Break-out Plan # 7

Date: 09-11-18
Break-out Title/Topic: Communication Skills Resources Time
Bridge-in:
- Over the course of the semester, you have been working collectively on the
first part of the group project and are now working on the second part.
- For the next few weeks, effective communication will be essential to getting
the group project done in a timely manner that does not put all the work on
one person.
- That being said, I thought we would spend this break-out looking at the
elements of good communication in order to make sure that the group
project will go smoothly from this point forward. None .5
Pre-Assessment:
- What does it mean to be a good communicator?
- What are some skills that good communicators possess?
- Why are good communication skills important in a university environment?
None 1.5
Learning Objective:
- You will be able to identify the skills necessary to be good communicators.
- You will feel more comfortable communicating with your fellow group
members.
None .5
Participatory Activity:
- I will give each member of the group one half of a dynamic duo (ex. PB and
J). I will give you all one minute to come up with a description of your
person or thing. Without saying what you are, you will then describe your
item/person to the rest of the group. Once everyone has presented, each
person will guess which member of the group is the other half of their duo.
- With the time remaining, we will address any questions that you may have
about the midterm next week or the group project due in the coming weeks. Dynamic Duo
Cards, Timer 25
Post-Assessment:
- Did you find talking about an object or person without using any names to
be difficult? Why?
- What did you take away from the exercise? Did the exercise reinforce any
ideas you might have had about communicating effectively? None 2
Summary:
- Communication is incredibly important in making sure that work for a group
project is being delegated evenly and that tasks are being done on time.
Being aware of how you communicate with your fellow group members will
help you to work more effectively with them and ultimately get you a better
grade on the project.
- Improving your communication skills will also be invaluable to you in your
search for jobs after you graduate, as being able to deliver your thoughts
clearly and concisely is integral to being successful in any career. None .5
