Asalamo Alaikom Bukhari. Over the last few weeks I have seen you try some new experiences at preschool as
you continue to learn more ways to be a friend. You were involved in a science experiment with Teacher
Maysoon on the 29th October. You looked like you listened as T Maysoon explained what to do. I saw you using
the scissors carefully as cut up your piece of cabbage, just like Teacher Maysoon had instructed. You put the
pieces into a jar then watched Teacher Maysoon pour boiling water over the cabbage to make a red juice called
‘indicator’. You watched her closely as she dipped the indicator into several solutions and explained if the
litmus went pink it was an acid, and if the litmus went blue it was a base. Sometimes the litmus changed colour
and sometimes it stayed the same colour, which meant it was neutral.

Later on the 29th October you saw Saloomi playing with truck and decided you wanted a turn. You watched him
for a while then came to me and said you wanted a turn with it. I explained that “if you want a turn with a toy
someone else has got, you need to ask can I please have a turn after you”. I could see you thinking for a
moment then you asked Saloomi “ Can I Please have a turn after you”. He replied “yes”. After a few minutes you
came back to me and said “Saloomi not sharing”. We went over to Saloomi and I asked him if he was “ready for
Bukhari to have a turn?” You waited for a moment until I suggested to Saloomi that he could ask you if he could
have a turn after you. Saloomi asked you and you nodded yes, so he handed you the truck.

Today you were tried a painting activity using feathers as a brush. You looked a bit uncertain when you found
the feathers in the paint pots. You watched Samira pull a feather out of pot and draw on the paper with it, then
you copied her. You pulled a feather out of a pot and started drawing patterns on the paper with it. You saw me
watching you and held up the feather to show me. You looked a bit puzzled when I asked you what you were
holding. “Feather” you said. I replied “it is a feather Bukhari. I put them out for you to use as a paint brush
today”. You laughed as you said “Hah” then went back to your art work.

What Learning Occurred?

Bukhari’s learning pathway for this term is developing his friendship skills (which is one of our centre’s learning
priorities. He is watching others to learn ways to participate in a group experience which is expanding his
observation skills. Bukhari’s confidence has increased a lot in the last few months and he is now actively
participating in large group experiences, such as the science experiment. His understanding of social norms is
growing as he learns preschool phrases to express his wants and needs with others, such as his friend Saloomi.
Bukhari’s knowledge of ways he can play with others is growing as he tries new activities. Pai mārika (That’s
great) Bukhari!

How can we Extend this Learning?

We can support Bukhari as he continues to join in new activities by explaining the processes involves in each one
and inviting him to participate.
