Assignment title: 2. Flight Forces, Maneuver Loads and Flight Envelopes

Purpose
Understand the generation and interaction of aircraft lift and drag forces.

Scenario
You are newly appointed as a trainee engineer at a big Aircraft Manufacturing Company where manufacturing of
Aircrafts takes place. You are involved with a team dealing with function, construction and operation of aircraft
fuselage, wings and other major aircraft components; to work with the team flawlessly you need to have sound
knowledge about those things and impact of ISA on Aircrafts.

Your Engineering Supervisor advised you to complete the following tasks to judge your capabilities.

2
Task 2(a)[ Assessment criterion P4]

1. Explain Bernoulli and venture principles and their relationship to the generation of lift.
2. Write the factors that affect lift generation over aircraft.

Task 2 (b) [ Assessment criterion P5]

1. Describe the classification of drag forces.
2. Explain the factors that affect drag forces.
3. Define L/D ratio and describe how the best L/D ratio to be achieved.

Task 2 (c) [ Assessment criterion P6]

1. Describe the four flight forces.

2. Explain how the four flight forces are coupled to achieve straight and level flight.

Task 2 (d) [ Assessment criterion P7]

1.
a) Draw the diagram and solve the problem regarding cruise phase.

b) An aircraft enters a correctly banked turn of radius 1800 m at a velocity of 200 m/s. If the
aircraft has a mass of 80,000 kg. Determine the angle of bank with related diagram.

2. From the V-n diagram (flight manoeuvre envelope) identify the following parameters and explain
their significance.
a) Manoeuvring speed
b) Positive limit load factor

3
Task 2(e) [ Assessment criterion M1]
1. Explain the change of Profile drag and Induced drag with are speed.
2. With the help of Drag vs. Airspeed curve Explain how minimum drag to be achieved.

Task 2(f) [ Assessment criterion M2]

1. Sketch and label the vector force diagram for steady turn phase of an aircraft.
2. Explain the interaction of the forces that is acting to hold the aircraft into the steady turn.
