interesting subject which allows me to give a part of myself back to the community and
the less fortunate which also did helped me in developing many skills and areas I have
yet to discover, therefore I am very thankful for that.

I would also like to thank my parents, friends and also classmates who helped me
through ups and down of this assignment.

2
Introduction

In this assignment, we were initially asked to divided the entire class into 2
groups, each group approximately 30 to 40 people. But, there were many factors involved
that did not allow us to form our group accordingly. After a several consultations with my
helpful lecturer Ms Tay Shir Men, we were given the green light to proceed of forming a
group within our limitations such as transport and accomodation areas. We ended up with
a group of 23 people and have voted for our commander ( Qian Ying ) as soon as we
gathered. She then divided tasks to people with eligible skill sets and convenience. She is
an amazing commander as she have given every single person a position and
responsibility to this assignment.

I was given the position of a procurement manager alongside my good friend Teh
Qing Da. We were first confused and lost of what a procurement manager task should be
but thank to our amazing and helpful group mates, we were told that it is more towards
public relations and mainly to find sponsors and source of income for this group to buy
materials for this assignment. The community service that we have chosen and proposed
is to give a day outing for a group of orphans and to donate groceries as well. Our contact
person in charge has contact several orphanage homes and the final decision is Rumah
Kids in USJ, Subang Jaya.

3
Objectives

The objective of this assignment is to nurture a culture of respect and care towards
all members of the community among the fortunate students and to plant a seed of dream
into the hearts of kids in the orphanage homes. We also hope to give the less fortunate
group of kids a day of their live to be remembered and they as well will give to the
community in the near future.

Aim

To build and implant responsibility to a group of tertiary student and to have an

acknowledgment and vision to the community out of their comfort zone and also to
develop their knowledge on the current community and how to return them a favour.

Preparation

The purpose of this visit to except bring orphans out to something that have never
seen before, it is also to give them a day to remember. Even though there are many
orphanage homes out there, we were quite surprised with the fact that most of the
orphanage we have contacted do not allow university students to visit them due to their
own reasons. Our contact person in charge gave many calls to various orphanage and
finally Rumah Kids agreed to allow us to visit them only because we offered to bring
them out to a outdoor visit.

After the call, we confirmed the date, time and proposed itinerary then everyone
started working. There were many calls and visit has to be made to pull of this
community service. My job was the procurement manager alongside Teh Qing Da, our
task is to find various source of income for our group. There were many challenges faced
before we can even have a direction of what we should do, mainly we have no clue on
how much specifically do we need. We sat down to have various meetings with our
financial controller, commanders and other members just to breakdown on the cost of
how much we should gather after calculating the cost that will be involved. After days of
calculating, our financial controller came out with a estimation of 3000 to 4000 ringgit
range.

In order to make everything smoother and easier, every single member agreed to
donate 100 ringgit to this project and since we have 23 members, it is a 2300 ringgit head
start for us. Special thank you to all my group mates for their donation as 100 ringgit is
not enough. I was in charge to inform Teh Qing Da about how much to gather, I raised
the bar to a target of 1000 ringgit from each of us as I was afraid that our fund raised are
not enough.

6
My source of income for this task are all donations, I started calling close friends
and relatives for donation. It is not easy as not many people is willing to donate a big
amount, it took me almost a week to gather as much as I can and in the end I did not hit
1000 ringgit, I only got 800 ringgit in total.
Besides raising fund, I was given another task as well which is to buy materials and get
plain white tee shirts for the art and craft session. The art and craft session proposed is to
have the orphans paint on the plain white tees so that they can always have the shirt and
remember all of us after we leave. We spent a few day as well looking for materials
suitable to be painted on the tee shirt and also to make sure all our materials used is
within our budget. After that, I contacted a few shirt suppliers to have white tee shirts for
us to print on. I manage to contact a shirt supplier that allows me to have such small
quantity supplied to us and he is nice enough to understand our situation therefore only
charging us 10 ringgit a piece.

After we have prepared all the materials and shirt we needed for that day, we
report to our commander to verify our task and to make sure what we did is on the right
path. We then also sit down and discuss about the itinerary for that day.

Activities

On the 5th of May 2018, it was the day for our community service. We met at
campus around 8am and carpooled to breakfast in Mcdonalds in Taipan, USJ before we
head to the orphanage. We reached Rumah Kids at 9am sharp that is located in USJ and
we met up at the nearest car park spot and we enter Rumah Kids as a group around
9:15am. We were amazed as how disciplined and well behave the children are at their
age, they greeted us one by one and came forward one by one to shake our hands with a
warm welcome. Next, we all took off our shoes and head to their living area. We all sat
down on the floor and took turns introducing ourselves then they did introduce
themselves too. The majority race in this orphanage were indians but we were shocked
that they can speak fluent chinese and english too.

After the introduction session about 9:30am, it was about time to start with our
activities and ice breaking session. The first ice breaking session our commander planned
was the dancing session that was lead by Terence and Tien Yun which they have already
planned two dance and guided the kids to warm up their day with two songs to dance to.
After approximately 10 minutes of dancing, everyone was more hyped up and we
proceed to the game session. We have game controllers and coordinators to think of what
games to play and make sure all the game are safe to play within the compound. We
played 3 games in total , first is having a race with a ping pong ball on the spoon
balanced with their mount, second is partnering up with them and tie their legs together
and do a race, third is musical chair. The winner of every game was given a small gift and
we can really see them enjoying playing it.

After the game session, about 10 am we started with our art and craft session. The
art and craft session that our team has prepared was to let them have their imagination to

8
be drawn out on a tee shirt so they can wear it and remember this day for the rest of their
lives. We prepared various colours of fabric dyes and one plain white tee shirt for each of
them and cover their car porch with used newspaper and begin our art and craft session. It
is nice to see how creative the kids were and drawing things that we can never draw
anymore that reminds us very much of our childhood. After an hour, they were done with
their shirt painting, we hang their clothes under the sun to let it dry and then get them
prepared to proceed to farm in the city.About 11am, while they were changing and
getting ready, their caretaker told us about their story and how Rumah Kids was formed.
At 11:15am, everyone lined up one by one and board the bus. After a head count, we took
a 45 minutes journey to farm in the city.

We arrived around 12pm, got our tickets sorted out with the management of the
place for a good 15 minutes and we proceed into farm in the city for lunch. They
prepared a lunch box for us with drinks and after lunch we got started with our journey. It
took us about 2 hours for the entire tour in farm in the city, we saw many animals and
creatures that we never knew existed. It is an amazing place for children as there were
many interactions involved with the animals and there were many petting areas as well.
We were all very glad that the children learn a lot about animals and how they look like
besides just seeing it from a book. After 2 hours of spending time with them, we hang out
in the waiting area while waiting for our bus, we headed our way home.

After we arrived in Rumah Kids, we carried the groceries that we had bought for
them and have our final goodbye and photo session. They also made us a token of
appreciation to show their appreciation and we have a final chat session and said
goodbye. After we left, we then proceed to a restaurant for our group dinner and final
discussion.

Contributions

The main purpose of this initiative is to contribute not only to the community but
also to our group. My role in this task was to do public relations to raise fund as the entire
assignment fund rely on me. I sacrificed a lot of time to go around calling and looking for
companies that are willing to donate a bit of money but not many people is as generous as
we imagined. Therefore I went around asking for donations and thank god my friends and
family are willing to donate some money and I manage to gather 800 ringgit in just the
span of 2 days.

Besides raising fund, I was also the sole person in charge of gathering materials
for our art and craft sessions. It is almost impossible to find a shirt supplier that is willing
to supply us plain white tee shirt so last minute as this idea was a very last minute thing.
We went around looking for retail stores for plain white tees as well but it was either out
of budget or not the material we wanted. Thankfully I have a friend of a friend is CK
Wong that is generous enough to sell us some as I begged and explain to him our
situation and we are doing it for community service not for retail purposes.

After that, I offered to help out with buying fabric paint and suitable painting
materials on the tee shirt even though it is not within my job scope. I went to Sunway
Pyramid with a few group members of mine to purchase fabric paints, brushes, sponges,
gloves, plastic spoons, ping pong balls and more which took up almost one whole day for
us.

Besides all these, I was also one of the four presenters during our class
presentation and I tried my best to explain our entire journey of this community service
and to share our experience with the entire class.

10
Conclusion

In conclusion, I have learned many things about life in this community service, it
has exceeded the learning outcome initially created. From the preparation phase, I have
learned the importance of bonding with your classmates and not to be shy while having
meetings as every single person's idea is extremely important and could change the entire
direction of the task. Also from this assignment I have learned that there will always be
something about everyone that we do not like but we have to accept it to keep our
friendship and relationship for future.

From this community service of meeting the orphans, I was both ashamed and
embarrassed on how they can be so disciplined and well behaved even without growing
up with a family. I have noticed that they always have the initiative to get things done
right on the spot like cleaning floors, wiping tables without even have to be ordered to do
so. Compared to us fortunate students of Taylor’s University, I have come to realize of
pampered we were this entire time and we have been procrastinating every single simple
task that is given to us since we were born.

Finally, this group assignment has taught us how to bond with each other and
every single individual from different backgrounds and race and to put all of us in the
same picture which makes us a better man.
