.. Dear Year 6 Parents,
.
As our current Unit of Inquiry is reaching its closure, we would like to inform you
about our next unit.

The unit is entitled “Who we are” – a unit focusing in particular on the Personal and
Social Education component of our curriculum, with the concepts of ‘health’ and
‘self concept’ at its core.

In the unit we will be inquiring into

 How children grow
 The physical and emotional changes during puberty
 Changing levels of responsibility

The Students will:

Health
1. Develop an understanding of issues related to a healthy diet
2. Develop an understanding of the importance of physical activity, fitness and
healthy lifestyle
3. Develop an understanding of personal responsibility in regards to health and
personal hygiene
4. Be exposed to the importance of vaccinations and regular check ups
Emotional Puberty
1. Be empowered with skills and tools to cope with emotional and social
changes that take place during puberty
2. Be encouraged to devise strategies to deal with friendship issues, peer
pressure or bullying
3. Learn strategies for developing healthy relationships
4. Develop an awareness of and be able to identify harmful products (such as
tobacco, drugs and alcohol etc)
Physical Puberty
1. Develop an understanding of life cycles and physical changes to the human
body.

This Unit includes important issues for children of this age in order to help them
understand the changes that are or will be happening to their body. We believe
that these issues should be dealt with both honesty and openly whether the
students are at home or in a school setting.
Who We Are Unit Parent Information Optional Session

(attendance is completely voluntary and for parents only)

Wednesday November 3, 6:00-7:00pm

Venue: Room 1211 (Mr Chris’s Room)

If you would like to know more about what is being covered in the unit or would like
to know more about how to share these topics at home, you are invited to our
optional Parent Information Session. We will be viewing a portion of some videos
that the students will watch during this unit and will also have on display, some of
the written materials that will be used during unit.

Should you have any further concerns or require further information as to the
coming unit, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or Ashley Sleeth,
the Year 6 School Counsellor.

Finally, we ask that you return the tear-off slip below to acknowledge receipt of this
notice and to assist us with making arrangements for the evening.
