THE VALUE OF A SOUL

(Mark 8:35-38)
(Program 2211, air date 10.17.10)

I. INTRODUCTION
A. Our souls, which are made in the image of God, will never
cease to exist.
B. The fact that we are made in the image of God makes us
uniquely distinct from the rest of God’s creation.
C. The Bible refers to our bodies as an earthly house.
i. 2 Corinthians 5:1
D. Oftentimes, we pamper the body and neglect the soul.
E. Jesus taught that it is a bad bargain if we should try to
exchange our souls for the world.
i. Mark 8:35-38
F. We need to recognize the value of our souls.

II. THE FABULOUS TREASURE


A. Your soul is a priceless treasure.
B. There are five things that make our souls valuable:
i. Creativity
a. The creator of something adds to its worth.
b. Our Creator is God.
1. Genesis 2:7
2. Ephesians 2:10
ii. Potentiality
a. God has predestined His children to be
conformed into the image of His Son.
1. Romans 8:29
iii. Durability
a. Our souls will exist for eternity, either in Heaven
or in Hell.
1. Daniel 12:2
iv. Rarity
a. Our souls are absolutely unique and rare.
b. There will never be another you.
v. Desirability
a. What something is worth is determined by what
someone will pay for it.
b. Jesus gave His life upon bloody Calvary for our
souls.
1. 1 Peter 1:18-19
III. A FOOLISH TRANSACTION (Mark 8:36-37)
A. It is a bad, foolish bargain to try to exchange our souls for
this world.
B. Three reasons why this is a bad bargain:
i. Nobody gains the whole world.
ii. The part of the world you gain, you can’t keep.
iii. The world will never satisfy you.

C. To lose your soul would be a tragic loss:
i. It is an irreversible loss.
a. Hebrews 9:27
b. Ezekiel 18:4
ii. It is an immeasurable loss.
iii. It is an irreplaceable loss.
iv. It is an inexcusable loss.
a. You don’t have to lose your soul.

IV. THE FATAL TRAGEDY


A. Many of us are engaged in bargaining away our souls for
pieces of this world, and we’re not even gaining the
pleasures of the world.
B. Surrender your soul to Jesus.
C. “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole
world, and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36)
