Rule Management

Rule violations and other misbehaviors in class will be given at the lowest level considered necessary to
change:

In my classroom, when a rule is broken, here is the course of action:

1. Student will be warned and reminded of the rule.
2. Student’s seat will be changed (or similar action, dependent on the nature of the disruption).
3. Student will be asked to step outside and a detention will be given.
4. Student’s parents will be contacted; one-on-one conference with student.
5. If the behavior continues, a referral is written in addition to the previous actions.

Academic Dishonesty: Under no circumstances is plagiarism allowed on any assignment. If it is found that you
have copied another person’s work or otherwise performed dishonestly, the assignment will receive a 0 and
administration will be notified.

ROUTINES AND PROCEDURES

Seating & Classroom Layout

Students will be assigned seats during the first week of class. The classroom is divided up into 4 rows, with
3 tables on each side of the room, and 4 tables in the center of the room. Each table has 1 chair of each
color, and should remain that way since many of our in-class discussions, assignments, and table roles will
be based on the color chair you’re sitting in (don’t worry, the roles will change, so you won’t always be
stuck doing the same thing!).

During class, you will be expected to remain in your assigned seat unless otherwise directed. Because of the
table-layout, we will have plenty of group-based activities and you will have ample time to talk to one
another. While this means we should have a very engaging classroom environment, it also means that time
dedicated to independent work or class lectures are especially important, and any interruptions will be met
with provided course of actions.

Policy and procedure for tardies /absences:

Absences: If you are absent, it is up to you to find out what assignments you have missed. Most assignments
will be posted on Haiku, and the Daily Freewrites will remain on the board for one week. If you have missed
in-class assignments, you can either ask a friend, or come to me to find out what you need to do. For
assignments that are due on Haiku, it is up to you to reach out to me to re-open the assignment.

Tardies: If tardy, you are required to have a late-pass (either from a teacher or the office) and ensure that I
receive it. If tardies become a persistent issue, the necessary course of action as provided by the procedures
listed above will be used.

2
Policies and procedures for turning in assignments:

Most assigns will be due at the beginning of class. If it is a physical assignment (such as a worksheet), I will
ask that you pass your work forward during the Daily Freewrite. If it is an electronical assignment, it will be
due on Haiku by the beginning of class.

If you have any missing or late work (because of an absence or tardy), you must come and speak to me.
Unless otherwise specified, late work will be accepted for up to one week after the assignment is due, with a
10% reduction on your overall grade for each day it is late.

Since we ask that you turn in your assignments on time, I will ensure that assigns are returned in a timely
manner as well. For most classwork / homework, you will receive the assignment during the following
week. For larger assignments such as essays, you will receive your graded work back within 2 weeks.

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES
▪ Daily Agenda / Objectives & Daily Freewrite- When you enter the room, the class agenda and
objectives will always be listed on the board. Likewise, there will be a Daily Freewrite listed. You are
expected to have your journals every day, and to begin the freewrite when the bell rings.
▪ Turn-In Assignments- While doing your daily freewrites, I will ask that you pass forward any
assignments that are due.
▪ Chrombooks- If necessary for the day’s assignments / activities, one person from each table will retrieve
chromebooks for their group.
▪ Moving About- You are not allowed to freely move seats unless otherwise specified. During
independent work, you are free to sharpen pencils, or ask to go to the bathroom. When in the middle
of lectures or discussions, you should not be moving about or asking to go to the bathroom. If,
however, you have questions regarding the topic, or otherwise need help / clarification, you are
always free to ask as such.
▪ Asking for help- You are always free to ask for help. If in the middle of a lecture or discussion, any
questions regarding the topic or for clarification are welcome. During activities I will move about the
room to answer questions, or you may come to my desk to ask for help.

Parent/Guardian Letter

Dear Parent or Guardian,

As your child’s English teacher this year, I wanted to formally introduce myself and tell you a bit more about myself. As a
graduate of California State University Dominguez Hills, I earned my bachelor’s degree in English Education, and went on
to earn my teaching credentials from California State University Fullerton. During this time, I pursued further experience in
education through a number of endeavors, including Supplemental Instructing at CSUDH, AVID Tutoring at Dale Junior
High School, and as a teacher of SAT/ACT preparation courses at C2 Education. Between these experiences and the
numerous schools and teachers I’ve personally observed, I’ve garnered a wide-variety of insights on the teaching practice;
I’ve seen what works in the classroom and what has failed in the classroom; I’ve seen how student’s react to teacher’s who
lack a passion and enthusiasm for their work, and how they react to teachers who genuinely care.

In all cases, it is clear that students learn best when they are actively engaged and when they see that the teacher is engaged
and cares themselves. In my own classroom, this is the absolute foundation of the learning experience. Your child will
experience the standards and content objectives in a way that is meaningful and relatable to them, and which will allow them
to more actively engage with the content. Students will work towards honing their writing skills in a variety of ways: they
will analyze and break down texts, seeing how it compares to the world around them now; they will write essays in which
they develop strong argumentative and persuasive skills; and they will craft creative pieces of fiction. Your child will have
ample opportunity to work alone, and to work in groups with others.

While this is a brief overview of the type of work and atmosphere students will engage with in class, I invite you to join us
during Back to School Night, where we will more thoroughly highlight everything that’s going on in the classroom.

In the meantime, you have any questions and would like to reach me, I am available through either my email address, or the
