The Speakers
Mark Cummins - Charities & Education Partner, taylorcocks
Mark is a well known writer and speaker on matters of financial governance. Having acted as a sounding board for
management and trustees of various charities over a number of years he has come across the majority of issues
that charities face and has built up a wealth of knowledge on the subject of charity governance.
Mark promotes a team work ethos at taylorcocks which enables the firm to work in partnership with their charity
clients to achieve their strategic goals and objectives. His approach is based on gaining a deep understanding of the
charities he works with which allows taylorcocks to offer a bespoke service which adds maximum value.
Aside from heading up our team working in the sector, Mark provides charity training and general governance
reviews for many of our charity and education clients.
Jonathan Aikens - Associate Partner-Charities & Education, taylorcocks
Jonathan has a sound understanding of sector needs as a result of his broad ranging experience having worked
closely with a wide array of not for profit organisations, from start-ups to well established entities turning over in
excess of £45m.
Having previously worked for one of the big banks Jonathan has a strong commercial background. This commercial
edge is highly beneficial in a sector where charities are required to operate as viable businesses to secure their
financial future. This is particularly the case in times of economic uncertainty when competition for funding is fierce.
Jonathan has significant experience in writing and presenting on charity finance matters.
Imelda Glackin - CEO, The Martlets
Imelda qualified as an RGN in the Mater Misericordiae Hospital, Dublin in 1984. Once qualified she moved to London
where she worked in Haematology and Oncology in The Royal Free in Hampstead and Kings College Hospital,
London.
Having overstayed her planned stay in London Imelda decided she wanted to move to the sea and Brighton called.
Imelda worked at St Barnabas Hospice in Worthing with their Community Palliative Care team before moving to the
Martlets with the Martlets at Home team.
The Martlets is a centre of excellence in her book and she commends all the people who work in it and the patient
stories and carer experiences continue to echo the great care and empathy they receive there.
Janet Ormerod, Fundraising Advisor and Charity Consultant, Nahira Consultancy
Janet has been highly successful in fundraising for a variety of charities in the South East over the last twenty years.
Now working as a freelance consultant, she helps charities develop better strategies, grow new sources of income
and get more effective at fundraising through improving systems, skills and processes.
She has worked with a wide range of organisations to facilitate strategic planning, from a small opera company to
a large debt service charity.
Janet also provides Partner Consultancy for the Donorfy fundraising CRM database.
Helen Harvie - Principal Solicitor, H3 Solicitors
Helen is a specialist charity solicitor. She acts as adviser to a wide range of charitable trusts, associations, companies,
mutuals and schools on a national and international basis, as well as for many social enterprises and community
interest companies.
She acts as trustee, director and governor of several charities and independent schools.
She regularly presents on charity issues, publishes articles in the third sector press and runs training events.
Key Note Speaker
I was only four years of age when I first got told I would never have
a voice. It was a surreal feeling that was left with me throughout my
whole childhood, a feeling brought about as a consequence of one
asthma attack. I remember walking into the doctors’ surgery, with
my mother, struggling to get my words out, frustrated at everyone,
scared about the future. Then my doctor told me I would never speak
again, and my world came tumbling down. It took a while to come
to terms with, many months, many years. Yet, I made it my quest
to battle my impediment and that is all it was to me; merely an
impediment.
The year 2013, the biggest year of my life. My GCSEs were just around
the corner and still I could not get a word out of my mouth. It was
imperative for me to take part in an English speaking examination to
pass my GCSE, yet I was still stuttering.
Then a miracle occurred, after taking inspiration from the film The
King’s Speech, my then English teacher Mr Burton came up with the
idea, from the film, of trying to listen to some music via headphones
in a bid to counteract my impediment and to my surprise I could
speak again! After years of dedication, motivation and sheer hard
work I could finally get my words out – I was flabbergasted.
All the while through, Channel 4 had been filming a documentary
series called Educating Yorkshire, little did we know it would become
one of the most watched and acclaimed educational documentaries
in England’s history.
As a testament to finding my voice, I was given centre stage at
Thornhill Academy’s leaving assembly, and the small part of the
season finale of Educating Yorkshire. I mounted my headphones on
the arch of my head and began speaking. By the end of it, the whole
room was in tears (and apparently the nation) and the starting of my
career as a motivational speaker and TV presenter had begun.
Since then, six years have passed, I have toured the UK in a bid to
motivate those suffering with their personal battles along with
presenting on televised channels ranging from the BBC, through
to ITV along with SKY and I have set up my own podcast – The
Mushy Asghar Podcast with guests from all walks of life making an
appearance. I aim to continue inspiring each and every individual till
my last breath.
