Academy recently donated
104 stuffed hedgehogs to
the Greer Fire Department
as part of a school fund-
raiser.
Members of the com-
munity purchased stuffed
animals that were donated
to the fire department to
be distributed at various
calls where children are
present.

A I’M JUST
s I trudged out the door each
morning to the gym—I’m sorry, I
mean, to the barn—this past week,
I tried mightily to stay motivated. I’m
certainly not alone—anyone who farms
or cares for livestock knows it doesn’t
matter if you have the flu, a bad back,
or got little sleep: you’ve got to feed,
clean, milk, clean...and as everyone in
the Upstate who experienced our 10” of
snow knows, simply walking through it
is tiring. Pushing a wheelbarrow (actu-
ally dragging it, backwards) laden with
soaked manure was darned impossible. I
managed to clean two of the barn’s five
stalls, muscling the thing one hundred
feet to the pile, before the third attempt
ended up turning the whole barrow over
just outside the barn and the horses,
contentedly munching their hay, were
subjected to my turning the air blue with
frustration.
“I can’t do it,” I texted Paul, like a
defeated mountain climber, trying to
return to base camp. “I need help. I’m
not going to make it.”

celebrate retirements

Lt. Marcus Kelley is retir-
ing after 23 years of ser-
vice in the police depart-
ment, and Edgar Atkins is
retiring after 10 years of
service in the public ser-
vice department.
Greer Mayor Rick Dan-
ner recognized the two
with Certificates of Ap-
preciation last Tuesday
during the regular Dec. 11
council meeting.
“It seems like a little
more than ten years that
you’ve been around with
us,” Driggers said to At-
kins. “You’re part of our
family, and I want you to
be very careful on that mo-
torcycle after retirement.”
Danner commended Lt.
Kelley on his years of ser-
vice as he retires to pursue
full-time ministry.
“Marcus has been an in-
tegral and vital part of our
police department for the
past 23 years and has tru-
ly demonstrated servant
leadership through that
time as he has held nu-
merous positions within
the police department,”
said Danner.
“I am sure his chiefs and
others would tell you there
wasn’t a job he would’ve
turned down,” he said.
“He was always willing to
take a new task or to help

The Town of Lyman is
selling the former Western
Auto property.
Last Tuesday, Town
Council unanimously ap-
proved a resolution autho-
rizing the hire of Spencer
Hines Properties for the
sole purpose of the sale of
the property located at 40
Groce Road, Lyman.
“The commission will be
eight percent,” said Town
Administrator Gregg Mill-
er.
The asking price for the
property is $150,000.

after a six-year hiatus.
These prominent sculp-
tures, simply known as
“The Geese,” to regular
travelers through GSP
were removed during the
airport’s terminal reno-
vation between 2012 and
2017.
“If people are not ask-
ing me about particular
airlines coming to GSP or
suggesting a new nonstop
flight, they’re routinely
asking when the geese
will return,” said Dave
Edwards, GSP’s president
and CEO. “People really
appreciate them, and we
are excited to bring them
back for the enjoyment of
our passengers and the
community.”
The nine steel and stain-
less steel snow geese were
installed in 1996.

Herd Sloan, she was a

Church for 60 years.
Surviving are her hus-
band of 65 years, Bobby
Joe Hawkins of the home;
one son, Richard Hawkins

nia; one daughter, Diane

one brother, Rev. Harold
Sloan (Mildred) of Greer;
one sister, Bernice Smith

Polly Green McElrath,
93, widow of Frank McEl-
rath, passed away Decem-
ber 15, 2018.
A native of Greer, she
was the daughter of the
late Benjamin Ryan Till-
man Green, Sr. and Marga-
rett Miller Green. She was
a homemaker and life-long
member of Greer First
Baptist Church. She was
also a charter member of
the Primrose Garden Club.
Known as “Miss Polly”, she
endeared many friends
with her warm smile and
sense of humor. She was
fortunate to live a long
and happy life and will be
missed by her family and
friends.
Surviving are two daugh-
ters, Susan McElrath Burch
(Walter) of Greer and Dr.
Margaret Juliana McElrath
(Dr. Kenneth Stuart) of
Seattle, Washington; six
grandchildren, Cameron
Burch Oswald (Edward),
Walter McGhee Burch,
Jr. (Hunter), Benjamin
Montgomery Stuart, Ken-
ny Stuart, Jr., Jeff Stuart
and Tim Stuart; and eight
great-grandchildren.
She was also prede-
ceased by one sister, Doris

charged with Driving Un-
der the Influence, Reckless
Driving and Open Contain-
er.
According to an incident
report, on Dec. 10 just af-
ter midnight, an officer re-
sponded to a reckless driv-
er at 705 N. Main Street.
When he arrived, he
made contact with an indi-
vidual who works at Waf-
fle House who stated she
called because a guy in a
red pick-up truck came in-
side and asked if he could
do donuts in their parking
lot. She initially said he
could. She said she went
outside to move her vehi-
cle when the male subject,
later identified as Theron
Barton, said she was pret-
ty and told her he was not
sober. According to her,
Barton got his truck stuck
and then spun out and
went next door to Spinx.
She pointed out the ve-
hicle to the office while
talking with her.
As the officer walked up
to the truck, he saw the
store clerk who pointed at
him in his store.
The officer went inside,
and Barton was back with
the drinks getting out Mill-
er Lite cans. The officer
talked with Barton and
asked him how much he
had to drink tonight.
Barton would not give
him a definitive answer
but told him a lot.
Barton kept placing
his hands in his pockets,
and the officer asked him
multiple times to get his
hands out of his pockets.
Barton would not com-
ply and kept sticking his
hands in his pockets.
The officer then called
for back up.
Barton was unpredict-
able and wanted to drive
home despite him tell-
ing him he had drank too
much and could not drive.
The officer asked him if
he would do the Standard-
ized Field Sobriety Test to
make sure he was able to

out of his pocket.
Barton then placed his
right hand into his pocket.
The other officer drew
his taser and verbally
warned Barton to take his
hands out of his pockets
or he will be taxed.
Barton complied and
pulled out a pocket knife
in his right hand.
The original officer
quickly grabbed the knife;
he then grabbed Barton’s
wrist and had him turn
around to put him in in-
vestigative detention.
He kept pulling his left
arm away and would not
allow the officer to hand-
cuff him.
Once he was handcuffed,
the officer did a search for
weapons and found anoth-
er pocket knife in his left
pocket, where his hand
was while the other officer
initially approached.
Both officers brought
Barton outside to a patrol
vehicle.
The original officer
asked Barton for his name
and date of birth.
Barton refused to tell
him anything.
The officer again asked
Barton if he would per-
form the Standard Field
Sobriety Test for him.
Barton responded with,
“I am not doing that; you
already know I am drunk.”
Another officer came on
the scene and transported
Barton to Greer City Jail
without incident.
Once at the jail, Barton
advised his name and date
of birth.
An inventory of the vehi-
cle revealed a half empty
bottle of Miller Lite in his
cup holder in plain view
and a half empty Crown
Royal bottle on his pas-
senger side seat under a
jacket.

Four die in Greenville County wreck

Four children passed
away following a traffic
collision in Greenville
County earlier this month.
Jamire Halley, 8; Rob-
biana Evans, 6; Arnez
Yaron Jamison, Jr., 4; and
Ar’mani Jamison, 2, all of
Taylors, were all passen-
gers of a vehicle traveling
on Mountain Creek Road
when the vehicle left the
roadway and struck sever-
al trees, according to the
Greenville County Coro-
ner’s Office.
Ar’mani Jamison was
transported from the
scene of the accident to
Greenville Memorial Hos-
pital by EMS, and she
remained in the pediat-
ric intensive care unit at
Greenville Memorial until
her death.

just have to start re-blend-
ing, but our guys have
done great.”

through region play this
week with games against
Riverside and Mauldin.
“This year, we have 14
region games. I’m a fan
of having a larger region
schedule, however, if I
could be a little bit self-

Christmas. It is what it is
and so far the guys are
responding well,” Fowler

The Rebels region looks

than ever, with Dorman ex-

ball team has opened the
2018 season at 0-6, but
head coach Greg Miller
isn’t worried about his
guys yet.
“We graduated nine se-
niors who were very im-
portant to us throughout
their careers. Now, we
have a group that doesn’t
have a lot of varsity expe-
rience, but they do what
we expect of them. It’s re-

lina. Down by nineteen
points as the 3rd quarter
came to an end, the Cru-
saders did have a strong
4th quarter by scoring
24 points and cutting the
deficit to twelve points.
Karen Donehew recorded
a double-double with 17
points and 11 rebounds.
NGU took a quick 5-2
lead early on. An even
quarter saw the game tied
at 5-5 and again at 11-11.
Lees-McRae would score
the final three points in
the quarter to take a 16-13
lead as time expired.
The Bobcats hit a
three-pointer early to in-
crease their lead to six
points, but North Green-
ville fought back with a
6-0 run to tie things up
yet again. However, LMC
closed out the quarter
with a 12-2 run to lead 31-
21 at the half. The Crusad-
ers shot 27.6% from the
field with Donehew lead-
ing in points with five.
Lees-McRae would come
out strong to begin the
second half by scoring the
first nine points to take
a 40-21 lead. Both teams
would score nine points
to close out the quarter
to keep the Bobcat lead at
nineteen points.
The Crusaders put up
quite a fight in the quar-
ter, including a 10-0 run
to close the deficit to ten.
LMC would slightly open
their lead back up, finish-
ing the game up by twelve
points. NGU improved in
the 2nd half with a 40.0
field goal percentage. Kar-
en Donehew and Haylee
Luttrell led the Crusaders
with twelve points each
for the half.

First Presbyterian Church held their annual Christmas Music Celebration on Sun-
day, Dec. 9, at 100 School Street, Greer.
The Candlelight Joy Gift Service has been a tradition at First Presbyterian Church in
Greer for over 70 years.
What once began as a means to collect a special offering for retired Presbyterian
ministers has grown into a music and candle lighting service that tells the sacred
story of Jesus’ birth.
Interspersed among biblical readings were selections from the handbell and chancel
choirs and familiar Christmas hymns.
The Joy Gift began as a special offering before Christmas to raise money for re-
tired Presbyterian ministers at a time when they had no medical or pension benefits
through the denomination.
Today, the offering is administered by the Presbyterian Church Board of Pensions
and is divided equally to support active and retired clergy and church workers and
their families in time of need and to defer basic operating costs at the eight Presbyte-
rian-affiliated racial ethnic schools and colleges throughout the nation.
Around 1944, music and candle lighting began to accompany First Presbyterian’s
celebration of the Joy Gift.
The choir and congregation sang Christmas carols, the Christmas story was read
from the Gospel of Luke, and the legend of the Christ candle was told.

Christian context of ‘The 12 Days of Christmas’
T
he Twelve Days of
Christmas is probably
the most misunder-
stood part of the church
year among Christians
who are not part of
liturgical church tradi-
tions. Contrary to much
popular belief, these are
not the twelve days before
Christmas, but in most
of the Western Church
are the twelve days from
Christmas until the begin-
ning of Epiphany (January
6th; the 12 days count
from December 25th until
January 5th). In some
traditions, the first day of
Christmas begins on the
evening of December 25th
with the following day
considered the First Day
of Christmas (December
26th). In these traditions,
the twelve days begin
December 26 and include
Epiphany on January 6.
The origin and count-
ing of the Twelve Days
is complicated, and is
related to differences in
calendars, church tradi-
tions, and ways to observe
this holy day in various
cultures (see Christmas).
In the Western church,
Epiphany is usually cel-
ebrated as the time the
Wise Men or Magi arrived
to present gifts to the
young Jesus (Matt. 2:1-12).
Traditionally there were
three Magi, probably from
the fact of three gifts,
even though the biblical
narrative never says how
many Magi came. In some
cultures, especially His-
panic and Latin American
culture, January 6th is
observed as Three Kings
Day, or simply the Day of
the Kings (Span: la Fiesta
de Reyes, el Dia de los
Tres Reyes, or el Dia de
los Reyes Magos; Dutch:
Driekoningendag). Even
though December 25th is
celebrated as Christmas
in these cultures, Janu-
ary 6th is often the day
for giving gifts. In some
places it is traditional to
give Christmas gifts for
each of the Twelve Days
of Christmas. Since East-
ern Orthodox traditions
use a different religious
calendar, they celebrate
Christmas on January 7th
and observe Epiphany or
Theophany on January
19th.
By the 16th century,
some European and
Scandinavian cultures
had combined the Twelve
Days of Christmas with
(sometimes pagan)
festivals celebrating the
changing of the year.
These were usually asso-
ciated with driving away
evil spirits for the start of
the new year.
The Twelfth Night is
January 5th, the last day
of the Christmas Season
before Epiphany (Janu-
ary 6th). In some church

lowing day. Twelfth Night
often included feasting
along with the removal of
Christmas decorations.
Many European celebra-
tions of Twelfth Night
included a King’s Cake,
remembering the visit of
the Three Magi, and ale or
wine.
The popular song “The
Twelve Days of Christ-
mas” is usually seen as
simply a nonsense song
for children with secular
origins. However, some
have suggested that it is a
song of Christian instruc-
tion, perhaps dating to
the 16th century religious
wars in England, with
hidden references to the
basic teachings of the
Christian Faith. They con-
tend that it was a mne-
monic device to teach the
catechism to youngsters.
The “true love” mentioned
in the song is not an
earthly suitor, but refers
to God Himself. The “me”
who receives the presents
refers to every baptized
person who is part of
the Christian Faith. Each
of the “days” represents
some aspect of the
Christian Faith that was
important for children to
learn.
However, many have
questioned the historical
accuracy of this origin of
the song The Twelve Days
of Christmas. While some
have tried to debunk
this as an “urban myth”
out of personal agendas,
others have tried to deal
with this account of the
song’s origin in the name
of historical accuracy (see
Snopes on The 12 Days of
Christmas).
However, we need to
acknowledge that the
“evidence” on both sides
is mostly in logical de-
duction and probabilities.
Lack of positive evidence
does not automatically
provide negative evidence.
It is certainly possible, in
fact probable, that this
view of the song is leg-
endary or anecdotal. So,
for the sake of historical
accuracy, we need to ac-
knowledge the likelihood
that the song had secular
origins.
However, on another
level, this should not
prevent us from using
the song in celebration
of Christmas. Many of
the symbols of Christi-
anity were not original-
ly religious, including
even the present date
of Christmas, but were
appropriated from con-
temporary culture by the
Christian Faith as vehicles
of worship and proclama-
tion. Perhaps, when all is
said and done, historical
accuracy is not really the
point. Perhaps more im-
portant is that Christians
can celebrate their rich
heritage, and God’s grace,
through one more avenue
this Christmas. Now,
when they hear what they
once thought was only a
secular “nonsense song,”
they will be reminded in
one more way of the grace
of God working in trans-
forming ways in their
lives and in our world.

the years. I often see ad-
vertisements showing fil-
ters attached to faucets
that “take out all impu-
rities.” My parents had a
water softener, and my
father, professionally in-
volved in weight-bearing
physical activity, experi-
enced demineralization of
his skeleton and a broken
hip. It has been suggested
that the water softener
took minerals, including
calcium, out of the water
that my parents used to
cook and drink.
I drink tap water, but is
a large percentage of the
U.S. population headed
for demineralization and
malnutrition because they
drink only “purified wa-
ter”? -- C.D.
ANSWER: Most water
softeners work by ex-
changing sodium for the
“hard” minerals, especial-
ly magnesium and calci-
um, present in most tap
water, to greater or lesser
extent. If the water in your
area is naturally very hard,
then a significant amount
of sodium may be added,
and calcium and magne-
sium removed.
However, this is very
rarely a problem, and al-
most certainly had noth-
ing to do with why your fa-
ther had a hip fracture. We
get our minerals mostly
from food, not from water.

even more in women than
in men. Diagnosis usually

but a biopsy is sometimes

Finasteride (Propecia) is
a blocker of dihydrotes-
tosterone, and although it
frequently is used in men,
is not approved for use
in women. It should not
be used by women who
could become pregnant.
Women (and men) should
not donate blood while
taking finasteride. How-
ever, it is sometimes used
“off-label,” and one study
showed that although it
did not cause regeneration
of hair, it did slow further
loss. Side effects of weight
gain, loss of libido, de-
pression and fatigue are
listed as possible. I have
no personal experience of
women using this medica-
tion.

first Career Fair
North Greenville Univer-
sity’s Physician Assistant
(PA) Medicine program
recently hosted its first ca-
reer fair at its Tim Brash-
ier campus in Greer last
month.
The event brought em-
ployers to the campus to
meet NGU’s first PA Medi-
cine Class of 2018 that will
graduate this Saturday,
Dec. 8. Employers were
able to meet the students,
discuss employment op-
portunities, arrange in-
terviews or conduct pre-
liminary screening of
candidates.
“The NGU PA program
appreciates the partici-
pation of local medical
facilities in our inaugu-
ral career fair. It provid-
ed our students with the
opportunity to explore
the various career oppor-
tunities in the local area
