.
6. Confirm the installation settings then click ‘Next’ to start the installation.
7. After 1-2 minutes the installation will complete, click ‘Finish’.

IV. Prepare the Citrix Environment for Logon Simulations
You will need an agent deployed to your Citrix XenApp ZDC/DC or XenDesktop DDC/DC for the Logon
Simulator Session Handler to cleanly log off each simulation. This ensures subsequent sessions
successfully launch completely, instead of simply reconnecting to existing sessions.

For Citrix versions 7.0 and newer, you will an account that has Citrix Full Admin Rights to complete the
logoff.

1. Open the Goliath Console

2. Navigate to the Configure tab, and select the ‘Inventory’ sub menu
3. Click the ‘New’ button at the bottom of the page. A configuration pane will appear, enter in the
hostname and IP address for the ZDC/DC.
a. If you are also using Goliath Performance Monitor and there is already an agent on the
ZDC/DC, please proceed to step 13.
4. Click ‘Save’
5. Repeat steps 3-4 to add all additional ZDC/DC. Please note, only 1 per environment is necessary.
6. To now deploy an agent to those delivery controllers, click the ‘Manage Agents’ button at the
bottom of the page
7. When the ‘Manage Agent’ screen appears, select the ZDC/DC(s) that you would like to deploy an
agent to
8. Click the ‘Deployment Settings’ button and enter one-time local administrator credentials. These
credentials are only used to copy over and run the install files and are not saved in the database
9. Click the ‘Install/Update Agents’ button at the bottom of the screen to begin the agent
installation.
a. You will see a prompt warning you to enter credentials if this is the 1st agent deployment,
click ok the bypass and begin the agent installation
10. Depending on the number of Agents that are being installed, the process may take a few minutes
to complete.
a. You will see green checkboxes appear as the agent installation succeeds
11. Once all agents have been installed, you will receive a prompt that the installation is complete.
Click the ‘Close’ button at the bottom of the screen to return to the inventory page.
12. Once on the Inventory screen, you can confirm that the agents are connecting into the product by
looking at the ‘stat’ column and identifying a green box. This could process could take about 1-3
minutes, you’ll need to refresh the page as well.
a. Please note, if you do not see any icon in the ‘Stat’ column after 5 minutes, confirm that
the Goliath Server is accepting inbound TCP communication on all firewall levels (Domain,
public, private) and that the server where the agent is installed is allowing outbound TCP
communication for all firewall levels.
13. Once the agent for the ZDC/DC(s) are connected, select the inventory entry and click the ‘Edit’
button at the bottom of the page.

entered the same exact way they are entered into the Citrix Portal.
App & Title Names Enter the information for the Applications and or Desktops that you would like the
Logon Simulator to launch.

This information is entered in the format of: App/Desktop,Window Title

Please Note: Application and Desktop names require an exact match but are not
case sensitive. On the other hand, the window title only needs to be a partial
match. If you’re window titles often change, the Boolean character of ‘+’ is
accepted. To specify more than application or desktop per simulation, use the
semicolon character ‘;’ to delimit each ordered pair. This field has a 250 character
maximum.
Tab/Folder Name Verify the Tab or Folder Name that the Application and or Desktop is in.

For example, if your Citrix Storefront has the “Apps” and “Desktops” tabs at the
bottom or top of the page, you will need to enter which tab the item is under. Also,
folders can be separated by ‘/’ if there are any nested folders; e.g. ‘Apps/Browsers”.
Citrix Account name Enter the Citrix Portal username in the format of DOMAIN\username, this account
name will be used to connect to the ZDC/DC to execute the logoff
Launch Timeout This is the threshold for whether or not the simulation is a success or failure. If any
stage of the simulation process exceeds this threshold the simulation will report
back as failed.
Web Logoff Delay Once the simulation has been deemed a success or failure, the windows will delay
to logoff after the defined number plus 60 seconds. So if you’d like to keep the
session open for 2 minutes, you’d input 60

B. Schedule the Simulations
In the Schedule tab, you can edit the alert notification frequency as well as, schedule how often you
would like the simulations to run. More than one simulation accessing the same Citrix portal address can’t
be run at the same time.

Please Note: It is important to make sure that your scheduled simulations have the appropriate time to
execute and logoff properly. We suggest determining the maximum simulation time and scheduling the
frequency based off that. The maximum simulation time is the amount of time the simulation would take
to execute if all the apps/desktops configure were to fail.

Here is how to calculate the maximum simulation time (in seconds):

180 + ( A ( B + 15) ) + C
Where:
 A = the number of applications/desktops being launch
 B = the launch timeout
 C = the web logoff delay

For example, if you wanted to launch 2 applications, with a launch timeout of 45 seconds and web logoff
delay of 0 here is what the maximum simulation time would be:

180 + ( 2 ( 45 + 15) ) + 0
180 + ( 2 (60) )
180 + (120)
300 seconds which converts to 5 minutes
Therefore, I would not schedule the simulations to run any less then every 6 minutes.

Logon Simulator Installation Guide

19 Copyright © 2016 Goliath Technologies
C. Test the Simulation
Before putting the simulation into production, we suggest running a simulation and watching it take
place. This is to validate that the simulation is configured properly and to also make sure that nothing
interrupts the Logon Simulator.
Common examples are:
 installation prompt for the Citrix receiver the first time the simulated user tries to log in
 prompt to download the ICA file
 Incorrect application name or window title

VI. Simulation Results

Once the simulations have completed, the Logon Simulator Dashboard includes all the results for the most
recent simulations. Please note, to see historical simulation details, you will need to run the Logon Simulator
report.
D. Navigating to the Logon Simulator Dashboard
1. Open the Goliath Console
2. Click the ‘Monitor’ tab
3. Select the ‘Logon Simulator’ sub

E. Analyzing the Simulation Results

 Successful simulations will appear in green font and failed simulations will appear in red font
 You can drill into the simulation details by selecting the button in the ‘Details’ column
 Simulation Details Information:
o SF Resources Page Not Found: This error is indicative of the Logon Simulator being unable to
confirm that it has successfully signed into Storefront successfully. This error can manifest for
2 reasons, first is invalid user credentials and the second is the storefront server is down and
not accepting logins as the simulator was unable to reach the storefront page.
o Resource '______' not found: This error entails that the Logon Simulator was unable to find
the defined application/desktop on the Storefront page. When first deploying the simulator,
please ensure that application/desktop is spelled correctly and matches the content on the
page exactly. If the resource is spelled correctly, we often suggest our customers to do an
‘Inspect Element’ of the resource to ensure there is no hidden space characters that may not
be visible.
o WARNING: Unable to confirm that session launched for Resource= ‘_____' and Title='____':
This error is the result of the Logon Simulator being unable to confirm that the session has
been successfully launched. Once the simulator clicks on the application/desktop, next the
simulation will confirm that the session did indeed launch by using the defined window title
for the application/desktop. If any windows open instead of the application, ie an error
prompt, the window title will be included the lines above this message.
o Try #_ Waiting: This is an informational message, not an error message. With the simulation
configuration process, a ‘Launch Timeout’ value is defined. This value is the threshold that is
used for the stages of the Logon Simulation. If any stage of the simulation process, ie loading
the page, signing in, finding the application, etc, exceeds the threshold the simulation is
deemed as a failure. The ‘Try’ messages simply countdown how long it takes each stage to
execute. If the ‘try’ reaches the value of the launch timeout a failure will occur.

G. Troubleshooting Common Problems

1. The Logon fails and the details log is empty.
This means that the simulation could not start due to an invalid or missing parameter. Please check
and make sure all required fields in the simulation rule are filled in appropriately. Also, please make
sure that User Account Control is turned off on the simulation endpoint. This can be confirmed by
opening a command prompt (with normal privileges) and checking the window name. If it starts with
“Administrator:”, UAC is off.

2. The Logon fails, and the text log shows ‘Unable to Start the Logon Simulator Powershell Command
and Script for App’
This means that at least one of the Logon Simulator Prerequisites are not configured on the
simulation endpoints. Please review the documentation and confirm all prereqs are in place.

3. Logon Simulator can’t open the apps, but it gets to the app page.
It is possible that your apps are nested in the HTML structure in a way that prevents Logon Simulator
from finding them. You can usually resolve this by filling in the App/Folder name field of the
monitoring rule with the name of the container. Also, make sure that there are no extra space
characters in the name that would not appear to the naked eye.
4. The wrong application is showing up.
The Citrix sessions aren’t being disconnected properly. There needs to be an agent on the Citrix farm
with session handling enabled to disconnect the test sessions.
